It took you until June to figure this out? And you had to "crunch offensive stats" before you could see it was necessary? Jeez Louise! When today stinks...look to the future

A nice piece on Brandon Waring. Playing very well in AA. Is he an option next year? Is he considered a major league prospect?

3B or 1B?

Last year I thought he played 1B (Little help JamesF?). He does have similar numbers this year to Bell (AA vs AAA though) but are better than Synder’s. I wonder if he moves back to 1B if Synder doesn’t pick it up, maybe with a midseason promotion to AAA and assuming Bell stays down all year.

What a trade

Didn’t we get Brandon Waring from the Reds in the Ramon Hernandez trade? If yes, I take back anything bad I ever said about Andy McPhail. Well, most of the bad stuff, I still can’t see past the Atkins signing.

I know he isn't considered to be much of a defender at third...

….but there is still a chance he could be adequate. I think mainly he was playing first early on because the O’s were experimenting with moving Tyler Henson to third, but about midway through the season gave up on that and put Henson in the outfield. After that, Waring played more third for Frederick, but this year they’ve used him at first again.

Not my call

Her coach knows a hell of a lot more about SB pitching than I do. I DO NOT second guess him on anything softball-related. (And I wasn’t keeping a pitch count during the game.)

She throws 100 pitches 3-4 days a week. The softball motion is a lot easier on the shoulder and elbow than a baseball motion. And yes, she ices after practices and games.

Yeah

most major softball university teams only use one pitcher for every game. It’s not like the baseball motion at all.

Don't take this the wrong way,

but even that seems like a lot of walks. I take it that’s just the norm for softball games at her age?

It’s not like she’s in the top 5 pitchers in her league, and she’s got another year of rec ball after this year before high school JV. She’s got time to get her control.

Cool.

Good luck to her.

I only got to pitch for a year or so, I guess in 7th grade. On most of my teams, only the coaches’ kids got to pitch most of the time. This was very, very exasperating once they hit the point where they couldn’t throw anything over the plate, and I had to stand out in RF and watch, knowing I could just jog up, throw a few warmup pitches, and at least make the dude swing. Stupid favoritism.

Nice.

I really don’t get his idea that the whole O’s blogosphere is just a bunch of team cheerleaders. I mean, what blogs does he actually read? Apparently not (just off my own list I check almost daily) CamdenCrazies, Dempsey’s Army, The Loss Column, Camden Depot, The Wayward Oriole, or Weaver’s Tantrum. They’re all critical of the Orioles, without any caveats, when they disagree with a decision. Are they just not relentlessly negative enough for him?

They’ve been pretty decent. That said, the blog post in question really seems ridiculous. To me, it reads like, “We’ve given your site a ton of free publicity and you haven’t done the same for us.” Except that Stacey has, both by announcing her three-time-a-week gig on here many times, and also linking to the “Buy a Toyota Audio Vault” whenever something particularly interesting or juicy is discussed. Maybe there haven’t been any links to stories in the Bird Droppings, but honestly, that site is such a mess of links and text and animations and scroll bars that it’s hard to find anything. It’s a cacophony of visual noise that is unpleasant to sift through.

by PhilR8 on May 12, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

It's amazing to me

that Drew thinks there some sort of conspiracy against him. I can’t speak for Stacey, (or the other mods) but I imagine if he would have simply sent her (or them) an email saying, “Hey, could you post a link to my Free the Birds column,” it would have been done. In the past, I’ve seen links and advertisements for WNST’s rallies protesting the O’s and Angelos. I don’t see why this would be a problem now. Instead, he writes some moronic column making stupid generalizations and assumptions. Before today, I’ve read Drew a few times, thought he was a hack, and I quit reading him. It’s nothing against him personally. I don’t like the columnists for the Sun either. But that column today only further solidifies my opinion of him as an idiot.

Granted I have only been there for two days. last year.

But it really seemed on the up and up to me. Count me as thoroughly impressed by Pittsburgh. Seemed like a lot of underground urban rebirth coolness going on.

It does seem to be on the up and up

Plus the southside has the most bars per block in the country I believe. So they’ve got that going for them.

Memo to Drew Forrester, who probably isn't reading anyway

Nobody who isn’t at WNST gives a crap about Free The Birds. As we like to say around here: deal with it.

P.S. Your website sucks, which may also have something to do with the fact that you never get linked.

P.P.S. If you want to convince people of your passion for the Baltimore Orioles, try staying to watch the entirety of, say, an Opening Day game against the Tampa Bay Rays. That way, when the new $12 million closer blows the game, you can have an informed opinion the next day when you talk about whatever it is you talk about.

