*If we are getting Lugo for next to nothing, who is paying his salary?
The Red Sox. The Cardinals, like the Orioles, paid Lugo league minimum, which is currently $400,000. He's owed $9 million this season, and he has a $9 million vesting option for 2011 that's unreachable because he hasn't compiled the necessary plate appearances since 2007. Boston is on the hook for all of Lugo's 2010 salary, which should -- at the very least -- make O's fans smile.

Okay, so I'm lost
all of the headlines are basically “The Orioles needed middle infield depth, so they acquired Julio Lugo”. But how is it “adding depth” if Lugo simply replaces Andino? Neither guy is noticeably better than the other (although an argument could be made that ‘dino is younger and therefore better), and it’s no sure thing that ‘dino could pass through waivers. So, is there something I’m missing here?
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
A DL stint for B-Rob?
I’m kinda lost, although I also think it could just be poor writing.
That said, if Andino isn’t good enough to be the backup IF for the Orioles, I kinda doubt he’s good enough for anyone else in the league either. Could probably make it through, I wager.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Lugo's career
OPS+ and OBP: 88 and .336
Andino’s: 47 and .264.
Even if factoring in the huge age difference, Lugo does have some offensive value; Andino has none.

Andino's defense is superior to Lugo's
which makes up the difference.

They're gonna play once a week
Go with the better bat.

I'd have to go with this
just because it isn’t like we’re going to need a late inning defensive replacement for Izzy. Might as well at least have a semi-decent bat on the bench.
Honestly though, how much is the difference in either offense or defense going to mean over the limited span of AB’s/innings he’ll probably get?
Apparently the team is thinking otherwise ...
… at least according to the comments on the Britt link.

Lugo can’t even play middle IF anymore. I mean he can technically play SS and 2B so can just about anyone. We should have just kept Aubrey. He’s basically a younger version of Lugo.
Too sexy for my hurt.
middle inf is easy?

Plus, I meant to say
I mean he can technically play SS and 2B BUT so can just about anyone. As in, anybody technically can play SS and 2B in the sense that they can put on a glove and attempt to field balls in play.

right, gotcha
needless to say, sarcasm doesn’t transfer too well on the internet.
as for your point, you’re absolutely right about lugos decline from a pretty decent SS on a world series winner to, badically, a scrub on what looks like, at best, a 3rd place team.

You just keep hammering on this...
But considering the guy is being brought in as a utility IF, I don’t think you can classify him as a “butcher” or a big minus in the field. Last year his SS UZR was terrible, sure, but in 2008 it was right around 0 and in in ’07 it was in the positive. Does this mean his defensive skills/range are declining? Maybe, but one bad season is a small sample size to call a guy a “butcher” and make a big deal about his defense.
I won’t argue that he’s not an attractive option as a fielder, but they’re bringing him in for lineup flexibility, and he provides that. I see no need to sweat about him playing once a week to give Roberts or Izturis a rest.

2009: -13.4
2008: -1.2
2007: 3.3
2006: -4.1
That’s about 3 years worth of data (the recommended sample size for defensive metrics) since he’s played half of a season in 2006 and 2008. As a whole, the data suggests that he’s terrible.
Now moving on a fan scouting data
Even the fans scouted his defense as horrible in 2008 (near Manny Ramirez level). And in 2009, his defense was indeed butcher like as scouted by fans.
I won’t argue that he’s not an attractive option as a fielder, but they’re bringing him in for lineup flexibility, and he provides that.
I won’t argue he provides more line up flexibility from a purely technical standpoint. He can technically play SS and 2B but so can Ty Wigginton. Do we really want Lugo as our first back up if Izzy or Roberts go down? I really don’t. I would rather keep Andino. Once you factor in defense, their project WAR is about the same. If that’s the case, might as well go with the younger guy.

The obvious solution to all our problems
Is for Lou to play short!

I'd be okay with that,
if Lou could play short.

