Orioles 6, Mariners 5: Corey Patterson vs. Luke Scott
The debate rages on in the game thread. What is more Birdland? Is it the go ahead grand salami by Luke Scott in the 8th inning? Or is it the solo home run before Luke's granny followed by throwing out the tying run at home to end the game by Corey Patterson?
What'll it be, friends?

I put this in the game thread...but thought I'd add it here. Does it matter? probably not.

A month ago, against the Rays, Luke Scott came on to hit a pinch-hit 2-run dong to tie the game in the 8th. The O’s went on to lose 8-6. Stacey saw fit to not include a MBP for that game cause it was definitely heart-breaking. Someone else put up a fan-post the next day for MBP, and Luke wasnt even on the ballot.
I complained…Luke was added…but still mustered only 7 votes out of 160. Late inning HRs, apparently, are meaningless if the team doesn’t go on to WIN the game. The team doesnt WIN this game without CPs awesome throw at home to end the game…ERGO, CP IS MBP
Well, we don't know that they don't win it
It’s possible that they win it in extras. I went with Luke, but damn, this is the kind of harrowing decision I love to have to make.

Even if they tie it... we still have the bottom of the 9th
And if Simon didn’t allow the baserunners it would have never even come to the potential TYING play (with us being the home team and still getting a bat in the bottom of the 9th + potential win in extras).

I like to read the game thread for the opposing team when the Orioles win
And let me say that when someone in their game thread says something like, “Well, at least we’re not the Orioles,” it makes that win so much sweeter. Especially when it’s some punk team like the Mariners who, after today, have exactly two more wins than the Orioles despite having not played the Yankees or Red Sox yet and only three against the Rays.
the sad thing is that these assholes are only 6 games back.
I came to camdenchat and all I got was this lousy avatar.
IF
we had had a chill 9th inning and there was no ridiculously exciting out at the plate to end the game, my vote would be with Luke. However, given the circumstances, I’m gonna have to hand this one to Corey.
BTW. Turned on this game at the top of the 8th, what timing! Way exciting finish.

According to UZR (please no fighting!) Corey has a roughly average arm, while Pie and Reimold are both above average. My eyes agree on Felix and Nolan; they don’t quite have the cannons of Markakis and Jones, but they still have good arms.

Give Luke a ton of credit for getting the big hit at the right time. But on the other hand, you can’t help when you come up to bat. It’s not Corey’s fault there was nobody on base at the time. So the defensive play puts him over the top.

The unique visitor metric is also determined by cookies
So clearing the cookies creates a new unique visit. I spend far less time on this site than you and I am stunned to hear that you can’t imagine anyone caring that much. Winning the poll could have meant vindication in their little worlds. In fact, in regards to a few commenters, ballot stuffing in upwards 50-100 votes is highly likely, i think.
And though I voted for CP, I am happy to see that Luke won because it meant my least favorite commenter lost.

So pitcher's can't be birdland when playing american league games then
by your rationale
The future is not what it used to be.
by John Stephens on May 14, 2010 8:03 AM EDT up reply actions
Did he say anything about a pitcher?
The current comparison is between somebody who got one hit and somebody who got multiple hits and made a game saving defensive play. Pitching did not enter the equation here.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
He implied that he deserves the MBP because he got hits AND played defense. Picthers can only play defense and not hit. So by his odd rule, pitchers cannot be birdland.
My point is you do not have to do both to be birdland. Hitting a grand slam makes you birdland. You don’t need to add defense to win the award when one swing of the bat put your team in the lead after being down by 3.
The future is not what it used to be.
by John Stephens on May 14, 2010 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions
He implied that because the ONLY other option on the ballot is somebody who only hit.
His point was not general, but rather specific in nature. He also wasn’t even stating a rule. It was an exclamation about a single player in a single game.
But I’ll keep in mind that hitting a grand slam automatically makes you birdland. haha speaking of absurd rules.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
How in the hell is hitting a HR that results in 4 RBIs not birdland? How is that absurd?
The future is not what it used to be.
by John Stephens on May 14, 2010 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions
There are very few things that are automatically birdland no matter what else happens in the game – maybe hitting for the cycle, hitting 3 HRs, throwing a no-hitter or a PG. Hitting a grand slam is not one of them. That’s why so many people voted for the other guy. And again I think a fair amount of the ones who didn’t are probably confusing MBP with MVP…

Is it unheard of for a majority to be wrong?
I just saw a poll that said that something like 65% of Americans support the new immigration law in Arizona. Majorities don’t really determine what’s right or wrong.
And also, just now I wasn’t arguing with you about whether Luke didn’t deserve MBP (as I say below there’s a very legitimate argument for him winning it – I disagree with it, but it’s certainly valid), but whether a grandslam by itself was necessarily worthy of MBP. This is the comment:
Hitting a grand slam makes you birdland.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
I think
hitting a grand slam makes you Birdland, period. However, it’s not necessarily enough to make you most Birdland.
I went with Luke because it was a come-from-behind grand slam, while credit for that play at the plate seemed more like 75% Wieters to me.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
Good point about the MOST - that's certainly true.
My vote for CP was not strictly for that throw, but also for his HR and double and for doing well when EVERYBODY expected him to suck.

I voted Luke MBP
and I know the difference between MBP and MVP.

I didn't say all! Just some.
There’s a perfectly legitimate argument for Luke as MBP – I just don’t think EVERYBODY who voted for him did so because of that. Some people just think grand slams are extra special.

No, I hear ya
That’s true with just about every vote though.

is there a formal statement on how to vote for MBP?
I came to camdenchat and all I got was this lousy avatar.
Ha, I actually wrote one up for it once
Not really formal, but I described it. I got holy hell from everybody. People said describing it made it stupid and it is something you should just get.

At the risk of inciting hatred directed my way...
here is where I originally posted it. It actually was way too formal, but you can check it out for yourself.

Well, it wasn't an attempt to get people to think exactly like I do
just to show the differences between MBP and MVP for people who didn’t get it. I guess it came off a bit too corporate though.

I thought it was fine as a guideline, but not the end all in how to vote for MBP.
I came to camdenchat and all I got was this lousy avatar.
That's basically what it was supposed to be
in fact I think I even said something along the lines of “these are just examples and can be judged however you like” but people weren’t cool with it, so it died in that post.

you're cool in my book dave, except for not liking bruce springsteen.

i love this argument i started hahahah
it didnt even have anything to do with MBP. i was more of a wink wink nudge nudge to adam jones that, you know, that stuff is good.

Well thank you sir
and you are in mine as well, except for liking Bruce Springsteen

we hardly ever follow that anymore
the starting pitcher almost always wins MBP

That's because good performances
were almost always unexpected

I just laughted from the sheer riduculousness of this.

LUKE FOOOOOOOOL!
sorry I’m not sure what the question was.
but LUKE FOOOOOL
"We don't report the murders just the beatings!"
its amazing how you knew...
I was talking exclusively to you.
"We don't report the murders just the beatings!"
what exactly was so birdland about luke doing what he supposed to do? (and losing style points in his trot by stopping, confused, as usual unsure where the ball was) when my my corey came off a park bench two days ago and already has sparked 2 wins.
you know what’s rarer than a grand slam? a game ended throw home. that’s what. case closed. and that followed a HR that, while a solo, was as crucial as anything else.
case closed.
