Orioles place Luke Scott on DL; Josh Bell called up from Norfolk(!)
Via Orioles Press Release:
The Orioles today announced that they have placed OF/DH LUKE SCOTT on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain. Scott was injured running the bases after hitting a home run in the 7th inning of last night’s win over the Oakland A’s. The club has recalled 3B JOSH BELL from Triple-A Norfolk to take Scott’s place on the roster. Bell will be making his major league debut.
Scott has batted .274 (61-223) with 12 home runs and 30 RBI in 66 games for the Orioles this season. He ranks 13th in the American League in slugging percentage (.520) and is 20th in on-base plus slugging (.868). Scott has hit .326 over his last 42 games since May 8 to raise his average from .177 to .274.
Bell batted .266 (76-286) with 24 doubles, 10 home runs and 44 RBI in 74 games for the Tides. In 24 games in June, he hit .272 (25-92) with nine doubles, four home runs, 19 RBI and a .500 slugging percentage. Bell’s 24 doubles are second-most in the International League and tied for 12th-most in all of minor league baseball. He is tied for 10th in the IL in home runs.
A fourth-round selection by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2005 First Year Player Draft, Bell was acquired by the Orioles along with RHP STEVE JOHNSON in exchange for LHP GEORGE SHERRILL on July 30, 2009.
Bell will wear uniform #25.
Um, what?

no one is saying he’s going to sit in the majors for the rest of the year.
if you know he’s going to come up at some point this year, now is a perfect time do do it. you have a built-in reason to send him back to AAA in two weeks that doesn’t get him stressed out.

He’s a temp solution. He’s playing just fine in the minors to be called up as a temp.
And yes, I believe certain players do not need a full season in the AAA.

His June stats
You cannot seriously be trying to persuade any of us based on his stat line from June.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
i think the only thing that his june stats speak to is how he is playing NOW. it’s not something that should be used to forecast anything long term or should be used to judge him as a player OVERALL
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
They tell us nothing about how he is likely to play today, or tomorrow
Hot streaks, by and large, are simply myths. Almost all of the variation from month to month in a player’s performance is randomness – one way or another, monthly stats are simply variation away from the mean. A player who went 5-5 today is just as likely to go hitless the next as they are to continue to play well. If I flip a coin ten times, and it comes up heads each time, is it more likely to come up heads on the eleventh try?
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
They tell us nothing about how he is likely to play today, or tomorrow
I wouldn’t say NOTHING. It’s always hard to predict how someone will play on any particular day. In fact, it’s pretty impossible. But if you want to know how someone will play in the short term, the most recent data is the most reliable.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
The data I trust has been constant his whole season
Bell has struck out in nearly 25% of his plate appearances every month this year. I’d say we’re lucky if he manages to strike out only one third of his at bats in Baltimore.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
ok fine...
I acknowledge there are red flags in his stats… like i’ve already said, he’s playing well NOW, so I don’t see why it’s horrible idea to bring him up for a few games… I never said he would lit it up in BAL, not sure why what I said so controversial.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Well, it isn't a horrible idea to bring him up for a few games, as I said downthread
It is a horrible idea to bring him up for a few games because Luke got hurt and Pie needs a few days and “what the hell, right?” And that he hit well in the random period of time we know as “June” isn’t evidence to the contrary at all.

Fine. I can see that point of view.
nd that he hit well in the random period of time we know as "June" isn’t evidence to the contrary at all.
Fine, I was just saying if you’re going to bring up someone on a temp basis, might as well bring up someone who’s playing well.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
I'd dispute that .832 at AAA for his position is "playing well"
He’s playing better, but i dont think he’s near ready
i don't think he's ready either!
but ok, playing well might be too strong although the Tides’ park is a pitchers park from what I hear. his recent performance is fine then.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
his park and luck-adjusted numbers
are actually much better than that, but still
that's not entirely true,
players can make tweaks in their swing and then lose that feel, which would cause the peaks/valleys, but for the most part, I agree with you
let me ask you this
what’s the point of bringing up Bell for three days to sit on the bench or DH until Pie’s ready? This kid is an actual prospect – one which still has a ton of issues to work out, mind you, and here the Orioles are, jerking him around, bringing him up when he isn’t ready yet.
I mean, yes, his June has been solid – but is one month of games (and not dominating games, but good games) really enough to justify this? It just screams to me of unnecessary risk, especially when you know they aren’t going to sit Tejada to play Bell.