Dino can't play 2B apparently
He’s a SS only, which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. 2B isn’t harder than SS, and the throw to 1B is shorter. And if Wiggity can play 2B, you’d think Andino could handle the position.
Matt Wieters has a sustainably high BABIP
i still don't like lugo, and i still think this deal sucks.
oh well, i’m no GM. Let’s see how this works out.
How important is this, really?
The success of the O’s will be determined by Adam Jones staying healthy and having a true breakout year. By Markakis showing last season was just a minor deviation. By Reinmold proving last year was not a fluke. By Weiters showing the same degree of progression he did from callup to end of season. By Bergesen, Matuz, and Hernandez showing they are all front line starters.
Brian Roberts is important and Tejada, Millwood, Gonzales and Guthrie will need to contribute if the Orioles are going to be competative. Lugo being on the team in place of Andino is not going to matter much.

I'm not confident about Nicky
based on his ZERO walks so far this spring…
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
i actually take that as a good sign
nicky has an awesome eye at the plate. but he got squeezed a lot last year. he watched a lot of ball3s and 4s go by which were then called strikes. he was steamed at umps, but they gave him no slack.
this year, i think he realizes that if he has a crappy ump who is calling shit out of the zone, he has to be able to hack at some bad pitches. i think that’s what his spring training is about.
in fact, i’d wager that nicky gets 3 or 4 BBs in his first week of the regular season.

Ugh I don't know.
I hope you’re right, but that seems like a pretty big stretch to me. It’s hard to go from swinging at everything (what he’s doing now) to being selective like he was a few years ago.

you know it's funny...
I seem to remember another free swinging right fielder taking his team to a world series back in 02…vlad the impaler anyone? just a thought, obviously nick doesn’t have the power but the comparison was fun to make given vlad’s status as one of my all time faves.

yesterday palmer ripped andino for showboating a play at 2nd and throwing ball away
palmer didn’t pull any punches
it’s possible the word got out that he irked the manager or FO in some way
he's just a thug!
I think that’s why “You don’t even KNOW who Nick Markakis is!” liked him.

He does come across as a bit cocky
especially for a dude that is (was) backing up Cesar Izturis and was traded for Hayden Penn. I still love him though.
Does
He get a bonus for not beating his wife?

I think it's fine
To have somebody with some swag on your team. Did he ever show anybody up or be disrespectful? Not in any games I saw. Who cares?

I just think it's funny...
I don’t usually say much here on Camden Chat although I am always “lurking”.
All the time I hear people bitch about how bad the O’s are and how bad this year’s team is gonna be. Then the second a slight move is made people bitch about acquiring some depth for possibly just cash. There’s no optimism at all amongst O’s fans…
Chances are, this team is not gonna win a World Series, and I personally don’t think they’re one trade from doing so. So just shut the fuck up and wait for the season to start and see how it plays out.You never know what might happen, you just don’t.
Really, dude?
You’re a lurker who only un-lurks to tell people to shut the fuck up? That’s really cool.
I’m not saying that people don’t overreact to stuff. It’s the natural tendency of a team that has been losing so long to take apart every little thing. But there is plenty of optimism about the team and the young players.
I hope you continue to hang around and contribute, but if you’re just going to tell people to shut the fuck up, I’d assume you remain a lurker.
This just in: adorableness on the rise, family copes with child getting schooled. Film at 11. -daveh873
I am optimistic about the team and the young players. But what irritates me is when the team makes a simple trade, and the fans get all sarcastic saying things such as “Yes, now we’re gonna win the World Series” and stupid stuff like that.
I don’t think this team is making the playoffs. The first goal I want to see accomplished is a .500 season. So yes, this trade may not be the answer to the future but if it helps this year, to achieve that goal of a .500 season, I’ll take it.
Then the second a slight move is made people bitch about acquiring some depth for possibly just cash.
Man, can’t a dude evaluate a move in terms of VALUE instead of baseball cliches.
Too sexy for my hurt.
if we were to shut the fuck up
we would be able to bring in insightful commentary from folks such as yourself
we would be *UNABLE
I must have suffered a silent stroke recently.
I don’t care whether or not you make comments, but I feel if you are a member of this site, then you are one of the few loyal fans of the team. Therefore, criticizing is one thing but shelling out constant pessimistic comments is just dumb.
Dude
if you are writing this kind of horseshit you obviously haven’t spent enough time lurking around here. There’s plenty of koolaid drinking going on among all of us. Just because we think a single move is retarded doesn’t mean we don’t think the organization is on the right path.
