Recaps of last night's loss (I have a keyboard shortcut for that now) can be found at orioles.com, baltimoresun.com, and MASNsports.com.
Guthrie wasn't 100 percent - MASNsports.com
It wasn't just a burned-out husk of a bullpen that led the O's to pull Jake Arrieta from his start Saturday - Jeremy Guthrie told the staff before the game he felt sore. Nothing specific, just sore. So, of course, when Guthire went into the 7th, the O's used Arrieta in his Norfolk game anyway, and then the Daily Parade of Relievers started after Guthrie departed the game, and we probably still need an extra arm in the bullpen today anyway, and Arrieta is now probably not available. This team can't get out of its own way. -duck
Handed a chance for the win, the O's politely refused - MASNsports.com
Boston did their best to give away that game last night, but like a big department store, the Orioles weren't taking it back. Not without a receipt. -duck
Baltimore Sun Orioles notebook: Bergesen moved to bullpen
Brad Bergesen will have his next start skipped with Monday's off day, so he's getting moved to the bullpen indefinitely. Juan Samuel won't say how long the move will last. -duck
Samuel wants a stabilized, set lineup | orioles.com: News

Orioles' Samuel receives high marks - baltimoresun.com
"This is a really good fit for Sammy," said former Oriole Mickey Tettleton, who played with Samuel in Detroit in 1994. "He always carried himself in a leadership role. Sammy's players will work hard, like he did, and they will play the game right." I keep reading quotes like that, and then seeing Miguel Tejada jog to first base on a grounder. -duck

Orioles' issues run deeper than manager | orioles.com: News
"If the Orioles are going to at least start to turn the corner on a 15-40 start, there will need to be more changes than simply the nameplate above the skipper's office." Pretty accurate assessment. -duck
IN THE MINORS

Chirpin' with the Birds: Britton back on track - CCT

Doesn't matter
Doesn’t matter if Zack Britton can hold an opposing team to 2 runs over 7.1 IP. He’d still lose in Baltimore….
From the Schmuck article, "Do whatever you need to do with Garrett Atkins"
as in possibly plug the Gulf oil eruption with him? I’m okay with that.
Make the world a better place; punch a Yankee fan in the face!
I was thinking Dick Cheney was the logical candidate for that, but there's no reason he couldn't go on TOP of Atkins
Come to think of it, maybe Atkins was at the Secret Energy Policy Meeting, too, yelling Let’s drill ‘em up good, mother%$#&%s. We’ll never know, will we…
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Churchill,1942-- a rebuilding year.
Atkins would be the redundancy measure then. Just to ensure the plug is nice and tight.

Just have to repeat this
Last night in the fifth inning, with runners on first and second (i.e., with a runner already in scoring position), Juan Samuel directed B2B to bunt. With Cesar Izturis and Corey Patterson up next.
That’s right, with a RISP, and three guys in a row who hit below .240, Juan Samuel elected to give away an out to accomplish…..WHAT? I’M NOT REALLY SURE.
I guess he would argue that it was to give Cesar the opportunity to bring the runner in from third. Against John Lester, ‘Cause that’s so likely. I mean, if you’re going to move a runner to third for CESAR FUCKING IZTURIS, then you call a squeeze on the next play, because bunting is about the only thing Cesar can do.
There are a lot of different approaches to that situation—including pinch-hitting, although perhaps the 5th inning is too early for that—but bunting is about the last thing I’d expect with those two guys coming up.
Is it to early to start JSWTF as a feature?

Isn't it almost impossible to believe that none of the perfect games this season have been thrown against us? -O'sFan21
I was in a brewpub with my wife at that point
I explained to her that the O’s were the worst team in baseball and that they would prove it now by not scoring a single run. They didn’t even come close. The bases loaded later was even more pathetic.

we could start using this a magic trick or something
“hey frank….i’ll bet you a hundred bucks they don’t score here with the bases loaded”….“i’ll take that bet!!”
BAM…..one hundred bucks in the pocket.
I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck
I made that bet once
Bases loaded no outs, I bet they wouldn’t score. A DP grounder did score a run, followed by a weak K. I technically lost, but the guy didn’t take my money because he felt that was one of the most pathetic ways to score a run and quickly end a promising inning.

Well, here's a little good news for the day
The Douchey One is proving to be a bad investment for the Yankees this year:
.215 / .328 / .370 / .698

With an OPS of just under .700?
Fourth behind Nick, Wiggy and Luke. Seriously. He’d be our 4th best hitter.

The consensus is starting to be...
..that the Pirates are going to select Taillon, leaving the Orioles picking Machado or a mystery player.

Is that OK?
I kinda wouldn’t mind another big ol’ Texas HS kid pitcher. Because if we take a SS, you just know he’s gonna suck in 2 years. It’s our destiny.

At this point, I want Taillon...
….and I’m not in the least bit convinced that we even take Machado if Taillon isn’t available. I fear that Taillon to the Pirates puts all kinds of bad ideas like Matt Harvey into play.

Brutal
Maybe its all rumors, who knows. If we dont take Machado or Taillon and go with a Harvey, i’m not going to be pleased.

Arrieta on the late scratch
This is what Jake Arrieta had to say following last night’s scratch which he called one of the most bizarre nights he ever had…
“I was called in there an hour before gametime and they said, ’You’re not starting.’ They gave me the rundown of how the game was going to start out. They said if you pitch you’re going to come out of the pen, and that’s all the information they gave me. They didn’t say anything else. They’re just following orders from higher up. That’s all I knew, that’s all they knew.”
[was it frustrating?]
“With the lack of information you feel like there are a lot of unanswered questions, but I’m sure the answers will come in the future.”
“I think there’s a good reason why they did what they did, but it’s a reason I don’t know.”
Tides manager Bobby Dickerson said he got a call at about 6 p.m.
“I was told by the farm director to use my pitchers in that order,” he said. “That’s all I knew. All I was privy to was to scratch him from the start.”

So now that MacPahil is preaching patience...
Anyone else want Tillman back at Norfolk and Arrieta stay there until these guys are really ready? Last year was a crap team with the intention of letting the young guys develop.
Tillman looks like he still needs to work on the change up we’ve heard he was developing. I’m not sure he has much confidence in anything beyond the two pitches he showed in his last outing and the Red Sox ate him up by waiting for the fast ball.
Bring back some schlubs like Eaton and announce the season a waste. Don’t rush anyone else. We see what the pressure is doing to Wieters, Jones, Reimold. The team is shit. Now that MacPhail is admitting it, why rush any more young guys up to participate?
Wait, I just had A BRILLIANT IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! C R O W for M A N A G E R!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Today it’s the end of the Maui Wowie bag: a lot of sticks, stems and seeds, but the latter actually give a a pretty terrific rush if you can get past the bitterness-in-the-throat thing.