He should play everyday, but man, it’s not huge deal. If plays 1 or 2 games in BAL in then gets sent down, it’s not going to ruin his development. It burns an option but that probably was going to happen anyways.

I hate wasting player’s options. And bringing him up for 3 days is most definitely wasting his option.

is that Bell would probably be up sometime this year anyway (and hes right)…Im not concerned about the option.

an option only gets used once per year
So they can send him down and call him up as many times as they want in 2010 and it only uses the one option.

I doubt he feels "jerked around"
I’m sure he feels thrilled at the prospect. The level of micromanaging going on around here is getting insane.
They planned to bring up Bell at some point this year. So that was going to be an option gone. Doesn’t really matter when it happens, unless you’re worried about service time, which is probably irrelevant in this case.
He gets a reward for his hard work. He knows it’s only a few days. It gives him confidence and a pat on the back and motivation all at the same time. I actually think it’s quite smart because he knows he’ll go back down when Pie comes back. Or maybe they’ll release Lou and keep Bell because they have a trade for Miggi in the works.
Whatever the answer, they clearly think Pie isn’t quite ready to come back (as they said all over the place yesterday), and this is a perfectly reasonable roster move. It strains credulilty to somehow suggest this is going to somehow destroy Bell’s development.

Wasn't there also some questions as to whether or not he should continue batting from both sides of the plate given how awful is splits are against lefties?
It probably seems like he should figure that out before getting sustained playing time in the majors.
But I like that he is going to get an idea of what major-league pitching is like. Might give him a better idea as to what he needs to work on. I dont know..

I've always said that one of the best ways to build a winner is to emulate another legendary success story, you know, like the Cubs. -- Dan Connolly
that whole theory is absurd
he’s actually far more likely to suck even worse against lefties if he hits them left handed. He’s spent how many years watching all breaking balls come towards him, he’s not suddenly going to be able to deal with breaking balls away.
My dad was a switch hitter until his college coach made him hit everything right-handed. He could never figure out right-handed pitchers breaking stuff.
You don't think it'll ever happen?
Re: this quote from the article
Every day that goes by without the Orioles ending the switch hitting experiment is another day of development that Josh Bell will require in the minor leagues while he learns to face left handed pitching. In fact, it would not surprise me if some of Bell’s struggles this spring are due in part to an increased focus on his right handed hitting. It’s time to see what Bell can do by focusing full-time on hitting left handed. Maybe then we really will have our third baseman of the future.
I think the difference is that Bell is a professional prospect, and your father was a college player. Not to knock on your Dad, but there’s a difference in expectations and commitment there.

fine, forget i mentioned my dad
it still isn’t gonna happen. The risk/reward isn’t worth it at this stage.
I'm missing something here
Are you saying he won’t ever figure out lefties, or that he needs time in the minors to work on that, because I’m with you if it’s the second one.
I've always said that one of the best ways to build a winner is to emulate another legendary success story, you know, like the Cubs. -- Dan Connolly
I'm saying there's no guarantee he'll figure out lefties
as a left-handed hitter. There’s also a pretty good chance that he worse at hitting them as a left-handed hitter. He’s a big prospect that crushes righties and has a platoon split, the platoon split is not enough of a problem to send him back to the low-minors and hope he can hit lefties as a left-handed hitter better.
i think they should just kill two birds with one stone
and have him face lefties as a left-handed hitter during this upcoming series. throw him in the really deep end.

First of all
I didn’t write the post, it was a guest post.
His struggles against lefties are clear. The guest poster is simply suggesting that the Orioles see how Bell hits lefties batting left handed. How do they know he’s going to be worse/or better that way? If he’s worse switch him back, if he’s better, great!

like i said, i wasn't hating
i just don’t think it would work, i should of backed off the absurd thing
here's the thing
That would have to be at least a season-long commitment. It would take him the better part of a year to be able to figure that out, and also for there to be a large enough sample size that we know it isn’t a fluke. Then, if it doesn’t work, you can’t just switch him back and expect him to be fine again, it would take a while after he goes back to switch hitting for him to get his right-handed swing back.
Also, do you realize how many left-handed hitters struggle greatly against lefty-pitchers? That’s why lefties are always in such huge demand. I just don’t see it working out, he will most likely just have to be platooned a little in the late innings of games.
This was the guy who lots of people had in magic marker for a June/July callup
I just think its funny to watch people’s reactions.
Winter/Spring: Bell is going to be starting by July! He’ll fight Matusz for ROY!
April/May: Bell sucks! We want Sherrill back!
June: Bell is awesome! DFA Atkins and bring him up
July: Why are you bringing Bell up?!??!?
I’m not singling anyone out here.

