Saturday Bird Droppings - Make Your Own! Edition

Manager Juan Samuel of the Baltimore Orioles pulls starting pitcher Brad Bergesen in the eighth inning against the Boston Red Sox. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

So, Verizon's DSL service in Salisbury has basically decided to take a week-long vacation, so I can't open most internet sites without timing out. Instead of leaving you bereft of reading choices this morning, I'm going to ask for your help - post your own links here.

Seriously, you be the Bird Droppings editor today. Post a link, the headline you would use, and either a really good quote from the article or a snarky one-liner about its contents. I can't add them to the story, because I have a funeral to attend this morning about an hour away, but I'm sure Stacey and zk and the other mods will be more than happy to add them. Right, guys?

Even if this little experiment doesn't work, at least we have an Open Thread for today. Go O's!

A lot of people don't look at who actually write articles.

This one was written by REUTERS. But what can be said is the NYT chose this article as one to run, so they do bare responsibility for that.

Next time you open up your local paper look at the number of articles written by either the AP or Reuters. Then you’ll understand why local news isn’t what it used to be.

From Steve Melewski (emphasis added):

I am pretty sure this is not necessarily true, but the impression out there seems to be that Adam Jones is running the show and not the other way around.

We read and hear things like “the O’s met with Adam and asked him to play deeper in the field. They asked him to charge the ball more often.”

First of all you would hope Jones is taking these “suggestions” to heart, because he doesn’t want to become known as the first Gold Glove winner to be considered completely mediocre on defense the very next year.

He needs to take pride in his defense. We are told he works hard at it, now it’s time to see the fruits of that labor.

And in fact, if the coaches are “asking” him to play deeper, maybe it’s time for another approach.

Why not just say “hey, Adam, we have this kid Matt Angle at Triple-A. You may not know him, but he’s really good on defense. I bet if we call him up, he’d play anywhere in the outfield we tell him to, don’t you think?”

"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver

by Vuff on Jul 3, 2010 4:14 PM EDT reply actions

You left out the really horrifying thing in that post

Melewski is suggesting that the Orioles promote Britton to the majors after he pitches in the Futures Game on July 11th. Since he works for MASN and often is given information by the club, this could mean that the Orioles intend to bring up Britton after two AAA starts and about 100 innings above A+.

Yes, I saw that too.

our prospect pattern

I don’t necessarily disagree with giving him a September callup. It wouldn’t hurt him at all. I’m more worried about why no one is telling tillman to stop leaving the ball up at ML level. And on that topic, I’m not sure why they keep sending him down. Check that, we need to limit the exposure to the ML staff as much as possible.

I hope we have a manager (hopefully buck) in place after AS break. The team needs him so he can be like “excuse me Terry, but gtfo of me clubhouse”

by GeoffreyA on Jul 3, 2010 5:15 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I don't see that as our prospect pattern at all

The stories about how Bell is not going back to AAA are already out there today. We jumped Matusz from AA to the majors due to injury and he’s never gone back. We made Tillman the youngest pitcher in the majors and seemed to have every intention to keep him there until spring training.

As Melewski points out, a September callup is unlikely for Britton because of his innings cap – he’ll have no innings left to pitch unless they go crazy when September comes. Meanwhile, I’m sure people are telling Tillman to keep the ball down – unfortunately, it isn’t as easy as telling him to do it. If pitchers could control where they throw the ball with precision, then everyone would be Greg Maddux.

Meanwhile, what makes you think our minor league staff is any better than our major league staff?

To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa

by James F on Jul 3, 2010 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Well I'm not the only one

There have been numerous articles/ reports linked here and on ESPN questioning why they have all these super prospects at the minor league level that aren’t peforming as such in the majors.

Wieters was top 5 and #1, he’s struggling (although I feel he’s doing fantastic on handling defense and the staff)

tillman was #4 prospect last year, he’s dominating minors struggling majors

matusz #5 (might have been 7) overall last year and #4 this year, he’s struggled.

