Thursday Bird Droppings
In case you were paying no attention to anything last night, there were two big baseball events. The first was Ken Griffey, Jr.'s announcement that he is retiring. It was only a matter of time as the Kid had become an old, broken down man. Even though watching Griffey over the past few years was sad, I'm also sad to see him go. I was ten years old when Griffey debuted so I've really never known baseball without him. Check out MLB.com's story on his retirement, it has a lot of good video of the Kid in his glory days.
The other story of last night was of course the blown call by Jim Joyce to take away Armando Galarraga's perfect game. If you haven't heard it yet, here is audio of Joyce's post game interview. Hard not to feel bad for the guy. Galarraga called into Baseball Tonight and was just as gracious as could be about Joyce's mistake, saying sincerely, "Nobody is perfect." Really just a sad story all around. And because I never pass up an opportunity to link to Joe Posnanski, here are his thoughts on the game.
As for goings on in our organization, let's focus on the minors, shall we? Because the Orioles are depressing as hell.
The Shorebirds won 8-3 over the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Keys won 3-2 on Billy Rowell's walk off RBI single, the Baysox won 8-5 with help from Tyler Henson, who hit a double and a home run, and the Tides lost 5-4 behind Troy Patton.

That's funny
Along the same lines though, I feel the O’s need to be put on a Handicapping system like golf. If, say the MFY or Rays are considered as a baseline, or zero, the O’s should be given a Handicap of +5. This way, each time the O’s score it would count as 5 runs. Each time the they score it counts as 1 run. +5 might be wishful thinking for this team right now though. We still would lose more than we win.

Side note...
The schedule posted on the right side is still showing May. Can someone update that to June so I can see which teams will have the pleasure of embarrassing the O’s this month.

Good point
although the rest of my day is packed. not sure I’ll get to it until after 8:30 pm tonight.
When you watch the Orioles every night, a beer after dinner turns into a six pack WAY too many times. Stacey
Avery
You gotta love the line he’s putting up in A+ ball at 20 years old considering how “raw” he is. He’s still striking out a ton though, so hopefully he’ll start to learn how to recognize breaking balls and that’ll drop. I still expect huge inconsistencies but i’m encouraged by him and Hoes down at A+ so far

I do like it...
…but he’s getting caught stealing way too much for anyone, much less a guy with his speed.
He’s young and he’ll learn. But still.

I'm not worried about his caught stealings
Crawford’s first season in AA he stole 36 and was caught 20 times. Its the minor leagues, as far as i’m concerned he should try stealing almost every time he’s on base just to learn.
That being said, he should be expected to improve in that area.

Would you rather have...
21st perfect game in Major league history…
or..
Be the First player in major league history to have an umpire apologize to you?
"Ohhh it's baad" - E. Smith
I've been thinking about it
And he can now claim to have pitched > a perfect 9 innings since he was forced to make 28 outs.
MLB should take the ball and put it in the HOF anyways and have both him and the umpire sign it. May as well embrace it, everybody wins here, he gets into the HOF and the umpire gets to feel slightly better as the achievement is still recognized. It would be worth mentioning that the umpire has been one of the better umpires for a long time too.

You want to know something crazy?
Markakis is tied for the AL lead in intentional walks.
I don’t blame opposing managers at all. But it is crazy that a player on the worst team in baseball is the league leader in intentional walks.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
cuz everybody knows all they have to do is walk markakis
and nobody else in the lineup can hit. except lou of course.

Well, that and...
he’d probably just end up walking anyway. Might as well do it on 4 softt toss pitches then have to make 6 or 7 high intensity ones.

that...
was an interesting way of dealing it.

i wonder if it is the shoulder/shin/scared/just doesn't have it
and i dont think the bullpen is for him…maybe a trade?
I think he might be able to get it back,
because the biggest struggle he’s having — lots of walks — is inconsistent with what he’s done his whole pro career up until now. I really hope he does figure it out, but I’m not as optimistic as I was after his first start or two following the AAA stint.

he’s just reverting to the norm now. That being said, I’d still take him over Gonzo in a sec…

agreed
he’s blown his last three saves. hasn’t looked even remotely good in any of the three.

today's blown save should be on Guzman
or on the Nats front office for not having an actual right fielder

This is the beginning of the end. Losting 3 in a row to the Astros??? Bye bye .500.
Shitty team falling back to earth.

if capps could pitch, they'd have won all three
came back from down 5-0 in the first game only to see capps give up 2 runs in 9th. took the lead into the 9th again in game three only to watch capps blow it again. they didn’t play shitty at all in any of the games. stammen didnt have a good start in game one, but he’s either going to the pen or AAA next week when strasburg returns. they need to give storen a shot to close tho.
