Samuel wants direction with Bergesen | orioles.com: News
"We need to discuss what we are going to do," Samuel said. "Right now he is [scheduled to start Saturday], but it's something that we really need to discuss and figure out. Is it the best thing for him and our ballclub? Is he going to be the guy we're counting on? It's something that we really need to look into." Well, Andy MacPhail has ruled out Zach Britton, and I can't imagine it will be Chris Tillman, so does Mark Hendrickson get yet another chance?

School of Roch: A must-win tonight
"It has to happen tonight. The Orioles are 0-11 against the Blue Jays this season. They can't go 0-12." Oh, Roch, you don't have enough faith in this team. I fully expect them to get no-hit tonight.

Does Nick Even Fit? - 2131 And Beyond
"With high RBI and extra base hit numbers in the past, nobody ever questioned his ability to play the game, only his impact on his teammates and how he affected their personal game."

Gaston thinks Samuel will be good skipper | orioles.com: News
"I was kind of hoping he would get a chance to manage that team for a while," said Gaston. "When he was here with us, Sammy was always in the game. "Sammy was a good player, a good person and a great guy."

Steve Melewski: Another mismatch
"Opponent starting pitchers have an ERA of 2.90 vs. the Orioles this year and have pitched into the seventh inning in 50 of 99 games. Get into the other teams' bullpen? Not this O's club." Steve won't be winning WNST's Apologist of the Morning today!

Baltimore Orioles Accept Assignment to Minor League (Satire) | Bleacher Report
"Major League Baseball announced today that the Baltimore Orioles have agreed to an assignment to the AA Eastern League for the remainder of the 2010 season." I'm not so sure we'd be .500 there.

Top Chef Voltaggio Adds Twist to Ballpark Food | FanGraphs Baseball
"Inside the ballpark, the chef had taken over one of the standard concession stands and turned it into a “Volt” concession stand for the night." I read the menu, and didn't see a single thing I would actually try except chocolate covered bananas. I'll stick with Italian sausage and beer, thanks. H/T to PBR Me for finding this.

Michael Aubrey names IL Batter of the Week.
Aubrey had five home runs and 16 RBI last week, including a 4 RBI night on Tuesday.

Orioles notebook: Orioles scouting director Joe Jordan frustrated with slow progress in signing draft picks - baltimoresun.com
"It's just been a slow, slow process, and it's that way industrywide for the most part," Jordan said. "I'm out here [scouting in Cape Cod, Mass.] talking to the other directors, and the game is being played. What used to be the [process with the] first-rounder is now the same with the 10th-rounder. It's just been brutal."

Steve Melewski: Britton not being considered for this weekend
"In a brief e-mail exchange with O's president Andy MacPhail, he said Zach Britton is "not" being considered to join the Orioles to start this weekend. So we can rule out any talk of Britton starting in Brad Bergesen's spot on Saturday. But Britton is being considered to join the Orioles later in the season, MacPhail said."

Norfolk lost 4-2
despite seven of nine Tides batters collecting hits as Zach Britton went 5.2 IP and gave up 2 ER with three walks and three strike outs.

Bowie lost 4-0
The Aeros knocked Baysox starter Rick Zagone off balance right away with five consecutive hits to start the bottom of the first inning.

Frederick lost 9-3
For a fourth consecutive night, a Keys starting pitcher allowed six or more runs. Lynchburg scorched RHP Ryan Berry for eight runs, seven earned, on nine hits. Berry lasted just four innings in the Keys loss.

Delmarva lost 9-0
as starter Kenny Moreland gave up 10 hits in 6.0 IP and Delmarva had just five hits for the whole game.

Aberdeen was off
but good tickets still remain for Cartoon Night on Monday.

Bluefield lost 9-1
as the Orioles made three errors that lead to three unearned runs early in the game.

and the GCL Orioles won 5-3
as the team collected 11 hits, including 4 doubles.

What what what what?

Is 2131 and beyond seriously suggesting that the Orioles DON’T NEED NICK MARKAKIS? Because he isn’t leading the team in homers, RBI, runs scored, or stolen bases, and because his pep talk hasn’t resulted in more wins? Because Juan Samuel called that particular win “flawless”? Because Corey Patterson – COREY FUCK ME PATTERSON – did a good job the other night while Nicky was off for the day? At least he says that Corey is “not a piece in the future most likely” (emphasis mine).

