One move to better the Orioles
Double the budget for scouting amateur talent and signing players through the draft. Maybe even tripple it while I can.

Our draft spending isn't bad
I’d rather see that money spent on Cuban or other foreign players.

How do we know it needs to be doubled?

I don't know the scouting budget
And I don’t think that kind of info is publicly available.
Our draft spending in recent years:
2005: $4.2 million
2006: $5.4 million
2007: $8.0 million ($6m to Wieters)
2008: $6.9 million
2009: $8.5 million
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
I agree it hasn't been bad
It just couldn’t hurt to over-stock our system with young talent, but you made a good point with the international talent. I would increase the international budget and not the draft budget with my one move now.

Sure he has
But if I could make one move to chane the team I dont think that’s what i’m going with. I also don’t see a reason to cast Berg into the pen at this point.
"You accept mediocrity and you get mediocrity." - Adam Jones, Son!
I'd like to see us spend more in the draft
But I don’t know how much room there is to double it.
It is very hard to break $10 million in draft spending without most of it going to one player. And while I am all for it, the truth is that there aren’t a lot of Garin Cecchini types out there who could slip into later rounds and still command multiple millions.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
was wondering something similiar along those lines...
was debating a co-worker about how well the MFYs do in the draft. He seems to think that despite the large FA signings, they really build the team from within. But, other than the core four from the mid-90s, there hasn’t been much talent that they’ve drafted.
Robinson Cano, to me, seems to be the only really solid position player to come out of their farm system in 15 years, yet he was signed as an amateur free-agent. I’m wondering if anyone knows what kind of amateur FA deal he signed? Was it something to give them credit for cause they did some nice scouting on the cheap, or were the MFYs just able to throw the most money at a highly touted international player?
Well, they drafted Brett Gardner, Joba Chamberlin, Phil Hughes
Mark Melancon and David Robertson who are all part of the team now. But of course they have been great at turning their picks into major league players even if they do that more by trades than development; C.J. Henry became Bobby Abreu, Austin Jackson became Curtis Granderson, etc.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
This gets to the heart of whether you want a long term or short term fix
I’d say continue with international development (assuming MLB will maintain the status quo) and better minor league development is higher priority than buying a big bat or a new manager. Problem is that is longer term stuff and fans are sick of the O’s losing (me included).
On the other hand, what choice so the O’s have? They aren’t going to attract established talent until they establish themselves via drafting and development.

It turned out real poorly and no amount of crying is going to change that. Smoak and Matsuz were projected to go at a simmilar time (Smoak is doing quite well for himself as well). At the time it seemed like more people wanted Smoak though.
Matzek would have cost at least $1M more so you’ve gotta give up Coffee as well since we probably wouldnt have gone as far over slot in later rounds. Also I believe Matzek hasn’t even thrown a professional pick so dont get too far ahead ourselves in crowning him as better than Hobgood.

Tall, lanky kid...
…reported at 6’2 to 6’3 but only 180. Great arm and instincts at short, but only average range; some people see his athleticism as reason to believe he’ll stick at short while others think as he adds weight he’ll end up at third. Kills fastballs and has plus power, but a bit of a long swing and some people think he hacks away at the plate.
He’s achieved a good bit of separation from the other top prep bats like Nick Castellanos, Austen Wilson and Yordy Cabrera and is the top prep bat in the draft at this point. He should be good wherever he plays, but obviously, if he can stick at short, he’s a premier talent.
I’ll be doing a story on Machado and Colon in a week or two.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
I was literally JUST about to ask what people thought of Machado
I know ESPN has him ranked 2nd overall and calls him “A-Rod Lite”, but I wanted someother opinions. I’d love to be able to fill a need with the best available player, but is he worth passing up on a Taillon (who has a great arm) or Whitson (who has great command)? I’m not much of a Pomeranz guy at this point, so I didn’t include him, but I could be persuaded.
Also, do we think Machado will make it to us at 3?
"You accept mediocrity and you get mediocrity." - Adam Jones, Son!
I think the pirates will go Pomeranz
It fits. I dont see us drafting Taillon, I dont think it fits AM’s strategy to draft a top HS pitcher to big money. I think he values quanity and quality in young pitchers.

If the Pirates don't go Pomeranz or Harper...
…then I’m going to question the Huntington regime a lot. I don’t see how another move makes sense for them. I guess I could see them taking Colon as a signability pick like Sanchez. But with their needs, taking a high school pitcher with Pomeranz on the board doesn’t make much sense.

I agree
I’d rather have Pomeranz or Ranaudo than Taillon, our strategy of snapping up polished college guys who will waltz through the minors is solid strategy. Leave the HS guys for the lower picks.
Matt Wieters has a sustainably high BABIP
I think Machado makes it to us...
…unless the Nats pick him over Harper. I think A-Rod lite is stupid though; hardly anyone in baseball history has had A-Rods combination of polish and tools.
I like Pomeranz more than Whitson personally; maybe even more than Taillon (high school right handers bust like crazy).