P.P.P.S. But that was a really epic chicken tenders eating contest, wasn’t it?

I'm ready for a straight jacket. - Joe Angel, 4/17/10 (O's record: 1-11)

Thank you for the memo. It is very helpful.

I never listen to the show, so I have no idea what I’ve talked about. But I will say mmm mmmm chicken tenders.

by snotboogie on May 12, 2010 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions

That eating contest was pretty cool

UH-60 was ten seconds away from winning. If he hadn’t paused to call the other guy gay, he might have even won!

by PhilR8 on May 12, 2010 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Can't believe the Phillies hat guy won

…but it was a pretty swell night all around, especially when it got to the ninth and it was just us, and I didn’t have Nestor hovering over me regaling me with tales of how awful spring training was in 2003 at Fort Lauderdale.

It was good times even though we didn't bet any real money

although I haven’t seen Gregory O around much since then. Maybe we scared him away.

And “Nes” bought me a beer, so I didn’t mind listening to his retread stories. Probably because I was drunk and I’m a coward.

by PhilR8 on May 12, 2010 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

He was great, and it was fun

but…it was Opening Day! I wanted to watch the game and not listen to reasons why the Orioles suck. It was Opening Day! We were winning at the time!

yes agree

I did find it funny how he was saying that angelos doesn’t contribute to the community blah blah blah, and just the week before the GF and I had gone to the myerhoff symphony hall and Angelos practically donated an entire wing of that place.

by PhilR8 on May 12, 2010 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL he said that?

Wow. Angelos may have a ton of faults, but lack of contributions to the community is not one of them. In fact I think that every morning as I drive past the John and Frances Angelos Law Center on my way to work.

Actually...

I could be wrong, but wasn’t a big problem with CPatt1.0 the fact that he refused to do things like drop a bunt or go the other way with the ball? Dude could burn on the bases, I’ll give him that.

“I do think there is something to be said for working the count a little better. Taking some pitches,” said Trembley, who said he crunched some offensive statistics on Monday’s off day. OMFG. It took you until June to figure this out? And you had to “crunch offensive stats” before you could see it was necessary? Jeez Louise! Tune in next week, when Dave discovers that it actually doesn’t make sense to have wild pitchers give up IBBs to load the bases.

(Heads slams on desk). Next week Dave discovers that sacrifice bunts cost the team outs.

It was mentioned above by zk...

But would someone please tell Dave to STOP INTENTIONALLY WALKING PEOPLE! Especially when it loads the bases, kthanksbye.

Seriously, when he walked Ichiro to get to Figgins, I had flashbacks to DH’s first start against TOR, when we walked the 8th guy to get to one of the Molina Bros, whom DH promptly plunked to force the run in. So what does a pitcher with a demonstrated lack of control do in a tight spot against a talented (albeit slumping) hitter? He fucking walks him.

by TerroristFistJab on May 12, 2010 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously

intentionally walking guys to load the bases when your pitcher has command that’s questionable at best is completely ridiculous.

Fantasy Question

Would you trade Morneau and Justin Upton for Pujols if you have Markakis on the bench in a 5×5 league? Do you think over the course of the rest of the year you’ll get better Average, Runs, HR, RBI, and SBs from Pujols/Markakis than from Morneau/Upton? Obviously you probably lose SBs with that trade…

Reimold down Patterson up

No surprise but still really a downer to see Patterson back in an O’s uniform to provide a spark with his .29something lifetime OBP. I bet he’s leading off. I guess this can get more dismal, but not by much.

Right...

There has to be some reason Nolan was the one to go, but the fact that this move also didn’t involve giving Lugo his walking papers makes me sad.

Maybe

this is Lou’s last chance before he’s given his unconditional (anyone know if he has options left?) release? At the very least Nolan gets a chance to fix his swing at a slightly lower level of competition through regular playing itme.

How in the hell did this outfield go from the are of strength on this team to one that employs both Corey Patterson and Lou Montanez?

Seriously depressing

I went into this season thinking we might have one of the best OFs in baseball and now it’s Markakis and 2 borderline minor leaguers every night.

Y'know what'd be really bad.

If he performs poorly in Norfolk, and isn’t even with the team when they give out his bobblehead. I’ve heard of hitting a homerun on your bobblehead night, but I’ve never heard of not being on the team for your bobblehead giveaway.

Cleveland had a V-Mart bobblehead day a week after he was traded to Boston

I rather Reimold be in Nofolk for his bobblehead day than there. Hell, I rather him be in Bluefield than there.