Look, what’s the best, nicest way to put this? I don’t want to be a prick, I really don’t. But when someone says something like “[Nick] is not all that impressive this season” and that “the true offensive production is just not showing” by citing runs scored, RBI, home runs, and stolen bases, all I can take from this is that this is an opinion I can safely ignore until it becomes substantially less dumb.

How about something that matters, like wRC, where Nick Markakis leads the team by a full 10 runs over second place Luke Scott? Or wOBA, where he’s in second behind Scott? Or something a little more digestible perhaps for the less mathematically inclined, like OBP? Yup, Nick’s our best player at getting on base. He’s just 0.1 WAR points behind Luke Scott for team lead. No, he doesn’t steal a lot of bases, but he’s actually been smart enough not to waste resources like Adam Jones and Cesar Izturis, who are a combined 10 for 20 (that’s 50%…that’s not just bad, that’s really, really bad – but Cesar does have more stolen bases than Nick, so he must be a better baserunner, right?).

Ugh. I don’t know the person who wrote that stuff…but suggesting trading away literally our only great young player is basically like saying “hey, let’s rebuild forever”. And I keep having to go back and reread that article, because I simply cannot fathom how someone can seriously think that Nick Markakis isn’t a cornerstone of this franchise because Corey Patterson went 0 for 2 on the night that Nicky had off.

For me, this is all i really needed to read:
Looking at Nick’s numbers in the box, he is not all that impressive this season. Who is leading the team in HRs and RBIs? Ty Wigginton. How about in runs scored? Adam Jones. Stolen bases? Corey Patterson. Look, the hovering .300 average is nice, but the true offensive production is just not showing.

you know what else I just heard?

Nick doesn’t have any wins yet this year either. It’s almost August and he’s still looking for his first win of the season, that’s disgraceful, we need to get rid of him for whoever will take him.

by Strat12 on Jul 28, 2010 2:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I liked this part too,

He is signed on to this team through 2014, with an option for 2015. Manny Machado may not be ready until about that time, and for all we know, neither may the pitching staff. The bullpen is certainly figuring itself out, but with the managerial questions and a look into the future, I’m not sure if I see Nick as being part of it. As much as he says he wants this team to do well, his efforts to push teammates along besides a rough media stint and a meeting with the man upstairs have been quite invisible. Markakis is 27 now, and if this team is looking to compete somewhere in the 3-5 years into the future area, I don’t see him sticking around that long. Despite the nickname ‘Nick the Stick’ and all the girls that are in love with his look, I believe The Stick not only wants to, but will move elsewhere eventually for the prime years of his career.

by Strat12 on Jul 28, 2010 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

first of all, he's 26.

secondly, you just said he’s signed through 2014 with an option to 2015, and then you said he’s not gonna be here 3-5 years in the future and that he won’t stay hear for the prime of his career. umm…What? Read your own sentences, it’s times like this I wish FJM was still around.

by Strat12 on Jul 28, 2010 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

yeah

it was just terrible. And let’s focus on the idea that Nick isn’t propping up his teammates. What does that even mean? Why do people immediately blame chemistry when things go wrong? What exactly would Nick Markakis have to do in order to be considered an “integral member of the clubhouse”? Hold his own press conference after every game where he publicly calls out his teammates? Nothing Nicky does is going to make Tejada 29 again, or Izturis suddenly good. I don’t get it.

I’m not trying to pile on, honestly, but this sentence is bizarre. It makes it sound like the reasons he might want to stay in Baltimore are: some people call him Nick the Stick, girls think he is attractive. I’m pretty sure that could happen in other cities, too. Also, since he’s “27” right now, the contract he has with the Orioles are through his prime years.

And I want to stress again

I don’t want to be that douchenozzle stats guy. Stats, man. They’re ridiculous. What I really want is for 2131AndBeyond (whoever that is) to step back and realize that he heavily implied he would rather have Scorey playing than Nick Markakis, and that he’s basing it on some heavily flawed logic. Nick Markakis is my favorite player because he is our best player, hands down, no contest, and I want everyone to appreciate that fact for its full weight.

I know what you mean

but I grow increasingly irritated with people who reference RBI without putting into any kind of context. Even if you don’t have a mind for the more advanced stats (I don’t. I am working at getting better but math, it’s ridiculous), the reasoning behind RBI not being a good measure of talent is nothing more than common sense.

