Orioles Insider: Was Bergesen good enough?
Nothing's been decided as to who will start Saturday's game for the Orioles. Looks like it's down to either Brad Bergesen or Chris Tillman. I vote for "none of the above." -duck
Orioles Insider: Injured O's and timelines - - baltimoresun.com
Among the updates is this sad truth: "Roberts has been shut down from any baseball activity for the time being. Samuel said in San Francisco that he had spoken to Roberts and estimated that he was four to six weeks away from a return. That means you are probably looking at August at the earliest. But there have been a lot of stops and starts in Roberts' situation, making this one difficult to predict as well." Yup, I think duck may have called it early when he said Bri-Bob would be out for the year. -zk

Young ballplayers learn from the pros at Orioles baseball camp
The O's are running a week long instructional camp for kids, with former Orioles such as Joe Orsulak participating. Adam Jones will also be making an appearance, perhaps to show the young'uns how to misjudge balls that have been hit over your head. -zk

This is the one day this week I didn’t have to have my kids at the Y by 9 am, so I took the opportunity to sleep in. Just went a little later than I planned….

Uh, what?
From Buster Olney’s daily ESPN column:
The concern among rival talent evaluators about the Orioles is that the constant losing is shaping the mindset of the team’s young players. For example, after the Orioles lost an early lead on Sunday in San Diego and wound up getting crushed 9-4, sources say that Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones directly lobbied for his first-inning bouncer to be changed from an error to a hit. The scoring on the play was changed, hours after the fact, and Jones got his hit, but for a player to make a direct appeal — especially in the aftermath of a one-sided lost — isn’t exactly conventional.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
Sounds like horseshit. If not though it’s pretty absurd.

I'm skeptical.
I think someone pointed out yesterday that the official rules require it be changed to a hit; I looked it up.
Rule 10.12(a)(1) Comment: Slow handling of the ball that does not involve mechanical misplay shall not be construed as an error.
So I’m hoping that the “sources” are full of it, but I’m still kinda concerned.

It’s also just pretty hard for a player (especially a non-established star) to challenge a ruling in a road ballpark. How would he know who to talk to or who to call? At Camden Yards I might believe it, but he’s never played in the San Diego stadium before – it’s not like there’s a phone in the dugout that goes directly to the official scorer.

he grew up in San Diego
I bet he has “connections” to the baseball mafia there.

This has been going on since like the 2nd or 3rd blown save
They don’t have the personnel in place to stop it. No managers or coaches to keep the kids going. Argue what you will, I think a solid coaching staff from the getgo gives us 10-15 more wins. The kids are pressing way too much and there’s no support for them to fall back on.

10-15 more wins now??
Or 10-15 more wins over the course of the full season?
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
We've blown what, 15 saves?
Last i heard we were like .219 with RISP. Considering the amount of 1-2 run games we’ve lost, I think 10-15 more wins now is not out of the question.
by GeoffreyA on Jun 22, 2010 1:30 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The 15 blown saves
just means games that we were winning at some point and a reliever giving up that lead. I don’t see how having a different coaching staff would make our relievers more effective. I also don’t see how having a different coaching staff would make our hitters any better.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
I think a competent manager would have
made better decisions with the bullpen personel which would have resulted in a few less blown saves.

That’s a big maybe when the bullpen is really pretty bad. And a few less blown saves doesn’t get you anywhere near 10-15 wins.

I wasn't the one who said that.

part of the reason the bullpen is so bad
is how it’s been used.

I guess a small part
but it’s also bad because all the guys who sit in there are bad at pitching.

Hmm
Ok, I understand your point completely. But I can’t stress enough how much I really think that Crowley has fucked up the young kids. It seems they are regressing daily with no end in sight. As I noted before, Markakis stated the one game that HE, not he and crowley, HE sat down and figured out why he started out so bad. Everyone wants all these kids to go back down to the minors to “relearn xxxx”. In reality most of us just want them away from the ML staff.
Every week there’s a few articles about “is the coaching staff hurting the Os” etc… Hell, last week after teh 9th inning loss to SD, Samuel was laughing in the post-game interview about taking teh tough loss. Explain to me what sort of leadership that is. It’s amazing what a good manager/staff can do with a bad team and vice versa. I can’t even name teh amount of times I’ve read articles about Wieters, Jones, Matusz, Markakis, et al pressing too much because they are trying to hard to win and not doing what comes naturally.
I could be completely wrong, who knows. But there just seems to be too many failed, failed or teetering top-end prospects on this team for it to be this bad.

I mean I get it
I just have no clue how much the coaching staff even matters. I agree they seem shitty, but I don’t think the best coaches in the world would make this team a 35-35 team.

Great, now even David Letterman is making fun of us
“Over the weekend, at Yankee Stadium, Lady Gaga goes into the Yankees clubhouse, takes off all her clothes and gives everybody there the finger. It’s been … what she’s doing now, she’s going to go from stadium to stadium, making a fool of herself. It’s like the Orioles.”
Ouch.
That stings. But it is pretty funny. Better than most of the recycled jokes I’ve been hearing … “I want to live with the Orioles, they don’t beat anybody.”

harper
I saw a Harper update in the Heyman article.
The initial number going around for No. 1 overall draft choice Bryce Harper is $12 million — though a person close to Harper called that a "management’’ number. Many execs see Harper beating Mark Teixeira’s $9.5 million record for a position player but falling short of Stephen Strasburg’s record $15.067-million bonus — though the Nationals are making so much money on Strasburg, it’ll be interesting to see whether that loosens their purse strings on Harper.
Hmm, I wonder who that person close to Harper is? Could be Scott Boras? So Nats are leaking $12M, Boras is dismissing that figure as a “management” number. Boras should take his $12M and be happy with it given that the CBA is expiring soon. And I love that line about the Nats making so much money. Fucking Heyman. He’s such a Boras stooge.
I came to camdenchat and all I got was this lousy avatar.

sure, they may be making more money
but that doesn’t mean they should just give Harper more money as Heyman suggests. His market value is independent of the Nat’s revenue.
I came to camdenchat and all I got was this lousy avatar.
I pretty much read every Heyman article
as if it was ghost-written by Boras. When the Ryan Howard extension was announced and Jon Heyman was the only person in the media who liked it, i was shocked to find out that Howard wasn’t represented by Boras.
Haha
Of course, Boras would like the Ryan Howard extension regardless, since it sets a good precedent.
