wieters is catching again?

i’d hate to see him out of the lineup, but that’s a lot of catching

by twistedlogic on Apr 11, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe trembley's taking into account how the first week went

I’m not sure many of us could handle the white flag lineup right now

by kba26 on Apr 11, 2010 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

i know

DH him or something. the last thing i want to do is overwork him early in the season.

Yeah, this is weird

Outs in baseball are like lives in Mario.

by Andrew_G on Apr 11, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, its definitely a concern

but the more i think about it, the more i think its a good idea. This team needs a win bad. Things like this can spiral out of control, and the season could be over before its really gotten under way. Put the best lineup out there we can for the next few games and right the ship, and then think about giving some guys some rest.

by kba26 on Apr 11, 2010 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Why do we "need a win bad"?

We’re a fourth place team at best. We all know this. The key to this season is that our young talent develops.

For that to happen, what is most important isn’t the wins and losses but the performance of key players. Which means that Wieters needs to be catching Matusz, Bergy, and Hernandez every time out. Millwood is a veteran who won’t be with us next year; his job isn’t to win but to eat innings. Tatum should be catching Millwood every start as far as I’m concerned.

Development doesn't happen in a vacuum

I’m not going to fret over every win or loss, but it doesn’t mean that this is just extended spring training either. If we have a long losing streak to start the season, then we run the risk of both the veterans and young players getting frustrated and mailing it in early. I’m not concerned about the win record, but i am concerned about morale.

by kba26 on Apr 11, 2010 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I guess

I tend to not worry about morale at all among professionals – even if the team is doing badly, they have a ton of incentive to perform well for their own sake.

by James F on Apr 11, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I never quite understood the argument that because they're professionals they arent as affected by the losses

When shit starts going poorly at my job, my performance is affected by it. I don’t see why they would be any different. Sure there are other incentives to perform well, but they arent robots.

by kba26 on Apr 11, 2010 11:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure, but you don't end up seeing your performance drop...

…to a point where you get fired. Jones is playing for his first arb contract or a long term deal. Reimold, Hernandez, Bergy and Pie are playing for the chance to be starters in the majors. Atkins, Tejada, Millwood, Wiggy, Cesar and Lugo are all playing for their next contract – a bad year and they are a minor league deal next year.

I’m not saying winning doesn’t matter. But I don’t know that I believe that winning is the most important thing to them. This is how they put food on the table.

Tatum can catch guthrie

by zknower on Apr 11, 2010 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Sure

I just see Guthrie, who is under our control for two seasons after this one, as a more valuable asset. If we have a choice between Millwood or Guthrie pitching well, I think we should all prefer Guthrie.

by James F on Apr 11, 2010 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions

agreed

i want to see wieters catch matusz and bergy every time. beyond that, i don’t really care who tatum catches. i just want to see him in there mostly because its a day game following a night game. catching is hard on the knees. makes sense to give wieters some time off especially since we’ve 16 games in row.

by twistedlogic on Apr 11, 2010 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

We can handle that better...

…than if Wieters gets hurt or his knees blow out and he can’t catch for the rest of his career.

To me the question isn't six in a row...

…but when do we rest him? Sure, he can sit any other day. Today, in a day game after a night game with Millwood pitching just happens to be, in my opinion, the optimal day to rest him.

…maybe Matt was supposed to be off today and begged to play so that he could help the club get a win this homestand. I’m not going to go crazy second-guessing this.

the good news with gonzo

he’s actually not the worst closer in the majors right now………(excluding houston of course since, you know, they havent been in a position to win a game yet)

by twistedlogic on Apr 11, 2010 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

Gonzo will get straightened out

He’s had era’s under 3 in 5 of the last 6 years. Well, let me change that … i HOPE he gets straightened out!

We have a Roberts problem

He’s getting DLed with his abdominal strain. He’s one of the most expensive pieces we have right now, and is due to hit his decline very soon – and now he’s got injury issues popping up left and right.

I’m probably just overreacting, but someone get me off this ledge?

yea..this isn't good

is it bad that the creed song “six feet from the edge” popped into my head when you said get me off this ledge?

by twistedlogic on Apr 11, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

mostly because it's a Creed song.

I'm not too worked up yet

Everyone hits the DL once in a while. His swing and batting eye still looked good over the last week, he still has his base-stealing ability, and at $40m over 4 years he isn’t that expensive – there are arb players making more.

I'm quite worried about this too

He’s a huge part of this team. We already have a serious lack of talent in the middle infield in the organization as it is and @B isnt the easiest position to fill. We need to get at least another 2 real good years out of BRob and ope his decline isnt huge.