I have a friend who claims

that RBI is a measure of a player’s clutch hitting ability. We have endless arguments and we finally agreed to disagree. Though I do love infuriating him (he’s a Reds fan) by saying that Ryan Howard is a better 1B than Joey Votto because Howard has more RBI.

It shouldn't be so hard to see, even...

for the most “traditional” of fans, that RBIs are almost entirely dependent on the actions/outcomes of other players. Context is everything.

by TerroristFistJab on Jul 28, 2010 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions

I'll never get

why so many people like counting stats over rate stats. You want to talk about clutch hitting and driving runners in? Then look at slash stats w/ RISP. You want to judge a hitter’s power? Look at his SLG %, not just his HR total. Luke hit 25 homers last year, which is pretty good, but when you realize it was in just over 500 PA, it’s significantly more impressive.

Right...

on all fronts.

Counting stats are fun when looking back over a player’s career, but we should be at a point now where the more advanced statistics get discussed.

by TerroristFistJab on Jul 28, 2010 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

My baseball mancrush

has posted the third highest OPS+ of his career this year. It’s only a point behind his second highest OPS+, due to his recent struggles. He’s second among position players on the team in WAR. He’s already 5 walks away from the total he put up last year. Yes, he’s hitting less home runs and that’s made his SLG lower this year, but he’s still a doubles machine and has a good SLG. And besides, he does what’s most important, getting on base.

Oh but he’s not getting RBI, what a lousy player.

And Ty Wigginton is better because he (at the time of the article) led the team in HRs and RBI? Sure, let’s ignore that when he fell back to earth, it was a very, very hard fall.

While we're heaping scorn on other people's O's articles....

Melewski:

Here are the number of Triple-A starts some young O’s hurlers made before their Major League debuts:
Arrieta – 28
Bergesen – 2
Berken – 5
Hernandez – 11
Matusz – 0
Tillman – 18

Some of the above pitchers have struggled badly in the big leagues. Was it because they didn’t get in enough starts and innings at Triple-A?

Going only by the stat sheet, Zach Britton just may be ready for the Majors. In several interviews with him, he sure has seemed mature enough to handle it.

So in the end, I’ll say I’m in favor of Britton coming up for four or five big league starts to end his year. He probably won’t go much over 170 innings for this season.

At this point, though, I can’t honestly say that would be the best move for his future development.

OK, first of all, it isn’t “some” of those guys who have struggled at the major league level. As starters, to a man, every single one has struggled badly.

Second, you can’t say that bringing up Britton is the best move for his future development, but you’re in favor of it? What the Deepwater Horizon kind of logic is that?

He's struggled

there’s no debate. But has he struggled more than what we really ought to have expected out of a rookie pitcher against this competition, with the added pressure (if you add much for pressure) of having a horrible defense and offense backing him up?

He’s been put – like every single other young player – in a position that isn’t suited towards his personal success. And there’s a lot of reasons for that. But so far, I’m more or less satisfied with what he’s given this year. It obviously needs to improve in the future, though.

But I’ve been keeping track of the 88 O’s vs the 10 O’s (as have a number of people). The 10 O’s are currently one game behind the 88 O’s, but I noticed today on B-R that the 88 O’s went 14-15 in August. Could anyone possibly imagine the Orioles doing such a thing? They play the following teams:

KC – 1
LAA – 6
CWS – 7
CLE – 3
TBR – 3
SEA – 3
TEX – 4
BOS – 1

Follow that up with a Sept/Oct in which the Orioles play two series each against every AL East team plus Detroit, and yeah, there is no way they are getting to 54 wins.

I can’t decide between that story, the one about him trading for a player who had already had a career ending injury because he didn’t bother to request a medical report, or asking JP Riccardi whether Shawn Green was available 2 years after the Blue Jays had traded him.

The scariest part of all of this is trying to figure Syd out. Most people respect a guy who has been around as long as he has, but Syd’s ego makes him hard to work with, or work for.
Whispers around the organization speak of an organization led from the top down, but without any sort of cohesion. It’s not uncommon for moves to be made within the system without the knowledge of Don Buford, Director of Minor League Operations. Players have been signed or released without Buford’s knowledge, and almost always Thrift is behind the moves.
Also, there is a concern over Thrift’s mental state. At times, Thrift can be affable and on the ball about everything around him; at other times, he appears to be in a confused state.

