The good thing about Tatum getting more playing time
Is that he’ll have more chances to hit a home run and thus allow me to finally utter the John Sterlingism I’ve been longing to use since he made the team. “A tater! From Tatum!”

I bet you really, really want it to be a grand slam.
Then you can say it’s a loaded tater.

LOL, I think we all wanted to rush to post this.
Westie had one that beat yours by like 90 seconds and I had a Fanshot lined up until I reloaded CC and saw that there were two posts about it already. Folks, do not let it be said that your CC staff isn’t on top of breaking O’s news!
On a non-meta level, this is a bummer. Wieters needs time to figure things out and now he won’t be able to get more looks at big league pitching. Tater’s fine as a backup but I think we’re going to wish we had someone with pop some time during this upcoming homestand. On the other hand, he’s not afraid to just watch four balls go by, so there’s that.
At The Sun’s Orioles Insider blog, Jeff Z. speculates that Josh Bell could return to the bigs as the corresponding roster move. That is also not good. It’s clear he might need to have a little more time in the minors, and if he comes back up here just to be the last guy on the bench that is silly.
IF/OF currently on the 40-man but not on the 25-man:
Josh Bell
Pedro Florimon Jr.
Rhyne Hughes
Brandon Snyder
Nolan Reimold
Well… I guess we don’t really want to see any of those guys right now.

But given the real thing, makes us look much more important ;)

what pisses me off
is that they all seem to know how bad the injury was and how long it takes to recover yet he was right there opening day. not sure how much that was reimold not saying how bad it was but they should have know this either way.
Hopefully Pie is doing ok
Has anyone heard an update?

His was supposed to be the less serious injury
Pretty sure Mark Viviano said the next day that they figured Pie would be fine after the All-Star Break but they weren’t sure right away about Wieters. I thought Wieters to the DL seemed likely after hearing that – but of course that doesn’t mean Pie got better as projected.
I think if he was still hurt they would have DLed him too, though. Hopefully he’s fine and in the starting lineup tomorrow.

How the fuck does this make sense?
The Orioles haven’t announced a corresponding move but it’s expected that they’ll start Craig Tatum at catcher, use Jake Fox as his primary backup and then call up a position player. Third baseman Josh Bell is one of the top candidates.
That’s from the Sun.
So, did Bell look good in his first stint with us? Look useful? No, not really. Did he get much playing time? Also no, not really. Does it make even the slightest bit of sense to have our top positional prospect sitting on a bench anywhere? No, not really.
Meanwhile, the argument that this helps us because we don’t have to clear a spot on the 40-man also makes no sense, because in the coming days, we’ll have to make room on the 40-man for Roberts and Gonzo anyways. One of those spots almost certainly will come from Mata, who should be the odd man out when we add Gonzalez to the major league bullpen. So why not either DFA Pedro Viola or even better, put Jim Johnson on the 60-day DL (he’s been out since May 28th, so unless he’s going to be back before the 28th of July, it is a costless move) now and bring up someone besides Bell? The Johnson to the 60-day argument is ideal, really, because by then we can expect to have cleared a 40-man spot anyways due to the trading deadline.
The logic behind this potential move truly eludes me. Anyone want to explain why I’m wrong?

One might hope that Roberts' return = Lugo DFA'd.
I feel like we probably aren’t that lucky, though.
I definitely agree with the notion that we should do a little 40-man finagling to bring up someone else rather than Bell again. Or give Rhyne Hughes another look. I don’t really care. Bell sitting on the bench is a bad idea and there has to be some 40-man dead weight to cut loose. Then bring up a guy who we don’t really care if he’ll sit and do not much in real games for ten days.

If we aren't going to bring up Hughes again at some point...
…why does he still have a spot on the 40-man?

You got me.
I really wonder if other teams fans feel baffled by roster moves during the course of a given season as much as we do. It’s tempting to say that the Orioles are leaders of this but I feel like that’s probably observation bias.
If I was a fan of another team and followed their roster moves closely for a whole year it’d probably end up just as bizarre… unless nobody ever gets injured, in which case more power to them. On the other hand, look at a team like the Red Sox with a ton of injuries this year and somehow even when they call up scrubs they aren’t just scrubs, so who the hell knows.

There was a really nice feature late last night...
….at MLBTR by Ben Nicholson-Smith (who I think is really a rising star) on Daniel Nava and teams which scout the Indy Leagues (which, unsurprisingly, doesn’t include the Orioles but does include many of our competitors).
That said, Darnell McDonald is a scrub. Like Scorey, you can be a scrub and yet have a respectable run in the majors for a while. Nick Green was a scrub last season and the Red Sox proved it by giving him enough time to fall to earth.

Josh Bell
Pedro Florimon Jr.
Rhyne Hughes
Brandon Snyder
Nolan Reimold
Here are the choices. I personally think Hughes or Florimon Jr. should be called up. Whoever gets called up is going to rot on the bench until Wieters moves off the DL. Fox and Shrek will play 1B/DH. Fox will probably only get 1, maybe 2 starts at catcher.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Well, Snyder is on the DL
And Florimon has already been demoted this year back to Frederick; I don’t see him being the choice.

Jared Diamond is good
I liked his take on the players.
Given the first half Wieters has had, I suggest they keep him out
to be certain his hammy is OK. He’s performance has been way under expectations, so no need to hurry him back, especially with an injury easy to have reoccur. Maybe a month or so off would let him find batting stroke in the last month of the season. A little success would be good for his head, I would think.
His hitting with RISP has been dismal, he has made some egregious base-running errors, he doesn’t always run out “presumed” outs, and his throws to second base seem to tail to the shortstop side of the bag. I can see how he might have a problem adjusting to major league pitching, but I don’t understand how he can be doing the other three. Wasn’t he doing them in college?
In the meantime, on the Buster Posey watch, he was the NL Player of the Week last week, and last night, he only scored the first run and hit into an RBI-producing fielders choice to help the Giants to a 2-0 win over the Mets with Lincecum pitching. And, oh yea, he through out a runner at second with a bullet, accurate throw. He is now batting cleanup and some talk about him having a chance for NL Rookie of the Year are starting.
We can only hope Wieters eventually begins to perform as well as expected, especially since we had our choice of either Wieters or Posey.
