Orioles notebook: Orioles will be cautious with Luke Scott
"In the past two weeks, Luke Scott learned it's even harder to watch his team lose on television than it is from the dugout." Now he knows our pain.

Orioles Insider: Brady, B.J. get to watch this, too
"John Stockstill has been a big champion of bringing back some of the club’s former players to help out. Anderson, who is a part-time MASN broadcaster, has already gone to Triple-A Norfolk to work with struggling outfielder Nolan Reimold."

Orioles Insider: Roberts' postgame comments after first rehab game with Double-A Bowie
"Results are always good. I don’t care if you are in rehab games or you’re in the big leagues. Results are always good because they help build your confidence and confidence is a big part of this game. You always want to get results. You don’t ever want to go 0-for-5. That’s not the most important thing, but certainly if you’re getting results, it’s a good indication of where you are."

I’ll look for it next time. I love pomegranate, especially the mojito kind! (yes I drink pomegranate mojitos in public – yes my friends make fun of me – no I don’t care). I just didn’t like all the seeds in the yogurt – a big let down. Maybe you didn’t get one with as many seeds?

Never had a pomegranate mojito

I like a good pomegranate margarita, though. I like the seeds in the yogurt, but I can see how it wouldn’t be everyone’s thing. The Fage yogurt has the fruit in a separate little pouch and you mix it when you open the container. The yogurt itself is better than Chobani I think. More dense. The fact that I’m still talking about yogurt is kind of embarrassing. But I love it.

Lots of talk around concerning the delay in the managerial choice.

I’ve been wondering if Showalter also has cold feet.

Yeah, Angelos and MacPhail are not going to hurry any decision. No one seems to be highlighting the fact that Showalter might not be in a hurry.

by drj on Jul 20, 2010 11:19 AM EDT reply actions

If Showalter isn't enthusiastic about getting the job...

..then he’s the wrong guy for the job.

I doubt that is the case, though. Showalter has a good reputation in the public, but was voted the most hated manager in the AL by the players during his last stint with the Rangers and isn’t exactly seeing teams beating down his door. Baltimore is a good opportunity for Buck – he gets a chance to prove that his reputation for helping develop young talent and turning around franchises is warranted under the toughest of conditions – if he can make it here, he can restart his career.

So I suspect he wants this job. But if he doesn’t, then fuck him. Just like with Valentine, nothing could be a better indicator that you’re the wrong person for the job than your not wanting the job above any other option.

any chance

the delay has to do with the coaching staff? They can’t just nab other coachers right now – right? Clearly he can come in now and just use what he has and wait till the offseason to retool but not sure that would really be worth it I guess.

by Philly O's on Jul 20, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions

No idea what the delay has to do with.

It could be anything, I suppose. Including the coaches.

What's the consensus...

on the fates of Allenson and Samuel? Does Windmill get the boot out of the organization completely? Does Gary go back to Norfolk? Will the Crow be around still?

I think the delay has a lot to do with the coaching staff. It’s not like we’re fighting for a playoff spot (or even respectability), so what is the sense of making a move?

I could argue, however, that if Buck is the next manager, I’d want him to have input on the non-waiver trade deadline deals.

by TerroristFistJab on Jul 20, 2010 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

I mean, I hope Samuel is let go – he’s a lousy manager and a lousy third base coach, so what we’d want to do with him, I have no idea. And I think everyone here wants Crowley fired.

I don’t know enough about Allenson to say, but in theory, he should be going back to manage Norfolk.

Yeah, and to me that’s not understandable reason.

