The Orioles have traded left-handed reliever Will Ohman to the Florida Marlins for right-handed pitcher Rick VandenHurk.
VandenHurk, 25, has pitched in two games for the Marlins this season, allowing three hits and one earned run in 1 1/3 innings. He has pitched for Florida since 2007, compiling an 8-9 record and a 5.96 ERA.
The Orioles plan to move VandenHurk into the starting rotation at Triple-A Norfolk. VandenHurk worked with Orioles pitching coach Rick Kranitz during the 2007 MLB season with the Marlins.

Someone tell me there's an upside to this
Ohman was one of our few semi-reliable relievers.
his walk rate scared the bejeebus outta me
Tiger got to hunt, bird got to fly; Man got to sit and wonder, 'Why, why, why?' Tiger got to sleep, bird got to land; Man got to tell himself he understand.
Agreed, walks are not good for a reliever
But it’s not like there’s now someone super effective who will now eat up all of Ohman’s innings. I think he was leading the AL in appearances (which, of course, points to how bad the O’s are, but…). So more innings go to, who, Albers? Koji (he’s due for a lengthy visit to the DL)? Berken? (Who is beginning to show the signs of wear and tear), etc.
Yet another Orioles move that, to me, makes little sense…acquiring yet another “promising” arm. If anything, a trade like this ought to net someone who can, you know, hit the baseball into fair territory where the other team can’t catch it. We don’t seem to have even 9 of those type players in our starting lineup.

AM said just not on O's xtra that Patton would probably be coming up.

Lot of games, but he's only pitched 30 innings.
I don’t know how quickly Gonzalez is going to be moved back to closing, but he’s certainly going to pick up late innings, and he certainly looks healthy now.
His ERA was a mirage
His WHIP was 1.6, which is poor for his role. He allowed 11 ER and 11 inherited runs. Good job to sell high, AM.
Also, he pitched a whopping 30 innings so far this year, against 135 batters. We should be able to find someone else to labor through half of the 7th inning.

Who gives a shit about Ohman's innings?
They were meaningless when he was pitching them and they will continue to be meaningless when somebody else is pitching them.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
Who gives a shit about a a 32 year old reliever with a 1.6 WHIP and 5.4 BB/9?
Getting ANYTHING for him is awesome.

Harsh words here
@keithlaw I also like Rick VandenHurk as a flier on a good arm, but the problem is that right now the Orioles couldn’t develop a Polaroid.

buh-bye, ohman
have fun in miami, where the middling marlins decided their best playoff option was to trade away their 3rd baseman and attain an overworked, overperforming middle reliever.
Well, at least he'll get to enjoy more victories
The Marlins may be having a mediocre season with a 53-51 record, but frankly, that’s a lot better than the Orioles this season. The 3rd baseman, Jorge Cantu, was useless. The Marlins have better prospects for 3rd base. The bullpen is where they are hurting, and they have fixed a lot of it with their trades…or so I hope.

Oh wow! You mean to tell me that the Marlins have a better record than the O's????

Well, sorry...but it seemed to me like he was trying to ridicule the Marlins and well...
With the kind of season the Orioles are having, we are not exactly in a position to criticize others much, considering the “middling Marlins” have won almost twice the number of games we have this season.

um, yes
i was criticizing the marlins for picking up ohman. what sense does it make?
and i don’t see what the o’s problems have to do with me not being able to criticize another team. yes, the marlins are much better than us, but when I say “us”, it doesn’t actually include me. i had nothing to do with the o’s plight. therefore, it is not hypocritical of me to say the marlins made a dumb move imo.
but hey, i’ll take it.
Why the fuck are you over here?
Go back to paying attention to your shittier league.

Hey you need to calm down
This dude is an Orioles fan and has been over here plenty. There is no need for you to say stuff like that.

Well, the Marlins happen to be my NL favorite, and the Orioles my AL favorite
Why? Simple, umh, I used to live in New Jersey and I became an Orioles fan rather than a Yankees fan (thank God), and now I live in Miami…and I saw no conflict in liking the Marlins, given that they are in a whole different league and everything.
In the few rare games when both even play each other, I root for the Orioles.

One last thing:
Since you bothered looking up my profile in a lame attempt to prove something, am surprised you missed the part where it shows I’ve made 460+ posts in the Orioles site, and only 32 in the Marlins site…which is consistent with what I said above.
Oh, and the Texas Rangers site, I got banned from there for making fun of them after the Orioles destroyed them…. a few of us around here did ;)

He's been over here quite a bit, I would have thought you'd recognize his name
Not to mention it’s right there in his signature, and the fact that he didn’t get rude or obnoxious at all, and yet you felt the need to get all angry.

I really like this move
Selling high on a middle reliever and getting a starter with upside. Good job Andy
Good luck with VanderHurk...seen him play, not to impressed...though he is improving and has potential
I think it works good for both teams, the Marlins have great starters, JJ, Nolasco, Sanchez, etc….but our bullpen was awful beyond belief. I think this is a great trade for both teams, I couldn’t be happier. I’d love to see both teams have stellar seasons next year.
