"It’s kind of a slow-developing market at this point," MacPhail said. he's a warm body who was on the 40 man roster.
Luis Lebron isn’t ready yet. And he had a 3.52 ERA at Norfolk. That’s not great, but it’s not like he sucked.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Lebron had Tommy John surgery..
….he’s out for the year.
Mata wasn’t on the 40-man; he was placed on it specifically to promote him from Norfolk. And he was brought up because he throws really hard, had some success, and wasn’t worse than our other options.
Why he’s still on the 40-man is more of a mystery.

It is worth it to assemble all of that in one linkable article.

OH is an interesting place
As a staff they have regular press credentials and someone who covers the team and writes post games daily (Paul Folkemer, who is a great writer), and they have people who cover the minor league teams as well. Tony Pente is well connected with the Orioles management, and their forums are the largest single place where O’s fans gather online. And yet, the only way to find any of their information is to go to the site (which is poorly designed and hard to navigate) and explore. They don’t turn up in google searches, they have a twitter feed but it’s not updated regularly, they don’t ever collaborate with other sites, they’re just very isolated.

But it looks fine. It’s detailed and packed with information. If the author is attempting to explain why the Orioles have sucked, it’s nothing earth shattering. Frankly, it’s stuff we’ve discussing here for awhile. I would only that the another major reason why we’ve sucked and won’t get past they Red Sox and Rays is that their front office brain talent far exceeds ours. Epstein and Friedman are extremely bright and know how evaluate talent using innovative techniques. In terms of assessing, acquiring, and maximizing player value, Andy can’t hold their jock straps in this regard.

Well, it wouldn't have made sense for us
Arizona really screwed the pooch on this one, and I’m sure part of that was because they made the Haren deal in a way that limited his market to a preposterous extent. Having one of the top 15 pitchers in the league, signed to a reasonable deal through the 2013 season, but dealing him at the deadline when a lot of teams weren’t going to bid because their seasons this year are already done… well, I don’t think that was wise. They also clearly wanted to dump the payroll more than they wanted to get the best return, and other teams knew that. And they seem to be a team that fixates on a few particular guys – I don’t know why they seemed to want Ivan Nova from the Yankees so much, or why they seem to think Tyler Skaggs (who is a nice prospect) is a sure ace.
Over the last few seasons, they have traded away Carlos Quentin, Chris Carter, Carlos Gonzalez, Brett Anderson, Daniel Schlereth, Matt Scherzer, and Dan Haren and what they have to show for it is Ian Kennedy, Edwin Jackson, Joe Saunders, Tyler Skaggs and Pat Corbin. Amazing.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
It was a really weird deal all around
I don’t know why they couldn’t have waited until the off season, unless it was really about two months of his salary, which is just silly.

Right now, probably...
…before the offseason, I would have said no way. They have Upton, and Reynolds, and Drew, and two above average catchers, and they had a great 2009 draft.
But their participation in the Granderson trade was a disaster, which is nothing compared to how badly they fucked up in the draft this year, and this move now is crazy. Word is they are trying to get their payroll down to $60M. And they have given away a boatload of talent for not much.
They are pretty much fucked. If I was them, at this point, I’d look to deal Upton. Doesn’t make any sense not to.

The Nats aren't in that bad of shape
Zimmerman is a star. Strasburg is Strasburg. Jordan Zimmerman is looking good in his rehab. Josh Willingham is a nice bat. Harper and Cole could be one of the best two players taken in the same draft class ever.
If they can get something really good for Adam Dunn and Matt Capps, this could be a nice team.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
it looks to me
like they’re going to hold onto Dunn because of his clubhouse chemistry or whatever. Maybe that extra 2 or 3 wins is really, really important to the growth of Strasburg or something.
Hang onto me, baby, and let's hope the roof stays on
Eh
I mean, there are two ways of looking at this. The first is that all this “holding on to Dunn” stuff is just to keep his price high, so they don’t end up like the D-backs. The other is that Dunn is a good hitter who helps put people in the seats, and that is more important to the Nats than the value of a full rebuild.
I think they deal him, because I think Dunn overestimates his value on the market by a considerable margin. I think Dunn is a player who the market undervalues, but that Dunn doesn’t seem to realize this. I suspect he wants Ryan Howard money.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
which is fair,
because the difference between Adam Dunn and Ryan Howard is Chase Utley.
If the Nats are trying to hold him to keep his price high, then good for them. The reports from the Chicago media, if you believe them, were that they wanted Gordon Beckham for Dunn straight up (insert laughter here). Which means that they are badly overestimating Dunn and damaging their team in the process.
Well, the problem here is that Ryan Howard isn't worth his money...
…and every other team in baseball knows it. There probably isn’t a single GM out there who would sign Howard to that extension.
Dunn will go to free agency again, and I think once again he’ll end up waiting around and taking a much smaller deal than he wants. It is one of those weird things, I think, where baseball teams undervalue Dunn while Dunn overvalues himself.
Meanwhile, if I was the Nats, I’d want Beckham too, and I’d do everything I could to get him. Maybe they end up having to settle for a lesser package built around Vicedio, but I don’t love Daniel Hudson and I don’t think the Nats do either.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Of course you want Beckham,
even tho he’s struggling right now, he’s a definite blue-chipper. No way in Hell you get him for 2 months of Adam Dunn, the Chicago newspaper said that Kenny Williams was actually insulted by the implication he would make that trade.
And yeah, Howard isn’t anywhere near worth his money, he’s getting paid for his RBI’s because Chase Utley and Jayson Werth are always on-base in front of him. When you consider that Howard has a horrible platoon split, and only decent walk rates, and I would rather have Adam Dunn.
If this is still true...
I think they deal him, because I think Dunn overestimates his value on the market by a considerable margin.
then Dunn learned nothing from his last trip on the FA merry-go-round, which is what landed him in Washington to begin with.

Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
It's tough..
he has a ton of power (which the Orioles have lacked, obv), he walks a lot (which the Orioles don’t really do), but K’s a ton and is pretty ineffectual on defense (qualities we posess in abundance). I think he’d be a great fit here (as a DH/1B), but I can’t get a read on a fair price.

Plus, I’m warming to the notion that we’re going to get Prince.
Have i missed some bit of news? or are you just warming to the possibility?
I just think it makes too much sense
We need a big bopper. Prince is a great hitter who wants a big contract and will still be very young when he hits FA. And everyone in baseball seems to think he’s not worth it because of his body.
So, I think we should be the team to pay him what he’s worth. He won’t cost a huge premium because his demand is depressed. He’ll be young and worth giving a long-term deal.
The O’s will probably fuck it up, but he’s who I’d target.

He’s a FA after next season. We aren’t about to dump a bunch of quality guys for 1.5 years of Prince when we obviously arent that close.

If it takes a Texiera contract to sign Prince
Forget about him. He isn’t going to age well at all.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
His dad was pretty good through 32
Mo Vaughn was good through 34. He’s 26, and he’ll be 28 when he’s a FA. I wouldn’t mind a 4-6 year contract. I’d say no on a Tex- like 8 years though.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
I would love to have him as a DH. He fit the classic old player skills profile so I wouldn’t want him for anything longer than 2 years. DHs typically don’t make a lot. I would take him for 2 years, $18 to $20M.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Pretty much...
a redux of his current deal. The Nationals paid him $8m last year and are paying him $12m this year, which sounds about right.

i generally agree with you
i’ve been fairly supportive of the nats in these parts, usually taking flak for it. i think they’re getting much, much better, but in reality, their defense is absolutely awful, they have issues scoring runs, and the pitching is far too inconsistent. they are getting much better and will continue to improve if they find some pitching help.

The Nats are supposedly interested in Edwin Jackson
not sure if the constitutes ‘pitching help’ or not , but the kid does have an immense amount of talent and the Haren deal demonstrates that it probably wouldn’t take too much to get him.

No idea. My knowledge of the Nats farm system is nearly nil.
But at the end of a Fangraphs analysis of the Haren trade they noted that the D-Backs are showing a propensity for acquiring young (and in particular left handed) pitching. The rationale being that since the ballpark is so hitter friendly, the offense will do fine with who ever they plug in around Upton, Drew, Reynolds, etc.
Jackson is signed through next year at 8.35 mil. So I guess it would depend on how badly the D-Backs want to shed that from payroll.

Jeff Kobernus maybe?
I don’t know. I can’t see Jackson commanding much of a return, if this is all they got for Haren.

yeah, after they gave up Scherzer for him.
Baseball teams are dumb.
he has an immense amount of talent,
hes also 27 with an FIP of 4.31 in the NL West. Adding him would be fairly pointless, he’s pretty much league average in his prime because he has no control.
Well, I think it depends on how you want to look at it
Being lucky isn’t the same as being good, and the Nats have been a lot more lucky than good.
But since the Nats are a loser right now, I don’t think about their present issues as much as I think about their assets. Zimmerman is a fantastic asset and a hometown player. Stras is Stras. They have some good young players like Jordan Zimmerman and cheap assets like Ian Desmond, Drew Storen and Nyjer Morgan. And they have some decent prospects like Espinosa and Derek Norris, made a respectable signing in Yuniesky Maya and had a great draft if they sign everyone.
I don’t think they are a very well-run club, and if it wasn’t for having #1 overall picks, I think they would be in a lot of trouble. But if they became a well-run club, they’d be in a strong position.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
agree with you totally about that,
they had Strasburg and Harper fall into their laps, although they were at least smart enough to pick and sign them.
I remember...
listening to DC sports radio right before the Strasburg draft, when Boras was floating that $30-50 million number around. I don’t know which one of the hosts actually suggested that the Nats not take him.

For a trade that would have serious long term ramifications, I'd avoid dealing with a team you're actively competing with
Just to avoid the potential of a bad move haunting you in the future. But when the downside is that Wiggy in pinstripes could knock us down from a 58 win team to 56 wins over the next two months, I dont see a problem if we like what the yankees are offering in return.
So, that means Wiggy is getting some pinstripes?

Some people I know on another Internet board I visit are actually badmouthing Jon Miller.
Random fans of other teams judging him solely based on his ESPN Sunday Night work with Joe Morgan. “He should be good enough to squash how bad Joe Morgan is.”
I really don’t think these guys appreciate the difference between broadcasting on TV and broadcasting on the radio, and the difference between broadcasting on ESPN vs. not broadcasting on ESPN.
So basically it’s me and some Giants fans who are defending Jon Miller’s honor. Fuck the haters, I wish he was back here.

Are they always that sexist? Yowza. Trying to set you up with the Australian intern sounded pretty awkward, and then Lou from Phoenix greets you with, “She sounds like a pearl necklace girl.”
I also thought it was weird how interested they were in Matusz’s love life. I’m only six minutes into “part 2” so there’s a lot more potential for weirdness too.

depressing
The most depressing part of Roch’s article on the Kids is his recitation of Matt Hobgood’s stats. One must remember that he was the 4th pick overall. So far, MH has done nothing to suggest that he is a top tier talent. None of the reports I have seen praises his arm, or his stuff, or one of his pitches as plus.
Another depressing aspect of this season is that the Pirates are almost as bad. The Os are only 3 games “ahead” of them. I am afraid that we will lose the number one pick.
5th overall
FWIW, Hobgoblin has a plus curve.
