Orioles Insider: Jones calls his own shot ... well, not exactly
"As he stood in the on-deck circle before his at-bat in the bottom of the fifth inning, Orioles' center fielder Adam Jones turned to some vocal fans seated behind him and asked them a simple question: "You want me to swing or bunt?," Jones said that he asked the fans. Anyone see the Draft last night?
I still can’t believe that all of UK’s starting 5 got drafted, that’s insane. A sophmore from Memphis from Memphis was also drafted, so that’s 6 guys Callipari recruited. Rather or not he’s recruited cleanly we don’t know, but he sure as hell knows how to get NBA talent to come to his program.

Stephen Drew
He could actually help us but we wouldn’t have been in this situation if we hadn’t traded him in the first place. Would be brilliant upgrade at SS and he is a consistent hitter so Andy if the Diamondbacks are actually interested make the deal.

I dont know
I guess it all depends on the price, if we’re trading young players for him then I would rather pass. Unless we get him on the cheap, which is doubtful.

especially not 27 year old shortstops who have succeeded at the major league level
And are under team control for 2 years after this. I could see some team near contention needing a SS trading for him, thats just not us.

besides britton
what players do you REALLY want to keep. SS is a major need and I think you need to make a deal (if not Drew) with someone to get a SS here for next year. I don’t want to see another 2008 at the SS position.
Most the young guys in the majors
And I would like to keep Bell and Britton. After that, i dont think there is anybody who could get the deal done. We may as well re-sign izzy this year.

Who do you think
I dont like the idea of trading a bunch of high-ceiling guys for him. We just dont have that many tradable pieces, and the people with value we want to keep (for good reason).
2 and a half years of an above average SS isn’t worth stripping our system that’s already pretty weak.

anybody
well in 3 years we have rosa/givens/and then machado.
And I am not saying just drew. The point is that SS is a major concern for me for the next 3 years.
I'm also slightly concerned about his home/road splits
There is talk of Arizona being the new Colorado in terms of it inflates a players performance, so it really depends on price.

Like who?
Our top prospects beyond AAA:
Britton
Hoes
Avery
Johnson
Hobgood
Drake
Givens
Berry
Jacobson
Cooney
Henry
Tolliver
Rosa
We’re not going to deal Hobgood or Hoes, and it is hard for me to see how the rest of that makes for a very appealing offer.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
well
then how do you get a SS on this team for the next 4+ years until machado is ready? Unless I am wrong – there are no FA SS next year. Thus a trade is the only way – right. So minor leaguers is what we have to trade with. So personally I am fine with trading for a SS with some of these guys. If there is no team that is willing to trade than I don’t know what to tell you.
Just resign Izzy for another 2 years then figure it out after that.
We already know what he gives us; stellar defense and nearly zero offense

We'll just have to get by
Maybe Greg Miclat can come in and provide something for us, or maybe we can get one for Wiggy or Millwood, but we’re basically boned. There are only a handful of quality shortstops out there, and we don’t have one, which is why we’ve made such an effort to stock our system at that position. Hopefully we can develop one from within who will be ready for the majors in the next few seasons. But you can’t rebuild a crap team overnight.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
not that I think you can rebuild
but SS is a glaring need in my eyes and I would hope that it would get addressed some how. Miclat came to mind but I don’t know much about him and he isn’t talked about too much so I just assumed he is someone that is to old for his league that hit his ceiling, etc, etc.
For me shortstop isnt anywhere near the top of the list
Corner infielders and relief pitching are much bigger needs. Izzy is fine at shortstop as long as he isnt surrounded by so much other crap in the lineup. You can deal with having one black hole in the lineup when he also brings top tier defense to the table. Its a lot tougher to accomodate when you have 2 or 3 other players hitting just as poorly that dont contribute in any other manner.
agreed 1b is our biggest hole
While 1B shouldnt automatically bat in the middle of the order, they should be easier to get offense from. Getting a 1B like James Loney adds 2 wins to this team easy, and probably more. Fixing that hole would be a lot cheaper too
"I have seen the future and his name is Matt Wieters." Keith Law
by Reddrummer9187 on Jun 25, 2010 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions
i agree 1B is a concern
But I think that can be solved easier than SS which is why I would hope a lot of effort is being put into that position. And if that takes trading some A or AA players I am for it.
by Philly O's on Jun 25, 2010 4:31 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions
The difference is a lot of people dont think SS is something that needs solving
A team can win with someone like Izturis at shortstop, as long as you dont surround him with people like b2b and garrett fucking atkins.
Miclat has had a very resurgent year
And was just promoted to Bowie, which for a 2008 draftee is pretty good.
I’ll be putting together a story on him soon.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Couldn't hit his way out of a wet paper bag last year
I honestly expected him to be released about August 1 last year. He was terrible hitting, hanging around .210 or so. Glad to see he’s improving.

