I'm excited about the Grand Prix
I don’t normally give a crap about that kind of thing, but it’ll be cool to see on the streets of Baltimore. Plus it’ll be great for the city.

I can't wait to see the track layout/route..
It’s gotta be down past the harbor, need to make Baltimore look like Monaco as much as possible.
Though if you want the cars to go faster just send em through a dodgy neighborhood or two.

I think it will be awesome.
And so long as tickets are resonable I would go.

I'm with you on this
As a one-time novelty thing, or maybe even every other year or something, I think that would be pretty neat to see. Baltimore Grand Prix just sounds cool.

Is it definite?
The article seemed to be written as if it was a done deal except for: "If selected by the Indy Racing League, Baltimore would join Toronto, Long Beach, Calif., and Sao Paulo, Brazil, as Indy Racing sites. "
I would definitely make the drive down to watch them race through the streets.

Interesting thoughts on Taillion over on sickels blog
http://www.minorleagueball.com/2010/5/5/1459544/discussion-question-overrated#comments
In short, they dont think the gap between Taillon and the next couple prep arms is that great. Also they think the O’s will not take Taillon for that reason.
"I have seen the future and his name is Matt Wieters." Keith Law
Eh
I tend to agree that the difference between Taillon and Whitson isn’t that huge. That said, Taillon is to my mind better. I will be mildly displeased if the Orioles select Whitson with Taillon still on the board, less because of Whitson himself, but more because I won’t like what it says about our organization.
Let’s be clear: neither Sickels or Seiler is saying there that Whitson is as good as Taillon. They think he’s not that much worse for less money. And if the Orioles make that choice for that reason, then it will put paid to the notion that they took Hobgood when Matzek and Turner were available because they really thought Hobgood was better than they were. Meanwhile, the saved money isn’t significantly going to other forms of farm system expansion that set us apart from the rest of the league, an area where we now appear to be lagging behind the Royals of all teams. It will be yet more evidence that we are penny wise and pound dumber than a box of rocks. Not proof of that, mind you, but evidence.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
You made a very important point there
If we did, in fact, take Hobgood over the others because of signability reasons that would be a bad sign. Picking based on signability is a dangerous strategy in the long run. That said, I think we’ll end up with Machado or a college arm because I dont think they make these decisions on signability. Instead I think that they believe in the notion that quantity is just as important as quality when considering prep arms.
That being said, this year should tell us a lot about how the organization will approach the draft. Any decent organization can know to draft a Wieters talent, but who you draft when there isn’t a clear BPA is where you need a good scouting department and director.

O's picked Hobgoblin after Ackley was off the board
And it panned as a signability pick, but as I recall their first choice was Ackley. There was some video where the Hobgood family all knew he was going to the O’s the moment Ackley was picked because the O’s made it clear he would be the choice in that event.
Matusz was a pretty clear pick. So it seems the O’s under MacPhail went with a reasonably certain pick followed by a questionable one.
Also recall that Gonzalez is costing the O’s their second round pick. That’s working out real swell. Given what we’ve seen with MacPhail, they have to absolutely nail their drafts. He talks about buying bats, but there is no evidence that means anything other than try to get some cheap talent and hope you catch lightening in a bottle (a la Carlos Pena). Maybe I’ve been trained to expect the worst from this franchise.
I had sorta forgotten about the Ackley thing
But there is no doubt in my mind that they would have taken him if he had fallen.
Matusz was somewhat clear, Smoak was the other option and he would have been a fine pick but i’m glad we went with Matusz obviously.
Losing a second round pick isn’t the worst thing in the world, it just means they should draft a few extra over-slot guys later on. Still hurts though. I try and give this FO the benefit of the doubt because they are doing some things right, hopefully they do enough things right though.

If Pomeranz falls to 1-3
we should jump all over him. Dude is a monster, and he’s been destroying the SEC for 3 years now.
08: 4-3, 4.16, 81:30
09; 8-4, 3.40, 124:37
10: 6-0, 1.85, 104:34
Matt Wieters has a sustainably high BABIP
O's related questions in KLaw's chat today
http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/chat/_/id/32223/mlb-insider-keith-law
Brian (MD): With pick 3 do you see the O’s going pitcher maybe somebody like Pomeraz or Taillon or position player maybe somebody like Machado?
Klaw: Taillon. That’s about as strong a rumor as I’ve heard on any team other than Harper to the Nats.
Dan (Chicago): Seems like most draft commentary I’ve seen has the O’s preferring Taillon to Machado. But given their abundance of pitching and big hole at SS, shouldn’t they at least be giving Machado a hard look?
Klaw: I don’t think they’ve failed to do their due diligence on Machado, but I know several scouts and at least two directors who think Taillon is a special case, an advanced prep arm with present plus stuff who should be treated more like a college guy.
Sometimes I just want to talk about beer, blowjobs and baseball, y’know? -2632
Yeah.
He’s seemed pretty convinced in most of his chats and articles that we’ll take Taillon.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
OK
The interesting thing is that generally speaking, I’ll look a lot more favorably on whoever we pick once we pick them, simply because I think Joe Jordan is very good and his high opinion of someone raises my opinion of them.
Now I sound like a homer, I know.

Lack of depth
The Os woes are attributable to lack of depth. Remember, that when AM took over, the Os had both a terrible major league team and a terrible minor league system. He inherited an organization that was terrible in both drafting and developing young players. He has made real progress, but the talent is thin on the ground. So, when the team loses 4-5 front line players to injury, the result is the disaster that we have seen this year. Because there are no replacements in Norfolk, the misery will continue. But, please don’t start trading prospects for mediocre, over-the-hill players just to stop the bleeding.

Damnit, no wonder we lost this game
I’m making a dub of the Orioles-Toronto game from 1989 where we lost the East. Tim Hulett just popped up with a runner on 3rd and less than 2 outs and Cal did the same thing earlier. We should have won this series but we left a ton of runners on the bases in both the games.
