Allow me to kick off the discussion this morning by stating a simple opinion: Apparently Sarasota is home to some of the most annoying human beings on the face of the earth. I can’t believe this story won’t die.

It's not just Sarasota
A lot of places in Florida are full of old people with nothing to do, so they turn to rabble-rousing and complaining. I’ve personally dealt with some certifiable lunatics in Naples, and there’s nothing you can do to placate them, facts be damned, once they’ve made up their minds to fight something.
You know what
was kind of confusing, disturbing, and definitely insulting? The way Bobby V treated the Orioles. Go cry into your goddamnned cornflakes, Valentine.

Thats more concerning for me
Dont take this as i dont care about walks, because I do very much so. But I never expected him to walk much. Players with his ability can be successful while not walking if they play good defense and swing at good pitches. See Torii Hunter. All I ask is that he swings at good pitches, which he did for sure in June. Eventually as he ages you would expect him to start walking a little bit more as he develop’s old player skills with experience. If that happens I’ll be perfectly content with few walks a year. Good defense, power and a tolerable OBP has plenty of value.
However if he doesnt have good defense in CF then his long term value is limited. But June’s been an encouraging month to say the least.

by Reddrummer9187 on Jul 1, 2010 10:50 AM EDT up reply actions
Not that I'm going to argue
because I am also quite concerned with his defensive game (so many singles played into triples). But Torii Hunter has a career 7.1% walk rate. Adam Jones is nowhere near that this year or this month – he’s at 2.8 on the year, 4.9 on his career, and 3.8 in June. It’s a big, big problem.
Fire Julio Lugo.
I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?
eh
I try not to look too far into numbers. The difference between a 5% walk rate and a 7% is negligible if he is swinging at good pitches.

Beyond the Box Score on the O's:
Wieters’s defense according to that BtB study is much better now; there was an error in the guy’s spreadsheet before. With the fix, he’s rated the third-best defensive catcher in the majors overall (though it’s a total runs saved stat rather than a rate stat), and is tied for second-best in blocking pitches, but is only a little above average in catching basestealers. That makes a lot more sense to me, and it’s worth noting that most of the bases I’ve seen stolen while Wieters has been catching were really the pitcher’s fault for not keeping an eye on the runner. Of course, just because I like the results now doesn’t mean small sample size caveats no longer apply.
Also, there’s an article on the 2013 Orioles. I’ve only skimmed it so far, but it’s basically what the roster could look like if we stay entirely in-house.

From Keith Law's chat today:
Raymond (Baltimore): Klaw, I’m never a fan of tanking, per se. And with a young team, I think there is a value in winning, and learning to do such. But I was actually getting excited about Rendon, and I think Josh Bell moves of of 3B in the future anyway. But with the way the O’s (and Pirates) have been playing, they might even screw up the number 1 pick now. If you were a betting man, who ends up with the worse record, and is Rendon on a level of his own right now for 2011?
Klaw (1:29 PM): The second pick in next year’s draft will mean a choice of, say, Cole, Gray, Hultzen, the outfielders I wrote up today, Bradley … and that’s just the college class, not counting HS guys like Delmonico, Owens, Starling, Norris. Really, if the O’s finish second and miss Rendon, the consolation prize will be a good one.
Bob (Tinley Park, IL): Please tell O’s fans not to worry about Matt Wieters.
Klaw (1:31 PM): O’s fans: Don’t worry about Matt Wieters. If he was the only Oriole struggling, I’d be more concerned, but there seems to be an org-wide issue with young players scuffling the minute they hit the big leagues. That’s part of why I was fine with them canning Trembley: Player development is a major part of the job of a manager and his coaching staff for a sub-500 team.

Minor league ABs
Stacey, Apparently, both Eddie Murray and Cal Ripken had 1,000 ABs in the minors before joining the big club. Granted, both were HS rather than college signings, but, still, their experience shows the value of minor league seasoning. Wieters had only 300 or so ABs.

Wieters had close to 600. What in his 1014 OPS in the minors made it look like he needed more time? Also he put up league average numbers last year. Why leave a player in AAA when he’s killing it?

Draft picks
I want the first pick in the draft. I want the guy everyone wants. If we have the 3rd or 4th pick, they might go out on a tangent and pick someone completely unexciting like Hobgood.
Not in a year like this
The Hobgood pick was in a year with a lot of parody after the top two. This year there was parody after the consensus top three but with pick 3 we were safely in those three. Next year there are enough top 5 picks not named Rendon. Its a deep draft class.
