Hernandez deserved better - MASNsports.com
"Could someone remind Julio Lugo that it's 90 feet from home plate to first base? it looked like he might have become confused and slowed up after nine. Post-game notes - MASNsports.com
"One night after being held to a season-low five hits, tonight the Orioles picked up just four hits in a 3-1 loss to Seattle. AAHHHH

I am to the point that I understand Lugo not running out the groung ball. I can’t be upset about the things I know are going to happen. I cannot accept Trembly not even knowing about it. BOTH of them, Lugo and Trembly, need to be gone by the next home game.

And another thing....

We are on the precipice of looking back at this 2-13 and say " I wish we could play that well again"
We play against “King Felix” tonight, then 12 games against Boston and NY, then 3 against the Twins. I hope we go 3-13, but I don’t see it happening.
Is the a team in more need of 6 easy wins than Boston right now?
And the most frustrating part is it appears as this Oriole team DOESN’T CARE

can we let this settle once and for all....

…. that “team chemistry” DOES make a difference?

Every offseason, when trades are brought up, there is a discussion about how “that guy won’t be good for team chemistry”. And then someone says some bullshit like, “team chemistry is unimportant. show me where it shows up in the win/loss columns.”

Lugo not running to first is a prime example. You think Adam Jones doesn’t see that and ask himself, “well, why am I going to hustle then?” I’m not trying to pin anyting on AJ—it could be almost any of them (even B-Rob and Miggy, who are already known culprits).

IN a losing streak like this, it’s crucial that guys go out and give 100% to turn it around. One day it’s Lugo lolling down to first. The next it’s Atkins and Wiggy. The next, it’s half the team.

And yes, Trembley should have benched him on the spot. That he didn’t is a perfectly good reason to fire Trembley.

I don't think there is any chance we are going to ever settle this once and for all

But I agree, I do think team chemistry does make a difference, it’s just impossible to quantify so a lot of stat guys dismiss it as non-existant.

Although, I think team chemistry takes a back seat to team quality; which this team has even less of.

We all are...

I remember going through a stretch last year when I bet the OVER in every Os game because the starting pitching was dreadful, the bullpen was terrible and we were putting up alot of runs. Now its almost the opposite. The starting pitching has been good, the bullpen hasn’t been terrible (overall… aside from the blown saves), but the offense is the worst ever. If Wiggy doesn’t do something, we don’t score.

I wonder how many of our runs this year have involved Wiggington. 50%?

by Wieters Wieners on Apr 21, 2010 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions

Well...

8 runs scored, 11 RBI, and account for 5 HR which show up in both columns (he scored a run he drove in), and he’s been a part of 14 runs. The team has scored 45.

by Wieters Wieners on Apr 21, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

Guts, and even Hernandez

have been giving us a fair shot at a W pretty consistently, too, if only there was any kind of run support. If you want to shit on a starter, there’s Bergy (who doesn’t deserve it because, well, because he’s a good guy), and, of course Mister Mystery Starter (Berken? Albers?!? HENDO, God help us?!?!?)

by fishoutawata on Apr 21, 2010 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions

So what is the consensus on the board

about what to do with the 5th starter near-term? I’ve heard Berken, Hendo, Arrieta, Berken/Hendo, Hobgood (although Im fairly certain that was a joke), and Tillman.

I would probably go with Hendo over any others since Berken has been looking lights out in the pen and he was constantly shitty as a starter. Not that Hendo was a whole lot better, but it seems like we can get more out of him in that role. Tillman certainly doesnt appear to be ready, and bringing Arrieta up this early seems like a terrible move.

by Wieters Wieners on Apr 21, 2010 8:12 AM EDT reply actions

I’d go Hendo. He’s looked good and he’s not a prospect that they can ruin. Berken may be a fringe prospect, but let’s keep him where he’s been successful.

No reason to rush Arrieta, unless he can hit with RISP.

by BrianS on Apr 21, 2010 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions

There are two possibilities in my mind

1) Bergesen rights himself but quick and comes back up. For whatever reason, I see this as somewhat unlikely.

2) Give the ball to Berken. He’s pitching his ass off, but he’s doing it in the least important role possible. It would behoove the Orioles to see if the lack of leverage is helping him, or simply being in the bullpen is helping him, or if he can be a contributing member of society as a starter now.