Arrietta was top 50 this year and while I completely disagree with his callup due to that walk ratio, he has struggled.

by GeoffreyA on Jul 3, 2010 5:37 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

they have struggled because the organization hasn’t seen fit to balance out the team with proven big league talent

Plenty of other teams have loaded up on youngsters

But they all had ML quality coaching staffs, not this LL bs we’re exposed to on a nightly basis.

by GeoffreyA on Jul 3, 2010 6:27 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

i tend to place very little credit blame on coaching staffs

but i feel strongly that young, talented guys need proven talent around them

by thewaywardO on Jul 3, 2010 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Back it up then

I’d be interested to see the evidence.

I think you are wrong, because there are innumerable examples of this not being true. Nick. Carl Crawford and James Shields. Ryan Zimmerman. Andrew McCutchen. Hanley Ramirez. King Felix. Tim Lincecum. Zach Grienke and Billy Butler. All of them became good on lousy teams.

To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa

by James F on Jul 3, 2010 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I can't judge a persons ability to accept coaching but I'll go over those guys

King felix was marginally above .500 his first 4 years. Greinke was far below average his first 4 years.

Most of the others are good examples, I’ll give you that although I have no idea what coaching changes they may have made. James shields success has come along with tampas climb. The SF situation may depend on the staff there as their pitchers overall seemed to have performed well the past 2-3 years (same time Bochy, a former catcher, arrived).

I’m not saying it’s 100% but you can’t argue it’s not a significant contributing factor. You mention Nick, but you don’t point out his power numbers seem to be dropping in his prime. Is it because he tries too hard? The orioles were one of the only teams that felt Nick was a better batter than pitcher. Several teams wanted him as a pitcher when he cane out. Special talents= special circumstances.

I’ll look for the links monday night from real baseball analysts on the impact of our coaching staff on our talent. I’m pretty sure there have been multiple bird dropping articles in the past few weeks criticizing the management and handling of our young kids. I believe several sources even pointed directly at that as the reason our kids are struggling.

by GeoffreyA on Jul 3, 2010 9:28 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Did you really just say king felix and greinke weren't that good b/c of their win %???

And i cant tell if part of your response was to James, but he would probably agree that we need better coaches for the young talent. Also, the idea that you need talented players in order for young players to be good is silly. Talent wins out and is not contageous.

I just used it as a baseline

If you’re 5-17, chances are you were pretty bad- grienkes 2nd yr w-l record in which he had a 5.80 era, 1.56 whip, .309 BAA.. Those totals start to even out by the 5th year which is what I was getting at.

King Felix’s numbers didn’t start to hit top end starter stats until his 5th year.

I was merely using the w-l as a guiding stat, sorry I should have used more proven stats when able but I’m at work.

I was more addressing the fact that I don’t know what coaches other teams have, have hired or fired.

by GeoffreyA on Jul 3, 2010 10:26 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

nick is good on a lousy team

so what?

the kids need some proven talent around them. how hard is that to understand? i guess for a stat nerd like you it’s impossible.

by thewaywardO on Jul 4, 2010 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions

You're referring to me?

If so, that’s amusing. It doesn’t take stats to realize how poorly coached this team is and has been for years. But keep believing in your pipe dreams. I love Nick and feel this should be his 2nd AS game. That doesn’t change the fact that I think he’s trying to do too much right now.

by GeoffreyA on Jul 4, 2010 10:27 AM EDT via mobile up reply actions

Ick.

I must’ve skimmed over that.

Selling tickets in order to play the national anthem?

Jesus, that’s cutthroat.

I got to perform the anthem with my high school marching band at an O’s/Blue Jays game in 2000. Anthems, actually, since it was in Toronto, so we had to do “O Canada” as well. We just happened to be in Toronto on like a whirlwind marching band competition tour. We sure didn’t have to sell 350 tickets.

I can’t stand Joe Buck, obvi, but it’s nice hearing Millar! It’s nice to see Strasburg throw a pitch outside the strike zone and not have to listen to Rob Dibble being indignant about how the umpires are screwing Strasburg over.

I ♥ Kevbo.