But he started crushing the ball then.
I assume you’re talking about the first part, we all wanted Outkins gone after April.

June OPS = .685

vs. Bell's .840
I knew he was hitting better, but I didn’t know his OBP was so respectable this month.
That K:BB ratio is still atrocious.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
Well, he's away from the team dealing with family issues
Doubt that’s the circumstance for him to jump back to the bigs and do well.

We've officially lost the initiative
This move might not be a big deal. The scouting department might really believe Bell is ready, and might be right. They might have been planning this because they have a deal close for Miggi. This might just be to check Bell out against major league pitchers to indentify things to work on back in Norfolk, things they can’t see against AAA pitching.
But, like with the Matusz promotion last season, it is clear that this was dictated not by an internal plan, not by its own merits, but based on factors that are, ultimately, irrelevant – the needs of a major league team that is the worst in baseball and will not be moving out of the cellar anytime soon. I am incapable of believing that this is by design of our front office. Instead of dictating what we do next based on strategy, we’re on our heels.
And that situation will always be a losing one. So long as that persists, I see nothing but failure on the horizon. However this move turns out concerns me infinitely less than what it tells me about the people in charge.

This is a tough question
The thing is, we’re carrying an extra pitcher right now – we replaced Lou with Koji. And we were supposed to lose a pitcher when we brought up Pie.
So, with Luke gone, when Pie comes back, we will theoretically be dropping a pitcher, not Bell.

Not that this actually makes the timing any better since it means they only spent hours thinking about it, but the timeline’s still different
OK
I dunno. Whatever. I am just going to stop thinking about this. Sometimes, it is very hard for me to not hate this team and to want it to fail, because it deserves to fail, and if it doesn’t it will simply make these morons think that they did things the right way rather than waking them up.

so they told bell last night
Before or after they called Felix last night and told him if Scott goes on the DL he’ll he activated? Felix was moving his shit back into the clubhouse.

Fucking Samuel
“He’s only going to be here, hopefully, for a short period of time,” interim manager Juan Samuel said.
Samuel added with a smile that Bell could go 4-for-4 and change those plans.
“He’s going to get a little taste and see what the big leagues are all about,” Samuel said.
Yeah, let’s make sure he gets a taste of being on a team that is vying to be one of the worst in the history of baseball. We wouldn’t want him not to know what the big leagues are all about".

yeah...
i think samuel does LESS damage as manager than 3b coach. i think he was WAY too aggressive in sending guys and threw a bunch of dudes under the bus. i think trembles was a big time enabler of the aggression, but y’know…so much easier to dislike the juan.

Agreed on that
I def. hated him more when he was the 3B coach. He’s still a shit manager though.

I'm confused.
Something like this is a MacPhail decision, what do you want Samuel to say?
This is Bell's sixth professional season
… so he’s hardly being ‘rushed,’ and probably won’t be overwhelmed by the experience. The fact the team is bad means the expectations on him are lessened. And, if he’s been playing well lately, the Orioles are rewarding him since an opportunity presented itself.
He is 23, will be 24 in November, and since he’s from Florida he’s been been playing year-round his entire life, which has been spent getting ready for this, so he has plenty of seasoning. From the numbers I see, he does strike out a lot, but has had more hits than strikeouts at each level except High-A.
Baltimore used his option for the year when it sent him out in the spring, so those objections are unfounded.
Baltimore used his option for the year when it sent him out in the spring, so those objections are unfounded.
Did they? I think you might be right since he was on the 40 man roster…
And the whole being rushed stuff is just way overblown since he’ll be sent back to minors very soon anyways.

Imagine how the Dodgers feel right now
Sherrill has been absolutely awful, and L.A. won’t have Bell to replace Casey Blake at 3B next season. Plus the Dodgers traded catcher Carlos Santana, also 23 years old, to get Blake two years ago. Yeah, getting to the playoffs is great and the ultimate goal, but sometimes the price is a bit exorbitant.
this,
and by the way, i know most people havn’t noticed because of Strasburg, but Santana is absolutely raking right now. He’s 24, not 23 though.
He's been pretty beast
and pretty sweet fantasy wise as well.

When you neutralize for park/luck, those numbers start to look quite a bit better
He’s facing a righty tonight, so let’s see what he can do.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
yeah, once you neutralize luck, his OPS jumps to .844.
His MLE is terrible though (.682 OPS).