Roberto Clemente and Steve Blass
According to Wikipedia: “In the 1971 World Series against the Baltimore Orioles, Blass pitched two complete game wins, allowing only seven hits and two runs in 18 innings. He finished second in the voting for World Series MVP behind teammate Roberto Clemente.”
The Os had a better team than the Pirates, but Blass and Clemente were hot. The year that fate raped us was 1969, when we were SO much better than the Mets.

Skipping over MacPhail isn’t the most positive thing to have happen. MacPhail has been taking plenty of heat, and this just adds to it. Lord knows what Angelos is now thinking. Plenty of comments on boards say ‘way to go Nick" and "it’s time this club got a leader". Problem is, the leadership isn’t just needed on the field. We’ll have to wait and see if the front office and management in general gets straightened out, or whether the O’s remain the same meandering mess they’ve been for years. We’ve seen this GM churn before. If the past is an indication of future performance, well, no need to state the obvious. Maybe the leopard has new spots now.

but Chad Jones, the football and baseball standout from LSU and NY Giants draft pick, was in a car accident early this morning in New Orleans. He may lose his leg and he is in “guarded” condition.. It’s not something i’d wish on anyone, but it really is a shame when someone with such potential has it taken away before he ever gets to use it. Best of luck, Chad.

Chad Jones Reportedly “Did Well” in Surgery, Will Likely Keep Both Legs
Chad Jones had surgery after a car accident on Friday morning and “did well”. Ross Brevosky, LSU’s baseball director of operations (Jones played baseball at LSU), said doctors think Jones will keep both of his legs.
He reportedly fractured one of his legs — and there were questions over whether doctors would have to amputate — but the news from Brevovsky appears to be good.

If we suppose that F’Atkins has a great game (say, 3-4 with a HR) tonight, what do you suppose the odds are that the Orioles declare “he’s fixed!” and then DFA someone else tomorrow instead?
Fire Garret Atkins.
If that happens

I guess Jake Fox could be the 5th outfielder along with a 3rd catcher
I just don’t understand why they keep pushing back the cutting loose of Atkins, though. He’s still marked for a DFA in that scenario (Lou getting DFAd instead) when Pie is healthy again. I guess both of them are functionally useless for the O’s at this point so maybe it doesn’t really make a difference.

logically it makes no difference. Neither of them ever play, nor do they ever deserve to play, and they’ll both be gone once Pie comes back (I assume, perhaps poorly, that it won’t be Scott Moore or Jake Fox getting the short bus to Norfolk). But I am sometimes not a logical creature.
Garret Atkins has THE WORST WAR IN THE AMERICAN LEAGUE. This is true even after he hasn’t played in umpteen-gabillion games. Him simply sitting on the bench, chewing sunflower seeds and struggling to stare off into nothingness is itself a blight and an embarrassment for me as a fan of the Baltimore Orioles, and I simply cannot endure this madness any longer.
If he survives the weekend – if he plays when I’m there on Saturday (for my first game back at the Yard all year) – I’m pretty sure my fucking head will explode.
Fire Garret Atkins.
Now they're saying
Lou hurt his oblique the “other day” and he’ll be DLed to make room for Bergesen and Goddamnit Fucking Atkins I Will End You will survive until Felix Pie shows up, at which point some other injury will no doubt be faked in order to save his stupid ass-bacon one more time.
I hate you, Andy MacPhail! Do you hear me!? I HATE YOU FOR DOING THIS TO ME!
I’m going to go punch something.
Fire Garret Atkins.
Hurt his oblique reaching for the bubble gum bucket on the bench???

Why not Dempsey
There is a tendency to undervalue people in our own organization in selecting a manager. Dempsey is a good guy and he played in the major leagues for over 20 years. He was a catcher and knows baseball. Why would he not be a good manager? Why would Showalter or Wedge be better? I am not trying to pick a fight, but merely to get opinions.
Because he's a total fucking moron.
He most definitely DOES NOT know baseball.

Well, there is that.

He knows how baseball used to be played
His commentary has proved repeatedly has no idea how to win now.
i dont really buy this thing about him not knowing baseball because of his post-game commentary
im pretty sure anyone who works for a local TV affiliate has to dumb down the analysis. Bobby V and Showalter, I would imagine, are given more opportunity to go in-depth in their positions. The dude basically gets about 10 sentences a night to explain why we suck. Of course he’s going to sound like a simpleton.
Although I did hear a soundbite from his interview he did with Ed Norris ( presumably done to show that he knows more about baseball than he lets on during MASN broadcasts) and it was utterly stupid. Something about how the first thing he woulld do is get together with the players and get them to start learning how to WIN.
Its not that his analysis is simple, its that its wrong.
He constantly advocates outdated positions that would harm the teams performance.
He is a fucking moron. There's no other way to describe him.
If you want to have a manager who’s a fucking moron, then by all means bring him in.