And being a dick works in certain work environments. Creative industries, which I believe where you work at, being a dick is acceptable. Artists typically need a lot a lot of creative anatomy in order to execute their vision. Thus being a dick is acceptable because it doesn’t undermine the central product being created. But that’s now how a dugout works.

by birdman on Jul 20, 2010 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I don't know

the best coaches I ever played for were huge assholes that most of the weak guys (I’m using “weak guys” instead of a 5 letter word that starts with P and ends with Y because I think Stacey gave me shit for using it once before) on the team hated, but they got the absolute most out of the players regardless of whether you like him or not. During the season you’d hate him and then after the season was over, you’d say “Holy shit that’s the best baseball we’ve ever played.” And then the next year when we had some nice guy coach everybody would be having a great time jerking off, but at the end of the year we all would have preferred the asshole. A couple weak guys ended up quitting because they couldn’t deal, and I’m sure that would happen with the O’s, but everybody who stuck around got dramatically better.

Additionally, he would alienate the shit out of guys like Nick and AJ, as wearing your cap backwards is “Bush” to ole Buck.

The more and more I think about it, I think Buck could possibly be the second worst choice to manage this team (after John Gibbons, of course). We need guys like Adam buying into this whole thing, not getting screamed at for blowing bubbles.

Look...

His defense has left something to be desired (though his UZR has improved), but for a guy hitting in front of Scott Moore, he’s starting to drive the ball with consistency and he’s even improving his plate discipline.

What will make him play better defense and swing at fewer balls low out of the zone? I don’t know. But I am confident in thinking Buck is the last thing that could help.

His plate discipline literally could not get worse

I’m glad you’re confident. I’m not confident that Jones will ever be better than Jeff Francouer at this point, but from what I know about him, a manager who will bench him and show him up is exactly what he needs. Otherwise, I feel pretty certain he will be Francoer – another player with talent who is uncoachable.

Now, does that have to be Showalter? Hell no. But it has to get done.

the doomsday scenario I keep imagining. It’s almost too on the nose.

What the Orioles need is not necessarily going to come from any one coach. They need an organizational commitment to the importance of taking some motherfucking walks.

The most horrifying thing about that Thorne comment

Is that it was while Nick was up to bat and after Thorne pointed out that Nick hasn’t taken a walk since the all star break, because right now it’s not about walks, it’s about extra base hits. GAG. Do not mess with Nicky, Juan! I will kill you.

Who knows what is going on

Showalter may be asking for conditions that he feels will ensure his success (e.g., let’s get these scouts or this director, etc.). It’s not like Angelos nor MacPhail seem prone to give away control. I just assume that MacPhail is having problems with personnel and the ability to fire/hire.

It’s not a one way street where Showalter just has to be made an offer and all is swell because he’s excited about the opportunity. I’m stating the very obvious, but maybe Showalter has issues after dealing with the front office. He’d be sane to say ‘fuck them I’m outta here’ if the Orioles don’t like the conditions he perceives as necessary for his success.

well - correct me if i'm wrong

but isn’t 90% of that team over 21 and do they ever put recently drafted players on Delmarva right away? Thus he is pretty much doing what he is expected to be doing? Thus there is a pretty good chance that he can play well at the next level – potentially this year? Thus a reason to “take a shine”? Thus I like to say thus, thusly.

Well, the league average age is 21...

…so, while I’m not sure the average age of the Ironbirds, I don’t think it matters – I care about the age of the competition.

The Orioles typically have not put newly drafted players on full-season teams. But the point is that the competition isn’t great, there are few quality pitching prospects in the league, and the ones who are there are guys like Zach Von Rosenberg and Brooks Pounders – guys who are younger than the college starters that Mummey was just facing.

I posted this in a fanshot...

but since they’re hardly read I thought I’d post it here.

I just read the article “A Perfect Game: The Metaphysical Meaning of Baseball” by David Bentley Hart. And it’s fantastic.

It’s a tongue-in-cheek article about why baseball is, philosophically speaking, the best sport ever. It’s a heavy read (lots of philosophical language) but it’s pretty great. The last three paragraphs are what make it especially great for us O’s fans.

FYI: Hart is a theologian and philosopher, but I don’t think this article crosses into the “lets not talk about religion” realm.

Here’s the link: A Perfect Game

That is possibly the best thing I’ve read online in months. Kudos to you, sir, for the link.