Outs in baseball are like lives in Mario.

by Andrew_G on Apr 21, 2010 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm torn

Definitely don’t want to rush Arrieta or Tillman (or any other prospect that’s more of a stretch. I would love to see if Berken can be a good starter again, but I also agree with the argument that you don’t screw with what’s working.

I wouldn’t be opposed to them just having Simon start a few games to give Bergesen a few more starts to try to figure it out or give Tillman/Arrieta time to take a few steps forward. I guess Hendo wouldn’t be the end of the world either, but he’s been pitching pretty well in relief and really sucks as a starter too…

"Don't screw with what's working"

I don’t have a problem torpedoing that argument. Berken has been admittedly very good – as the mop-up guy. As good as he’s been, it’s been in low-leverage situations. He’s accumulated just 0.12 WPA, and 0.088 of that came in his first game replacing Hernandez with the Orioles down 2-0 against Dana Eveland. The risk of losing the mop-up guy who hasn’t actually contributed to any wins yet (despite his strong pitching) is such a low one that it really shouldn’t be the basis for making a decision of who should replace Bergy when his turn comes back around.

Outs in baseball are like lives in Mario.

by Andrew_G on Apr 21, 2010 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Right - that's the point.

He’s pitching well in low-leverage situations so why put him in situations where he’s likely to do much worse? Isn’t that just setting yourself up for failure (you know the kind of failure we saw him have every start last year)?

And to say that he hasn’t actually contributed is pretty laughable. Innings need to be pitched regardless of the game situation. He’s saved a shitload of arms and pitches for guys who pitch in higher leverage situations and kept us in games that if we had any kind of offense could have been competitive because of him.

Jim and Gary

Last night these two brought up some of the exact points that were argued here yesterday concerning Lugo: Why play Lugo, when you have a young Turner on the bench, who could possibly be in the long terms plans of the team as a backup/utility player?

Also, when the camera panned the O’s dugout, everyone just looked dead. No one seemed like they had any life to them, or desire to even be there. I haven’t jumped on the “Fire Trembley” train, but that kind of losing culture and attitude has to reflect on the coach and his staff.

by VB O's Guy on Apr 21, 2010 8:46 AM EDT reply actions

You've seen it time and time again

regardless of the current coaching staff’s credentials, putting a new face in charge during times like these seems to work. This team will never win with Trembley, book it.

by Illformula on Apr 21, 2010 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

What? No it doesn't.

Canning the manager doesn’t “seem to work”. Fuck, Frank Robinson came in and still lost the next billion games (or whatever).

Again: if you want to fire Trembley because the team can’t hit with RISP, then you’re being stupid. If you want to fire Trembley because his lineups, bullpen usage, and strategies aren’t to your liking, then be my guest. Unfortunately I’ve heard far too much of the former and hardly any of the latter in regards to this particular situation. Scapegoating the manager isn’t going to help this team. It’s just going to make a bunch of us feel a little better until Jeff Datz – a man with no managerial experience – comes in and is the exact same kind of manager. And the team will keep losing until the offensive luck changes.

That has nothing to do with Trembley. Fuck, people. This conversation has been whipped so hard, you can’t even recognize the horse’s carcass anymore.

Outs in baseball are like lives in Mario.

by Andrew_G on Apr 21, 2010 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions

I've never been someone

to scream “FIRE HIM”

Obviously the “fire Trembley” crowd can point to a few high profile instances where a change in manager really did have a huge difference (The Rockies and Jim Tracy come to mind) and those in the opposite camp can point to every Orioles manager since Johnson.

I’m starting to think there needs to be a change in authority. The players we have are not this bad. I don’t know everything (anything) that goes on in a major league clubhouse but this one isn’t working. Trembley always talks about discipline and fundamentals but these are things that I’m not seeing out on the field.

It can’t get any worse. Jeff Datz probably comes in and we go 2-13 under him and we’re even more miserable but maybe we do get someone who can make Adam Jones catch the ball with two hands or make Lugo actually run to first. Someone needs to make people pay for fucking up and it just doesn’t look like Trembley gives a damn about his talking points of discipline and fundamentals.

Of course it has something to do with Trembley

If the entire team sucks this bad for THIS long, eventually you have to ask about what their game prep is like, what they’re doing in between games.

It’s not just their batting averages—their fundamentals have been god-awful.

I’ve never been in the “fire Trembley” camp—ever. But if Julio Lugo dogs it down to firs, he should be benched. Players who continue to swing at the first pitch against erratic pitchers in tight games should be benched. And if Trembley doens’t bench them, then you find someone who will.

