O's 5, Rays 4: One win down, 94 to go.
Golden Boy Matusz
Ack! Walked five in his debut
But remains awesome
Two hits for Brian
And two more for Matt Wieters
Garrett Atkins woah!
Reimold with the dong
No Achilles trouble here
Racing down the line
Gonzo started strong
But walks and hits piled up
Then Nick saved the day

Atkins was very Birdland.
It’s like he knows we are talking shit.

Yup
I had to give him MBP tho… 2 RBIs is just plain respectable.

Now that we got through the tough portion of the schedule...
bring on the BJ’s!
That was the tough part of the schedule, right?

I know it's just two games, but...
But I’m not feeling great about Gonzo so far

He's throwing way to many pitches
and not enough strikes.

Took my twin 3yr olds to game last year for their bday, their 1st game… They were down with me with their gloves and he wouldn’t sign them…

Twins are considered evil in the Ibo culture.
He may have had a point.
Wow, nice...
Wieters went 2 for 4, and became the first Orioles’ catcher to open the season with three consecutive multihit games.

Unfortunately it pretty much has to be Stupid Face tonight...
but Gonzo single-handedly did his best to ruin all of the combined Birdlandness of the rest of the team.
Bedard says he doesn't care and thinks goals are pointless.
Gonzo seems to have a strong anti-birdland quality in him
Even when he does well he sucks away the birdland

I went with Matusz
That was a gutty performance. He was in trouble from the start, and kept finding ways to limit the damage and finished strong.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Suck it, Trop-- toldja if you got us angry, we'd sweep one outta three! Let this be a lesson to you!
The Blow Jays prolly watched this game and are cowering, ’specially at a confident 3-Mile Speedy lowering his ERA well under 14. Wieters continues to lead the the league in godliness, offering further proof that Matt Wieters is, in fact, only his secret identity. His numbers are so outrageous that east coast media may be forced to spell his name right…before August.
OK, we’re rolling: 1 in a row! Go O’s. And lest anyone forget,

are you saying "piled" has two syllables?

ahah yes
I went over and over that in my head and ultimately decided that piled has two syllables. Pie llld

Followed the game through my iPhone at work
Two girls were actively rooting against the O’s and during the 9th I was really worried, but we managed to pull it off.
I left after the 3rd so Matusz never got a chance to redeem himself for me. I voted BRob for MBP for finally getting some hits (including his first double of the season).
Will we ever have a closer who can just go three up, three down? I suppose it makes things interesting, but that’s a little too interesting for me. Why can’t we have nice things?
Nice

OK, one series down. How we doing on the respectability scale?
SP: all showed us what to be optimistic about, but none of them went deep enough. OK, it’s early, but if the Os are going to have any kind of success, these guys are going to have to go 6-7, not 5-6, consistently.
RP: Pretty darn good. BUT, Albers wont make it far into the season pitching every day and the early take on our much-heralded “legitimate closer” is “OMG NOOOOO!” JJ is also troubling. DD needs a Plan B for the 8th & 9th in close games.
Defense: SFSG, and the consensus on Miggy is that he will be just fine. Now if we could just get someone out in left without an icepack…
Offense: Assuming Os are giving up 4 runs a game (as they did against a good Tampa Bay offense), then they need to score 4.1+, up from 3.7. That’s not too tall an order IF: No more injuries; any of our question marks (Atkins, Tejada) gets into a groove; and our free-swingers (AJ, Luke) show some more discipline.
I will say, and some others did as well..
JJ’s pitches looked pretty good. He’s throwing it hard and down.. they just made some really good swings on it. Didn’t really leave any ball up.
Respectability
Here’s how I see it: We finished a 3 game series with one of the big boys scoring only 1 less run then them. Sure, losing 2 out of 3 sucks, but we were right with them every step of the way. That’s respectable in my eyes.
"You accept mediocrity and you get mediocrity." - Adam Jones, Son!
And really
we easily could have won all 3 with a couple different breaks here and there (Tejada’s bases loaded screamer being 5 inches one direction or another, Pie instead of Reimold catching that ball in left, etc).

I think it's time
we quit making acceptable pitching Birdland. That was SOOOO last year. We need to expect good pitching and turn great pitching into Birdlandedness.
Jioe Flaacco, Hon!!! "He’s like a live JUGS machine."
I'll admit
I did vote for Matusz, but only because the 1st win of your rookie of the year campaign is a big one. I do think I would go with Atkins now though. Talk about unexpected performance…

matusz was actually my third place today
atkins was number one. brian roberts returning to his post of doubles MACHINE is also pretty birdland. i was so happy that i decided put aside my OPEN LETTER TO BRIAN ROBERTS until later.

couldnt vote for matusz....
those walks nearly killed us and walks are definitely not birdland. plus atkins will spend 95 percent of his time in the CC doghouse, so its nice to see him emerge from his hole for a few innings.
+1
At least 95 percent, which is what made last night so birdland.

Two years of Gonzalez
Yikes. All we can hope is he settles down. But that slider(?) he throws is scary as hell. Looks like he has to take something off it to get it over the plate and it floats in. If that continues, he’s not long for this closer role.
maybe if he stops that goofy windup he's got
guy is flailing all over the place. no wonder he cant find the damned plate.

Had to vote for Atkins
Before the game I wanted to punch his squinty eyed face everytime I saw it. After the game I no longer wanted to do such a thing. That’s birdland to me.
My girlfriend is all like “Why do you hate him so much?!?” And I’m all like “Yea, whateva.”