Lite
I think A-Rod lite is stupid though; hardly anyone in baseball history has had A-Rods combination of polish and tools.
That’s probably why they use the qualifier “lite”. I doubt they mean he has less calories per serving than A-Rod, although there is only one way to find out.

Why not "Honus Wagner-lite" or "Jackie Robinson-lite"?
It sounds preposterous because they are legends of the game. And just because A-Rod plays now, we don’t generally realize that we’re comparing this 18 year old kid to one of the greatest players in the history of the game. And I think it is silly.

off-topic, but I would LOVE to see renewed studies
Of race in baseball. Bill James said back in 1990 that black players seem to lose their speed later in their careers than white players. Of course, when he did similarity scores, he wrote about how black second basemen were similar to other black second basemen and white outfielders were similar to other white outfielders.
Now that more hispanics are in the game, and less African Americans, I think there is knowledge to be knowed.

I used a little bit of money and was very active with it. Not quite day trader levels, but still active. Once I made some money like that I pulled out of all these risky stocks and settled in with more stable, dividend yielding companies. Now I’m holding for the long term and don’t really pay a whole lot of attention to the daily swings.
This series is taking years off of my life.

I usually stick with some dividend stocks
And some small caps to throw in some potential to it. Just let it run and if things go down i just try and buy more.

Where are you buying the house at.
Tomorrow will be a bitch for you. We closed on our house last October… I remember sitting there signing the paperwork thinking “YES… Ill own this in 2038 after paying twice as much as I bought it for”!

Yeah it’s been a gigantic pain in the ass so far. I am starting to hate our mortgage guy.

It’ll actually save about 5 minutes on the drive to O’s games. Much closer to 395.

i was just on google maps looking at that haha

what's your preferred 395 route to Bmore?
I’m right off of 395 – the Glebe Rd exit. Still trying to figure out the best (least shitty) way to get up to Baltimore.
"Believe it or not, I read the paper." - Nick Markakis
I always take 395 to Pennsylvania Avenue to the BW parkway, but during the week the PA Ave exit can be pretty bad. A lot of people take the exit before that and go one exit on 295 S (I think it’s 295 there??) and then get off at the first exit and get back on going N. Sometimes I do that if PA ave looks really bad.

Yeah, I usually do the Penn Ave to BW Pkwy thing
I was hoping there was some magical wormhole you knew about that would bypass all that shit.
"Believe it or not, I read the paper." - Nick Markakis
I have a friend
who relies on google traffic to decide between the beltway to 95 and 395 to the parkway every single time. He says it’s never let him down.
Next time the PA Ave exit is bad try going south the exit before and making the loop. It can save some solid time if penn is really bad.

apparently
I have never looked at it but he swears by it.

google traffic is awesome
and a little scary. it’s very big brother is watching, but damn if it’s not incredibly accurate.
if you have the google maps app on your iphone, it works there too. i use it all the time.

google maps
It’s available on android phones as well. I don’t use it a lot because I found sigalert.com much better but that site doesn’t cover dc/bal. But in general, google maps is OK. It hasn’t been 100% reliable but it usually does fine.
I came to camdenchat and all I got was this lousy avatar.
I keep meaning
to figure out if they have it for blackberry.

I have had Google maps
driving directions be wrong so many times I just don’t trust them. I can think of 3 instances in 3 very different locations where it was just flat wrong by miles. Not cool.

If you haven’t been to the Shirlington area since 1991 you probably wouldn’t recognize it.

Ah yeah the sellers probably aren’t too happy about this transaction. Has there been any recovery in your area?

yeah, things are turning around.
but this was a weekend/investment home that we bought with the idea of renting it out until we could actually afford to stay there whenever we liked. once the economy tanked, the renters stopped coming, and it turned into a moneypit, alas.

That doesn't look too shabby at all....

I don't hate this lineup
I think I rather have Kakes leading off, but other than that, it’s not too shabby.

i'd probably rather not have tejada batting cleanup either.

Yea I saw that
But I rather have Matt get Nick and AJ off base the good way than have Tejada get them off with a dp. If you switch Tejada and Matt you’re basically just giving Matt the lead off job in the 2nd.
"You accept mediocrity and you get mediocrity." - Adam Jones, Son!
i guess you're assuming jones isnt swinging at pitches in the dirt
but i agree. makes more sense to put somebody who can, you know, actually knock in runs behind jones and markakis. you do have to remember that tejada can, in fact, lead off the inning with a GIDP :-)
by twistedlogic on Apr 27, 2010 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea, but...
I don’t mind a solo dp after Matt hits his 25 run HR (as he will be carrying the whole team on his back)