A manager does a lot more than write out the lineup. He sets the tone. Trembley ahs reacted to this entire fiasco by saying, “well, we’ll get ’em tomorrow” And then they don’t. It’s fine to be patient for a week or two. We’re well past that point.

Yeah, this is what I get concerned about. When you don’t hear anything about extra practice, or mixing it up to focus on different things, or anything like that, you really start to wonder if they’re doing anything at all.

They signed this jerk to fill in for Roberts, but he can’t hit, can’t steal bases and doesn’t show anything “special” in the field. Now he doesn’t run hard to 1B? GONE!!!!! Tar and feather Julio Lugo in the clubhouse.

Or, more seriously, some of them could change their approach. I don’t think it is unreasonable for fans to expect Jones to work at working the count. Or for players to be pulled from the game when they don’t run out grounders.

I’m sure that the O’s are concerned. What is unclear is whether or not they are concerned enough to actually change themselves. If they want to persuade fans that they are concerned enough to change, we’ll see that through them actually changing.

I don’t usually think the manager, unless he’s really brilliant or really awful, makes a big difference.

But I’d like the next guy to be more of a personality shift from Grover to Maz to Perlozzo to Trembley was. I want a manager who will pull guys out of the lineup for stunts like Lugo or get tossed out of a game when sometimes it might not be the right call, but a situation where it fires up the team (or fans at least.)

Anything really

I’m not advocating a Zambrano like beating of water cooler necessarily, but I’d like to see some frustration manifested in some way that’s not just sulking. They obviously don’t look happy, and I do realize they’re concerned about the team’s performance. They just seemed more stunned, which I suppose is understandable considering what we thought they had in terms of offense. Whether they need someone to yell at them, or someone to loosen them up I don’t know. It just seems to me like something is lacking in the clubhouse.

Didn’t the 2004 PHN team that was down to the Yankees 0-3 do shots of jack in the clubhouse before games 4-7?

Not that I endorse anything that PHN stands for, but that seemed to have worked out pretty well.

They are tired. They haven’t has a day off since opening day, and having 3 starters out sure hasn’t helped. Who wouldn’t be listless at the end of a brutal run like that.

Food for thought

The O’s starters ERA without Bergesen is 3.85. They are averaging 6.22 innings per game. None has lasted <5 Innings. In 12 starts they have given up 1 earned run twice, 2 ER three times, 3 ER 5 times, and 4 ER twice.

And the Orioles have two wins.

Could say a lot of things, but why bother. Well, there is one thing that has to be said. Julio Lugo sucks. Major League sucks. Exactly what is the purpose of a guy who can’t field and can’t hit? Even though he wasn’t credited with one, his error on the throw to catch Jack Wilson trying to stretch a single into a double opened the door for the big inning against Bergy.

Man, it’s going to be a long season.

I havent had a chance to read the police report (going to try to),

but this doesnt sound like a case where an athlete is walking just because he’s famous. The interview with the D.A. made it sound like he as declining to press charges begrudgingly, and only do to a lack of physical evidence.

District Attorney’s only have so limited resources available and a trial against Roethlisberger would likely be extraordinarily expensive. I think i’d feel worse if he went ahead against Roethlisberger just because had a celebrity on the hook and 3 other cases went unproperly prosecuted in Georgia because they burned through their budget trying to contain the media frenzy.

by kba26 on Apr 21, 2010 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

the entire incident was poorly handled by the authorities

this pretty well sums it up:

“When asked about a comment similar to ‘this f— b— is drunk’ or ’this b— is drunk off her ass accusing BEN of assaulting her,” Blash said that he did say something like that to the other Milledgeville police officers and indicated that Roethlisberger’s bodyguards may have overheard the comment," the report said.

It added, “Blash indicted (sic) that he was mad because the victim was not being ‘straight up’ with him and that pissed him off.”

Blash resigned Wednesday, Milledgeville Police Chief Woodrow Blue told CNN on Friday. He would not discuss reasons for the resignation.

Blash was photographed posing with Roethlisberger on the night of the alleged rape.

My goodness

The offense is so moribund. Beat up on Trembley all you want, but the players who were supposed to be good just aren’t getting it done. (And by getting it done, I mean even sniffing an average performance.)

