The Orioles today announced that they have claimed LHP PEDRO VIOLA off of waivers from the Cincinnati Reds and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
Viola, 26, appeared in nine games for Cincinnati in 2009, posting a 5.14 ERA (7.0IP, 4ER) after working in 54 games for Triple-A Louisville, where he went 2-2 with eight saves and a 5.47 ERA (49.1IP, 30ER). Viola appeared in one game for Louisville this year (1.0IP, 1K).
In order to make room for Viola on the 40-man roster, the Orioles have transferred outfielder FELIX PIE from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list (torn latissimus dorsi muscle).

That's FIVE lefty relievers on our 40-man roster

Looks like he had some decent stats up through AA
maybe the scouts saw something in him they liked and think they can get it straightened out. I’m trying not to think of this and Pie as corresponding moves (even though they technically are). Hopefully the team decided they can best fill all the necessary roles with the players already on the 40 man roster, and saw an opportunity to use Pie’s extended DL stay to take a look at an interesting pitcher who could help us down the line.
Not the front office announcement I want
I saw the first sentence “The Orioles today announced…” and my heart soared because I just knew the next words would be “that manager Dave Tremblay and hitting coach Terry Crowley were placed on a barge in the Puget Sound and shoved northward in the general direction of where Sarah Palin can see Russia from her outhouse…”
This guy is crying out for a mentor
