That will show him
You know what I’d like to see? Trembley say “I told him, ‘You won’t see your name in the lineup again until you’ve done ten laps around OPACY, and if you do that again, it will be twenty.”
I believe in treating professional adults like professional adults, not like backups on a high school football team. But this is part of the problem with Dave. Atkins is one of the older guys on our team. He’s getting paid millions on a team loaded with guys making the minimum. He’s got “playoff experience” – hell, he’s been to the World Series.
It would be one thing if Atkins was just hitting poorly. But he’s not playing hard. He’s not someone who came up in our system or who is part of this team going forward. He HAS to be one of the first guys who gets his ass busted publicly for not trying hard. It needs to be clear that if we’re stuck dumping him and eating $4.5 million that we’re going to make it abundantly clear to everyone that’s he’s a lazy sod unworthy of another major league contract.
He’s embarrassed our front office, who thought he was a hard worker deserving of a starting spot in our lineup and multiple millions of dollars. He’s embarrassed his teammates, some of whom are sitting on the bench because they are supposed to be not as good as Atkins and will give us a worse chance to win. At what point do those people start to hold him accountable?

I mean...
I’m with you sort of, but he really IS hitting well now. And I don’t think this mistake was a “not playing hard” mistake – it was more of just a dumbass “I thought it was foul” mistake. Obviously you should run regardless of whether you think it’s foul, but it’s not nearly the same as if he hit a routine grounder and dogged it or he hit a popup and dogged it.
So yeah it was bad, but I don’t know about your last paragraph about him embarrassing everybody.

He really isn't
Sure, he’s batting .270. But his overall offense is actually quite worse than it was last season when he hit .226, because he’s got a walk rate of 2.6% and an ISO of .068. He has two extra base hits in his last 17 games. He has two walks all season.
He’s hitting terribly. Even with seven hits in his last four games he has a net negative WPA for that period.

Sure overall
but what about over the last two weeks? I’m not saying he’s going to be a stud or anything, but the season is 5 weeks old and for the last two of them he’s .348/.375/.391/.766. Given that it often takes guys some time to adjust to a new (much better) league and new (much better) pitchers I’m not too bothered by his current hitting.
But again my point was that he’s really not “embarrassing” anybody and to back off the ledge a little bit.

Dear Orioles,
Please use this incident to release Garrett Atkins, since clearly his offensive abilities are not disconcerting to you.
Best regards

Why on earth
would you release the guy as soon as he starts hitting well??? You’re going to pay him $5 M for the season regardless.

A lesson should be taught....
If you don’t RUN hard at all times….then you walk away.We are already what,30 games out of first place, its time to bring more kids up and let them play.I watched Montagne look like a little leaguer trying to catch a fly ball in Yankee stadium,it was as poor as any outfielder I have seen in the majors.Bring up more kids until you find the ones who want to play the game he way it should be…and Tremley can go to!
Who the hell is Montagne? And who is Tremley? And what are these kids that we could bring up that you speak of?