Hernandez et al give up three runs and we lose. Two leadoff doubles stranded. Adam Jones looks completely lost. The bottom of the lineup are pretty much automatic outs. Only Wiggy and Wieters are doing much of anything. Okay, it’s only been a little more than two weeks, but it’s really remarkable how bad it’s been.

Anyway. One more game today and then an off day. After this, we reset and start over. Pretend this 2-14 (or 3-13) start didn’t happen. Shrug it off.

The only offense worse than ours may be that of the Giants, whose pitching staff gave up one hit last night but still lost 1-0 to the Padres.

The Orioles don’t believe that he’ll require surgery, which would increase his recovery time. The body will just have to heal on its own.

Pie has only been cleared to run. He’ll eventually begin light exercises. And we’ll continue to wait for his return.

To say Pie is disappointed would be a gross understatement.

..in the “Sexting” case before the Supreme Court today, Chief Justice Roberts asked counsel “what’s the difference between email and a pager?”.

c'mon, context.

I’m sure it was along the lines of “how should the rules applying to a pager be different than those applying to email”, not “what are these two different things”.

didn't seem that way from the convo

Seemed like they were legitimately confused about how texting worked and how it was different from other technologies. Here’s a snipit:

At one point, Justice Anthony Kennedy asked what would happen if a text message was sent to an officer at the same time he was sending one to someone else.

"Does it say: ‘Your call is important to us, and we will get back to you?’" Kennedy asked.

actually, yes.

i went and read the transcript. it’s exactly the kind of thing I stated above. Pretty clearly context, no matter how much people decide they don’t want it to be.

JUSTICE GINSBURG: But my question is, an
19 employee reads this policy and says, oh, my e-mails are
20 going to be subject to being monitored

21 MR. DAMMEIER: Sure.

22 JUSTICE GINSBURG: Wouldn’t that employee
23 expect that the policy would carry over to pagers? When
24 you think of what’s the reason why they want to look at
25 the e-mails, wouldn’t the same reason apply?

1 MR. DAMMEIER: Well, I’m sure the same
2 reasons could apply but the — the city is the one who
3 writes the rules here. The — if they want to make it
4 clear on what it applies to, it certainly should be on
5 them to write them clear so the employee understands it.

6 CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: Maybe — maybe
7 everybody else knows this, but what is the difference
8 between the pager and the e-mail?

9 MR. DAMMEIER: Sure. The e-mail, looking at
10 the computer policy, that goes through the city’s
11 computer, it goes through the city’s server, it goes
12 through all the equipment that — that has — that the
13 city can easily monitor. Here the pagers are a separate
14 device that goes home with you, that travels with you,
15 that you can use on duty, off-duty.

16 CHIEF JUSTICE ROBERTS: You can do that with
17 e-mails.

18 MR. DAMMEIER: Certainly, certainly. But
19 but in this -
in this instance with the pagers it went
20 through no city equipment, it went through Arch Wireless
21 and then was transmitted to another — another person.

to clarify

i’m not saying the SCOTUS isn’t techinically challenged.

but this particular quote has been taken out of context and turned into a media feeding-frenzy. everyone is reprinting some else’s biased conclusions instead of going to the source as i just did.

the source makes it crystal clear that Roberts is asking how different policies apply, not asking “what is this PAGER thing you speak of?”.

And believe me, I hate Roberts as much as anyone. But I hate this kind of lazy sensationalistic journalism that is only designed to get web traffic, not to get at the truth of a matter.

Alright, i'll concede on the Roberts quote

but it sounds like there were still plenty of questions asked that really call into question the Supreme Court’s (Or most other courts, except maybe the Federal Circuit) ability to decide these cases.

by kba26 on Apr 21, 2010 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not convinced.

At least not by this snippet. Roberts seems to not know the difference between the two media, and nowhere does it clarify that it’s just contextual to this discussion, which is why he starts the sentence “Maybe — maybe everybody else knows this…”

Dammeier is obviously talking deeper into the actual network setups of the different media. But that does not prove Roberts knows what the fuck he’s talking about. His question makes it sound as though he’s just clueless.

by Jonny Pops on Apr 21, 2010 3:35 PM EDT up reply actions

go read the transcript

the entire section is on pager policy vs email policy, starting with this:

11 MR. DAMMEIER: Thank you, Mr. Chief Justice,
12 and may it please the Court:
13 I think an underlying fact that we might be
14 skipping over is — is — and both the lower courts
15 recognize this — that the computer policy that the
16 department had didn’t apply to the pagers on its own.
17 It — it only came into play after Lieutenant Duke
18 modified that policy and told people at the — at the
19 meeting that was referred to earlier that the pagers are
20 now going to be applying with — with this policy.
21 It — it -

22 JUSTICE GINSBURG: Why is — why is that so?
23 I mean, it did say associated equipment. And — and if
24 an employee is told, now e-mails aren’t private, so we
25 are warning you, we can monitor them, wouldn’t such an
1 employee expect the same thing to apply to the pager?

