IN THE MINORS
The Norfolk Tides were off as the Intentional International League takes its All-Star Break, Bowie lost 10-5 as Trenton scored seven runs in the ninth inning as Bob McCrory and Pedro Beato were spectacularly ineffective, Frederick won 4-0 to finish a three-game sweep of the Potomac Nationals, Delmarva won 3-2 despite giving up two runs in the bottom of the ninth, Aberdeen won 8-2 scoring eight runs in the first three innings than cruising, Bluefield was postponed and The GCL Orioles won with help from Brian Roberts as he went 3-for-3 in the 5-1 win. -duck

MacPhail's putting on so much spin,
if he were pitching, that’s a curve bouncing ten feet in front of home plate.
I get that there are diminishing returns as you add more scouts, but… Tampa Bay, Boston, and New York each have 50-63 scouts. So Toronto may be overdoing it by having twice as many scouts as we do… but are the three contending teams all overdoing it by having 50% more?

Agree
His responses really bug me. The other teams are reacting to Tampa Bay competitively, making damn sure they’re not being out-worked. Is that a problem? Given we want to develop rather than buy talent, shouldn’t we be making sure of the same thing?
Take the comparative numbers out of it. The baseball world is enormous now. You’re going to cover it with 36 people? Just doesnt’ sound valid on it’s face. The low number of international staff jumped out at me especially.

BRob
Should we be in a hurry to see him back at this point, after all those health ups and downs? It seems like it will be 8/1 before we could declare him actually healthy. Then he needs to train from a point of being healthy, since he never had Spring Training at all. I’d rather Brian comes back totally fit in September and finishes well, than take any risk that he continues his bungee ride.

Yeah, I lean towards this myself.
Sure, I miss having him in the lineup. But we still owe him, what, $30 million for 2011-2013? I’d rather him miss the rest of this year and take time to get healthy for those three.

He’s getting his spring training in right now – that’s why it’s going to be another 3 weeks until he joins the club (if all goes well). His live action in minor league games IS effectively his spring training. He’s obviously already been declared “healthy” or he wouldn’t be playing live games.

By healthy
I meant he had been in several weeks of live games and remained healthy. He was deemed healthy enough to play live Oriole games, but he clearly turned to have been quite unhealthy at the time.
I’d rather determine if all goes well, then let him continue to hone skills for several weeks then bring him back.

I guess
But I don’t see a problem with the current plan. He’s been declared healthy to play live games, so that’s what he’s doing. These games that he’s playing now are going to be the equivalent of his spring training and once he’s up to speed and confirmed to be fully healthy he’ll come back to the O’s. He’s estimating 3 weeks which seems pretty reasonable – most veterans don’t want to play more than a few weeks of games in spring training anyway.

not the Intentional League lol
so it's not called an International Walk?
Damn. All this time I thought it was a joke about how the French can’t pitch.

If you're hiring a permanent manager, why not do it on Thursday?
I don’t think I’ll ever understand this franchise. The All-Star break makes the perfect chance to do something like that. The Orioles even have an extra off day on the tail end before their games resume.
I guess we’ll wait a few days and see what happens.

I'm guessing he'll be getting ready to take over for the next few days
Maybe (hopefully) putting together his own staff.
But it probably would have made more sense to make the decision a few days ago and then be ready to go on Thursday/Friday. In the grand scheme of things, it probably doesn’t matter that much.

trent mummey almost hit for a cycle last night
3-4 2B, 3B, HR. Granted it’s in Aberdeen, but the issue most scouts had with him was hitting for power with a wooden bat, so thats good i guess.
Hey, you always want to see domination
in the lesser leagues. Mummey’s 21 – right at the league average age – he’s walking and hitting for power. So it’s nice – even if it’s only been two weeks. Heck, Billy Rowell can put up a solid two weeks. But you always want to see a .874 OPS from a center fielder.
Fire Julio Lugo.

yeah, and nothing wrong with the ~.200 ISO either