Sometimes it’s nice to remember how far we’ve come…

Or maybe this one
According to Peter Gammons, back in 2000, Syd rejected his own trade offer. Thrift apparently called the Mets in pursuit of Jorge Toca. He gave them a list of pitchers, including Jason Johnson. The Mets accepted the deal. Then Thrift rejected the deal he’d offered.

what kind of a guy would pick up a player

without getting the standard medical information taken care of? You’d have to be crazy to do that! You’d have to be crazier to put that man in a position of power for your organization!

Since Andy MacPhail has taken over the Orioles, his biggest free agency signing has been the 2-year, $12 million contract for Michael Gonzalez. This signing was interesting for several reasons since it was done without an MRI.

Oh….oh….

by Andrew_G on Jul 28, 2010 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

That's entirely different

you’re talking about requesting additional medical information. The player that Thrift TRADED FOR had already HAD his career ending injury – it was in his medical records.

Is it reasonable for GMs to ask players to have an MRI before signing them? Obviously you get a physical, but I don’t recall seeing anybody demand that somebody has an MRI before.

thats kinda what i was wondering, because he was healthy all season last year

Is it common practice to get an MRI from a free agent pitcher? I honestly don’t know. He has an injury history, but was healthy all last season.

by Strat12 on Jul 28, 2010 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess I wouldn't know

but he still signed an injured player with a history of injuries to a big contract without being thorough, and that’s a little….bad, don’t you think?

by Andrew_G on Jul 28, 2010 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

but I mean somebody was going to sign him. Whether we had to pay as much as we did or whether the signing made any sense even without the injuries is also a good question.

Without having any background to support this,

an MRI seems above and beyond what would be considered thorough in that context. Without specific knowledge of an injury, I’m not sure you can say MacPhail didnt do his due diligence.

I like the one where he traded for someone who was two years older than he thought.

I want to say that was John Bale but I’m really not sure.

God, the Syd Thrift era just makes me sad. All those fucking trades and the only one that turned out to be worth anything was Melvin Mora and that was a complete fucking accident.

Whenever I get depressed about the present I think: at least we don’t have that shit to deal with any more. Even if the actual team on the field in the majors sucks more than ever.

Hm.

Last night, I was talking with a friend about whether or not they should… given Victorino’s injury, they need somebody else there, but they had other options. I’m rather gun-shy about calling up prospects before a full year in each level now, thanks to all of ours sucking.

Interesting

With all the talk of our young pitchers struggling, I decided to look at some other top pitchers first years as a regular starter. Here’s what I found:

Pitcher A
1987 5.61 ERA, 1.638 WHIP, 76 ERA+, 4.3 BB/9
1988 3.18 ERA, 1.249 WHIP, 114 ERA+, 2.9 BB/9

Pitcher B
1989 4.82 ERA, 1.512 WHIP, 82 ERA +, 5.4 BB/9
1990 3.65 ERA, 1.338 WHIP, 109 ERA +, 4.9 BB/9

Pitcher C
2004 5.43 ERA, 1.503 WHIP, 80 ERA , 4.1 BB/9
2005 3.79 ERA, 1.218 WHIP, 111 ERA, 2.3 BB/9

A is Greg Maddux, B is Randy Johnson, and C is Cliff Lee. Granted, our young starters are doing worse than any of these guys first seasons as regulars, but looking at stuff like this helps me stay positive for the young arms.

Of course, there a number of examples I found of guys who were great right out of the gate like Mike Mussina, Pedro Martinez, and to a lesser extent Tim Lincecum.

Sorry for the lack of ‘advanced’ stats – I just pulled what I could off of B-R.com

Depends on who the other prospects are

Happ and scrubs for Oswalt isnt much of a return Houston, but a few other low-level but interesting names could even it up pretty quickly.

Theres been conflicting reports

A few days ago Oswalt said publicly that location didn’t matter as long as they picked up his option, but a lot of reports have still said that he wasn’t interested in Philly.

Jim Callis in his chat today on the O's draft signings:
Jim (WV): To date, the Orioles have only signed 1 of their first 10 round picks. They still need to sign: Manny Machado, Daniel Klein, Connor Narron, Dixon Anderson, Matt Bywater, Wynston Sawyer, Parker Bridwell, and Clayton Schrader. Who in this list do you see not signing?

Jim Callis: I don’t know particulars on every one of those guys, but most of them are going to be over slot deals, so they’re not imminent. The Orioles were aggressive in the draft this year and I expect them to be again this year. They’ll sign most of those guys, and they’ll get Machado done for sure.