Justice Roberts doesn’t ask the difference between “email and a pager”, as has been widely mis-reported (and misquoted by you above). He asks about the difference between “the email and the pager”, directly following Dammeier’s discussion of which rules apply to which technologies:“the city is the one who writes the rules here. The — if they want to make it clear on what it applies to”.

It’s a real stretch to think he was asking what the difference is between the technologies instead of the rules that apply to those technologies.

"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic

by zknower on Apr 21, 2010 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

why is that a stretch?

you’re not giving me a compelling argument at all. Roberts asks:

“Maybe — maybe everybody else knows this, but what is the difference between the pager and the e-mail? "

(and yes I did misquote – by substituting “’s” for “is” and leaving out two instances of the word “the” – geeeeesh).

Why would "everybody know " which municipal rules apply to which medium, as Roberts begins his question with? “Everybody” does not know something like that. Actually that’s the case that needs to be made by counsel. What “everybody” knows is the actual difference between the email and the pager.

You lack as much context here as I do to show that. You’re assuming they’re all on the same page here in the conversation. But clearly they are not since Roberts needs to ask the above question AND qualify his lack of knowledge.

by Jonny Pops on Apr 21, 2010 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

The omission of the two instances of “the” is what’s crucial. Roberts isn’t our grandparents, who say, “the Google”. If he wanted to know the difference between technologies, he would have omitted the "the"s.

The everybody, to me, is the other judges, since they all would have read the briefs leading to the case.

Look JP, it’s irrefutable that this entire section of the discussion up to that point was about the difference in department policies as they apply to different technologies. Irrefutable. I went and read the actual transcript, and provided a link for you above.

If you read the actual transcript and come away with the same conclusions you’re arguing now, then we just have to agree to disagree.

But at minimum, it is irresponsible journalism for everyone to be reporting what they’re reporting—Robert’s actual intention is debatable at best. It’s no slam dunk to represent him as the simpleton that all these media outlets are portraying him as.

"I doubt he could reach [second base]...mostly cuz his fucking arm was in Aybar's nuts." – twistedlogic

by zknower on Apr 21, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

For starters

many of these news outlets have people in the court. People who are following this a lot closer than you or I. So let’s withold judgment on the reporting itself.

Second, John Roberts apparently does use the word “the” before “pager” as shown in this statement from today (which further illustrates his ignorance of the technology as well)

"What happens, just out of curiosity," Chief Justice Roberts asked, "if he is on the pager and sending a message and they are trying to reach him for, you know, a SWAT team crisis? Does the one kind of trump the other, or do they get a busy signal?"

Let’s also not forget Roberts was appointed by a President who used the term “The Google” and “The Internets”.

I’m afraid your evidence is not irrefutable Zach, not even close. You’re giving Roberts the benefit of the doubt for the sake of your argument, that he is understanding the information being presented to him, when all evidence points to the contrary.

by Jonny Pops on Apr 21, 2010 4:26 PM EDT up reply actions

You can disagree all you want with his positions

And if you do thats fine. But you REALLY think the guy is the total moron you are making him out to be?

Not sure if a guy who was the managing editor of the Harvard Law Review is a total idiot, but I’m sure I won’t be able to convince you of this.

by Wieters Wieners on Apr 21, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you read that quote just above?

He doesn’t know that pagers don’t have busy signals.

This does not make him a moron. But it does mean he’s technically inept. And I’m sure he would issue a Mea Culpa to this after today’s transcript.

Also, this has nothing to do with my opinions of his rulings. I just know how complicated the world of law can be and I often wonder how qualified judges can possibly be to rule in matters they know little to nothing about. It can get scary.

by kba26 on Apr 21, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Collapsing makes things a lot easier

Especially in game threads when a lot of pictures tend to be posted, having all those images significantly slows down the thread and requires a lot of additional scrolling. If you collapse them once you see them (and most are only worth seeing once), it streamlines the whole process.

No subject line = no collapsing