I'm excited about surhoff getting involved

I hope they are considering him for hitting coach. He had a great attitude here as well which is something the team really needs. I still remember him crying when they announced his trade to Atlanta.

Did anyone else catch palmers reasoning for tillmans pitching last night? He was talking about how tillman has a tendency to plant his front foot too early causing his pitches to come up. Shouldn’t this be something the pitching coach recognizes early and talks to him about? As far as I could tell, the 1st time they spoke with him was after he walked the run in…

by GeoffreyA on Jul 20, 2010 1:29 PM EDT via mobile reply actions

If he’s talking about planting his foot too early in relation to his arm coming through it could theoretically make the ball go up, but on the other hand that would probably mean he’s shortening his stride which is supposed to make the ball go down.

I just noticed that Caleb Joseph and Brandon Waring are both putting up rediculous numbers with the adjusted stats, and disappointing numbers without them. Waring goes from .236/.322/.466 to .270/.352/.500 and Joseph goes from .247/.318/.401 to .310/.374/.474. Looks like a problem with minorleaguesplits to me, any thoughts?

Florimon as a position player is much more likely to stick than a pitcher. A position player can rot on the bench. You can’t let a BP spot rot.

I had a ticket to go to the game in May to get said bobble, but a week prior I got downsized and it happened to coincide with my wifey going to L.A. for business. When she suggested I get a last-minute ticket, I had to work really hard to keep myself from saying “But what about the bobblehead!?” I did enjoy L.A. though!

Speaking of Mike Gonzalez

Last night when Alfredo Simon came into the game, they were talking about what a good pickup he turned out being. They got him for basically nothing and he’s come up from the minors to prove he can handle the closer role and get guys out and blah blah blah.

Now, I’m not sold on Simon, not in the least, but the entire thing just made me so angry about Mike Gonzalez. If you can go out and find someone like Alfredo Simon, why on earth do you sign Gonzo in the first place?

I've come to the conclusion that Angelos is just a fucking moron

I thought he must have had some sense to make enough money to buy the team in the first place, but how hard is it to sue Philip Morris and win? This is the guy who ran for the MD legislature three times and lost three times.

At the time he did it I'd say that it was probably pretty hard.

Going toe-to-toe with the tobacco industry is never an easy feat.

It’s just clear that the skill and intellect required to accomplish that legal victory has absolutely nothing to do with the skill and intellect required to evaluate the evaluators of baseball talent. Hence why before MacPhail came along we had basically nine years or so of people who were blatantly incompetent in that role.

And when it comes to free agent signings I’m not sure MacPhail gets a pass either.

I’d expect a person who made a huge fortune in business to have some clue as to how to run a business, maximize his assets, spend money efficiently.

If I had assets worth over 100 million, I’d be really pissed to see them squandered by the Orioles over and over again. And I’d do something about it.

Though I'd argue...

a baseball team is not a normal business.

Angelos has been annoying at times, but I still loathe him less than the guy that’s killing my football team.

I think one thing is obvious from the past decade or so of failure: the way the game is won by the organization has changed dramatically – and we’re only now realizing it.

Consider that Pat Gillick and Davey Johnson worked with veteran players (several acquired at the deadline) on those good teams of the late 90s. Hell, this was a veritable over-the-hill gang at that time. I think that aside from Dave Delucci, there weren’t many “young guys” contributing on those teams.

When Davey/Pat left, the wheels fell off and there was nothing in the farm system. Hammonds was a bust, Mussina left for NY, etc. I’d be really interested in finding out what exactly Gillick was doing with the draft during his tenure.

by TerroristFistJab on Jul 21, 2010 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I just went through the three...

Gillick led drafts, and shit they were bad. Like, awful. Although one pick in 1998 was pretty good. I completely did not know that the Orioles drafted Cliff Lee in the 20th round that year.

He didn’t sign of course, so it doesn’t matter, but damn they should have gone over-slot on him!
