Saturday Bird Droppings
Recaps of last night's win (like you need to read anything besides Stacey's wonderful wrap-up below) can be found at orioles.com, baltimoresun.com, The Associated Press, and WaPo.
Orioles Insider: Comments, thoughts from O's wild 7-6 victory over Nats
"We had 10 different ways to win that game, and we lost it 10 different ways," said Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond who was responsible for two of the four errors and now has 18 miscues on the season. Now you know how O's fans feel. -duck
Biggest comeback of the year - MASNsports.com
Say did you know last night was the biggest comeback of the year for the Orioles? What's that? It's in the headline? Wow, I really have to start reading these things instead of just copying and pasting. -duck
Is Markakis taking a bigger leadership role? - MASNsports.com
"Yeah, I'd say being the guy that signed a six-year deal and has come up through the organization, it's the right place and time to make that big step and get things going. We have to look for the future of this organization. We owe it to the players and the fans." -duck
1970 Orioles gather for reunion - baltimoresun.com
"Seeing us out there might be good for the current players," said Dick Hall, 79, a former long reliever. "They'll see us and think, 'These guys look like normal people. If they could do it, why can't we?'" Why not, indeed. -duck
Baltimore Sun Orioles notebook: Montanez moves to DL to make room for Bergesen
"Needing to make a corresponding move with the imminent promotion of Brad Bergesen from Triple-A for Saturday's start, the Orioles will place seldom-used outfielder Luis Montanez on the 15-day-disabled list with a left oblique injury, a decision that saves first baseman Garrett Atkins' roster spot at least for the time being." You can't avoid the Grim Reaper of the DFA wire much longer, Mr. Atkins. -duck
Twitter / Brittany Ghiroli: Atkins told me being released ...
"Atkins told me being released from the #Orioles would be "a welcome opportunity" and wouldn't look at it as a bad thing." Well, now you're just taunting us, Garrett. -duck
Wigginton gets day off to rest sore back | orioles.com: News
"Ty Wigginton was out of the Orioles' starting lineup on Friday for just the second time since April 13, and is day-to-day with minor back stiffness." He doesn't expect to be out long. -duck
With few alternatives, Pedroia's injury looms large - WEEI | Alex Speier
Dustin Pedroia injured and possibly broke his foot last night, and Alex Speier names Ty Wigginton as a possible trade target. But with the O's looking for a shortstop prospect in return, the Red Sox only option would be to give them Jose Iglesias, currently in AA. Probably not gonna happen. -Stacey

Cubs suspend Zambrano indefinitely after tirade - Chicago Breaking Sports
Carlos Zambrano went insane, again, in the dugout, and the Cubs have suspended him indefinitely. -duck
Arizona Diamondbacks' Edwin Jackson no-hits Tampa Bay Rays
"After the television cameras had left, upon wiping the celebratory shaving-cream pie off his head and changing his beer-soaked shirt, Edwin Jackson sat alone and it still hadn't sunk in. "I can't believe I just threw a no-hitter," he said." -duck
IN THE MINORS
Orioles Insider: Minor league game recaps - June 25
Brandon Erbe went on the DL with shoulder soreness, Norfolk lost, Bowie won, Frederick won as Felix Pie was 1-for-3 while scoring a run, Delmarva lost, Aberdeen lost, Bluefield lost and the GCL Orioles won as Mike Gonzalez pitched a scoreless inning. -duck
And that will do it for me until Thursday. Treat Stacey and zk nicely while I'm gone, OK?

We might as well make Markakis the head coach while he's at it

It's no hitter, it doesn't happen every day.

jackson's no-no...
maybe we shoudl find out if he was on acid? have to qiestiont he judgment of the manager leaving a guy out there who’s already been having a not great year for 149 pitches.

Do they even still make acid?
I kinda thought acid had gone the way of mescaline and black beauties.

yeah...
of course. the reunion of phish, i’d imagine, has kept industrious chemists in the black.

It was hard to find in the 2000's
Because of Phish being gone, Grateful Dead being gone, and Harvard chemist getting busted.
The col thing about acid is that just one person could make the whole world’s supply.

It's what Wikipedia says. And you can find articles, I remember one entitled "Where has all the acid gone?"
I had to do a report on it in a homeland security class. There was a huge increase in mushroom use to make up for the fact.
My boss at work is going to All-Good, and I have some friends going for their second time. I don’t think I’m crazy enough to go to one of those things.

We don’t need to trade Wiggy necessarily for a SS. We have many needs, and Izzie is an acceptable SS. How about a prospect at 1B, 2B, or 3B?
I agree, but...
…the thing is, if the Red Sox want to deal one of their better prospects for a second baseman, they can do so much better than Wiggy it is silly to even think about.
If they make a deal, it will probably be where they deal one of their two top 1b prospects – Anderson or Rizzo. And we should be thrilled to get either. But that’s easily enough to get either Kelly Johnson or Ryan Theriot, either of whom are better 2b options than Wiggy.

Theriot better than Wiggy?
Presumably he’s a much better defender, but I’m not sure its that better to make up for the difference in hitting. On the other hand, he does have the advantage of being named The Riot.
I'd prefer him
Theriot has averaged 2 wins above replacement over the last four years; Wiggy has averaged one and is two years older.

I also didnt take into account the stolen bases when looking at it
I’d like to see an adjusted OPS that awards an extra base for successful steal attempts and subtracts one for pickoffs and unsuccessful attempts.
He'd also be valuable insurance for Scutaro
With how the Red Sox go through shortstops, I’d think about that.

Apparently not.
Since Moore hadn’t actually entered the game at 1B yet, he was just a PH.
I guess that makes sense since there’s technically no way to divine what position he was going to enter the game – or indeed whether he would remain in the game beyond PH. So our stat that’s part fluke and part suckitude continues to roll on.

Hey Stacey (or anyone else that was there)
What would you estimate the O’s fan/Nats’ fan split was last night. Looked like good attendance.
Mostly O's fans I think
70-30 O’s fans, maybe 65-35 at worst.
If you looked at the crowd there wasn’t much red at all, but they got decent cheers when they did something good. It’s hard to tell because Nats fans are pretty reserved while Orioles fans are angry and therefore usually making noise of some sort.
In the 8th and 9th innings the Nats fans had no presence at all.
It was also union night and fireworks night which bring in big crowds. It was the largest since Opening Day.
Isn't it almost impossible to believe that none of the perfect games this season have been thrown against us? -O'sFan21
