Mike Cuellar was a real piece of work
Hitters simply could not figure out that screwball. Cuellar, Palmer, McNally and Dobson winning 20 games in the same season will always be the best starting rotation ever. And the year Mike shared the Cy Young award with Denny McLain was simply awesome. Thanks for the memories Mr. Cuellar.
An Underappreciated Great
Sad to hear about Mike Cuellar… He was a great, great pitcher who seemed to kind of get lost in the shuffle of the great O’s staffs of the day. I remember he’d usually get rocked a bit in the first inning and then settle in and be pretty much absolutely unhittable. A real reminder of some great great times for the Orioles.

The Yankees wont be good forever
One year the yankees will start looking old and with less players hitting FA they cant just buy their core players anymore. It will happen, and their farm system wont be able to replace their core players. They wont be down for long, and down for them may not even be sub – 500, but they wont be dominant. The people saying that the Orioles will never be good enough to make the playoffs are probably the same people that laughed at the idea of Tampa Bay ever being good.

agree with this
but why will there be fewer players hitting FA? as long as there is money, free agency isnt likely to change…
players are getting locked up for their primes more often, i think is the point
maybe?

Teams are getting smarter
about locking them up before they hit arb, like Longoria, Markakis and Mauer

this is it
The most recent example is Justin Upton, the players guarantee themselves to be loaded for life while their career is not a certain thing yet and teams keep them through their best years.
There will still be good or even great players in FA but not as many and probably no franchise cornerstones as teams better understand the concept of WAR.

But a lot of guys
are thinking, “I can take enough money now to keep my grandkids in good colleges, or I can risk getting hurt or not doing so hot sometime in the next 2 or 3 years, and then maybe cash in for enough to give my great-grandkids gold-plated teething rings.”
A lot of guys, after 3 MLB years, are gonna look long and hard at those 6-year, $60-$70 million deals after year 3 or 4 and say yes.

This is too good
From yesterday’s game blog at the Boston Globe (Pete Abe):
“Lester allowed a leadoff double by Roberts as the ball landed between Youkilis and the bag. But Pie popped to center, Markakis lined to center and Tejada fanned swinging. Meanwhile, MASN broadcaster Ben McDonald is sitting in the press box eating peanuts and cheering like crazy for the Orioles. Can’t say I’ve ever seen Jim Rice do that.”

I was thinking the same thing..
But Julio Lugo isn’t that big of a deal, not like Cal Ripken joining the FO.

Ugh, I just hate the guy.
He’s a wifebeater who’s bad at baseball. Do not want.

I had a bad gut reaction
Now I remember why. Yuk. Andy MacPhail lost a few points with me on this signing. Why in the hell would we want a wife-beater in our clubhouse?

Andino?

Lugo might be an upgrade in that case..

Eh, you'd be surprised
I think this is basically a wash given Lugo’s less than sterling defensive abilities at this point. I don’t really get it.

Good morning gang. We've got TV games today and tomorrow
Sun is doing today’s game and YES is running tomorrows. I don’t know how I didn’t see those when I was going over the TV schedules at the beginning of the spring but it’s a nice surprise.

Man, the FO is really hardcore on this "AJ needs to play deeper" thing
I mean they even have his bobble needing to retreat to make the play.
what is the warehouse basing the idea on
he won a gold glove playing at whatever depth he wanted, yet they want him to do it differently? who the hell came up with that idea?
