Report: Orioles interviewed Eric Wedge; Bobby Valentine on deck

From the Baltimore Sun:

Orioles President of Baseball Operations Andy MacPhail met face-to-face with former Cleveland Indians skipper Eric Wedge on Wednesday as part of an ongoing search to find the club's next manager, according to an industry source.

Wedge is believed to be the first candidate to be interviewed by MacPhail. Former New York Mets manager and current ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine is in Baltimore today to interview.

MacPhail was out of the office for most of Thursday, and one industry source said he was conducting another interview. But details of that have not been disclosed.

MacPhail is not discussing specifics of his managerial search. When contacted by phone Friday morning, Wedge declined comment.

Ooh, who do you think the secret, third interview is with? Could it be....RICK DEMPSEY?

Wouldn't it be weird...

if the Orioles started winning under Juan Samuel?
Then what?
I did say it would be “weird”. I didn’t say it was going to happen…

well...

at one point they won under Trembley, or else he wouldn’t have lost the “Interim” tag.

What up?

Bobby V!

Insert something witty here.

Well, it is reported that we're in on Showalter.

I honestly wouldn’t be shocked if the secret meeting is with Cal.

Only time they meet with Cal

is the transition during the sale to his ownership group.

Cal Ripken will NEVER manage this team.

Probably not

But I wouldn’t be surprised if they talked to him, just as a courtesy and to say they did, so that he can’t come out and say anything bad like he did earlier in the year about his relationship with the club.

Bobby V is my pick

He was high on the O’s to start the year at one point calling them his “surprise contender” team. Really surprised he didn’t jump on the job just to get in in time for the Mets series this weekend.

i think that would finally put me over the edge. i’d really have to walk away for a while.

It should be Bob Melvin

His name has been linked to our managerial position, and to me he’s just as good a candidate as Wedge or Valentine.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

ok,

but why is he better?

by kba26 on Jun 11, 2010 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Compared to Wedge,

Wedge mostly underachieved with the Indians except for one year. Melvin squeezed every last bit of talent out of a 2007 Arizona team that went to the NLCS, and they were actually outscored in the regular season.

As far as Valentine, I would not be disappointed with Bobby V as manager, but Melvin gets the nod because
a. He was on the ‘89 ’Why Not’ Orioles
b. He’s Jewish

Damn, at least you're honest

so, is it OK for me to like Bobby V because he’s Italian and I married into an Italian family? Just trying to figure out the rules here.

I dunno, that all feels a little borderline to me

Like i’d get plenty of shit if i said i prefer Wedge because he ISNT jewish (and righfully so)

i want bobby v because he claims to have invented the wrap sandwich.

This

is all logic we can get behind.

by kba26 on Jun 11, 2010 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions

But my argument around why I want him

isn’t centered around him being Jewish. Your hypothetical reasons for not wanting Melvin are only about him being Jewish. There’s a difference.

Why are they doing this now?

Why pick a manager now, when the best options may not be available? The best guy for the job may already be employed and not available for an interview. This just looks like its going to lead to yet another crappy manager.

With that said, I have always like Bobby Valentine, so I wouldn’t mind him. But none of the other options excite me.

we have to stop teh suck and we have to stop it now - is your answer

by thewaywardO on Jun 11, 2010 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah!!!

We’re only 20 games out of first place, so we need to hire NOW, ASAP, IMMEDIATELY!!! So that we can make the playoffs this season…..or something

by wishEYEhadCRABS on Jun 11, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

It's not a matter of "new manager will suddenly propel us to first place"

We need to have somebody in there at this point who will keep a losing mentality from seeping into the heads of our promising young players. Regrettably this has probably already happened to an extent with some of them and so there’s also the question of reversing some of that.

At this point it’s as much important for the psychological impact as anything else. Now, maybe Juan Samuel’s the best we can get for that for the rest of this season – reference last night where he seemed to be telling Luke Scott that you’d better run out of the box because that’s how we’re going to play baseball. Maybe Bobby V comes in and does that better, or Eric Wedge or whoever. I don’t know.

But for me it’s a pretty compelling argument to make a change if it’s warranted.

Sure, we’ll still suck for the rest of the year but somebody needs to keep guys doing the best they can to play good baseball so that foundation is still there when the time comes where maybe we can right the ship.

by duck on Jun 11, 2010 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions

There's alot more available at the end of the season

Ron Roenicke and Ryne Sandberg are two up and coming managers that I’ve heard of lately. Both are currently employed and unavailable for an interview. There are dozens of other options that I’m not aware of that could also be good managers and aren’t available. I just think its foolish to completely ignore these potential candidates to get a guy in an already lost season.

There’s also probably a good reason why this current group of candidates (Valentine, etc.) are unemployed midseason.

by edsachs1 on Jun 12, 2010 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

no reason to believe that the best options will be available later

wedge, valentine, melvin are all good options.

later they may not be available and you get stuck talking to dusty baker.

BOBBY V all the way baby

there is now way in hell I want Wedge. My cousin lives in Cleveland and said he has an ego the size of Mount Rushmore. Plus Bobby V has always been one of my all time favorite managers.

I really like Bobby V. I think he's a funny guy.

But can someone tell me why they think he’s a great manager? I mean, I think he’s ok. I just dont see why he’s GOT to be the choice.

Every where he went he seems to have turned around underperforming teams

Only to be fired due to personal conflicts. Sounds to me he’s exactly what we need right now. The trick just is convincing him to take the job, he’s been at the top of most search lists for the past few seasons and has so far declined.

by kba26 on Jun 11, 2010 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw a very interesting documentary on Bobby V.'s Japanese league coaching stint

The followed him around during the course of the season and after the season. His knowledge, enthusiasm and passion for the game of baseball were clear. I’d be very happy to see him in the O’s dugout.

C'mon, besides Crow how many Jewish-Italian managers who invented the Post-It note and pita bread *are* there?

Just the one, right? OK, so we can flip for it and decide this thing before lunch, right?

Waiting till the end of the season is completely asinine

The longer our young up and comers continue playing in this poisonous atmosphere the harder it will be to rehabilitate them. Wieters, Matusz, Jones, et all need to be rescued ASAP and Bob Melvin based on past results seems like a perfect match. Eric Wedge would be a disaster and the less I say about Dempsey the better for all.
