Bell leaves game with leg cramps | orioles.com: News
"I'm fine," [Josh] Bell said after the game. "Just the way I was positioned in the box, I couldn't really turn on it, so as soon as I swung, I fell and it just cramped all the way up." You know, when Joe Angel made the joke about that being God's way of telling Josh not to swing so hard, he may have been right. -duck

"I hope Felix [Pie] comes back and hits. 300," [Corey] Patterson said. "I'm rooting for him. Just because he does well doesn't mean I can't as well." No, lack of a consistent hitting approach will take care of that, Corey. -duck

Orioles Insider: The silver lining on Matusz
"[Brian] Matusz has made eight of his 17 starts against either the Boston Red Sox (three times), the New York Yankees (three) or the Tampa Bay Rays (twice) and in those games, he has a 2.90 ERA and has allowed 41 hits in 49 2/3 innings." Less is more with singing of pre-game national anthem - baltimoresun.com
"According to Monica Barlow, the Orioles' crack director of public relations, the team asks aspiring performers to send in a CD or MP3 audio file of their rendition of the anthem....And here's the best part: The Orioles tell the singers to keep it to 90 seconds." Kevin Cowherd's not right much, be he's right here. The National Anthem should never break 1:10. -duck
IN THE MINORS

Bah!
Matusz’ amazing start for my fantasy team was erased by Lilly’s sucky start…..I ended up losing 9-0-1.

I had been riding Liily's recent hot streak as well
I knew it had to come to a crashing halt at some point. Hindsight being 20/20 and all, pitching against the Reds should have set off some alarms in my mind. That team can mash (even w/o Joey Votto).

The Tejada headline makes it look like he might stay an O until 2131 and beyond.
Waiting 'til next year.
I hate to be supporting a guy on PHN
But how the hell is Youkilis not on the team? I know he’s on the write-in, but he should be on the team already. We’ve seen what he can do against us, and only an All-star can constantly put #‘s up like that. He’s 4th in the AL in OPS, 7th in WAR, 7th in homeruns, the list goes on and on, he’s in the AL top 10 for nearly half of hitting catergories, yet he’s not on the team. That cements it, Girardi is an idiot.

Holy hell.
He’s hit more then 33% of HR’s against us. Also, he hits a homerun every other game against us, that’s pure luacy. (6 HR’s in 12 games)

half of JD Drew's 10HR have come against us as well
I think maybe Youkilis didnt get in because when they subtracted his stats against us, they started to look fairly pedestrian.
Wheres Nick....
Obviously Nick not making the All Star team is a joke,he is and has been our most consistant player and seemingly never gets credit for it from MLB and our own fans. There should have been massive voting by O’s fans, but there wasn’t.Maybe Nick should be packaged in a trade where he can play with a chance to win and where fans truly appreciate the rare player we have have in right field…
Do you understand how All-Star teams are chosen?
Because only starters are chosen by fans. Every one else is chosen by the manager and/or the players. The only way that an Orioles is going to make the team based on fan voting is he’s the best player at his position and Nick is certainley not the best outfielder in the AL. It was Girardi choice to take Wiggy, and fan voting can’t change that. I voted for Nick because he was an Oriole, but if he didn’t play for us, I wouldn’t have voted for him, he’s a very good player, but he’s not a great player. Also what proof do you have that he’s not appreciated? Have you been to Camden Yards, because every time I go, the most jerseys and shirts I see say “MARKAKIS 21” I’d tend to think if he’s got the popular jersey at the stadium, that he’s pretty damn appreciated.

The National Anthem should never break 1:10
Unless, of course, you’re singing the recently discovered additional verses
If we could get Alvin and the Chipmunks
We could break 30 seconds and be back in our seats without breaking a sweat.
He has some pretty impressive power numbers right now
too bad his average and on-base percentage are so terrible.

Apparently the managers were told by the league to pick multi-position players
which explains Wiggy and Infante.
Posanski's All-Star Snub column talks about this
http://joeposnanski.si.com/2010/07/05/all-star-game-talk-from-south-africa/
No one can agree on what standard should be used to determine all-stars or what the all-star game “means,” so theres never going to be any way to objectively determine who actually deserves to be named.
thats so shitty tho
for the 1 player per team thing, they really should just be picking the top player from that team.

not to mention other good players getting snubbed for some shitty players
he isnt a shitty player, but jason heyward starting for the NL??

You cant argue too much with the starters since its always gonna be a popularity contest as long as there's fan-voting
but i cant think of any metric that justifies Infante over Votto.
It is a popularity contest
But I think the voters often get it right, or at least close to right. Back in 2005 when the O’s were tearing it up before the ASG, they voted in both Miggi and B-Rob and the Orioles have never been the popular choice. Teams with a bigger fan base and players with more hype have the edge, but performance does matter.
Oh and now we’re warming up Uehara. He’ll die. He will actually DIE if he pitches in this heat. -KenDixonFanClub
That makes sense in theory
But what if the best player from all the sucky teams is an outfielder? You’d have a bazillion outfielders on the all star team and no second basemen or whatever.
I think that if you want the AS Game to be a meaningless exhibition, you stick with one player per team. But when you start giving it meaning (such as home field advantage) maybe you just go with the best overall roster.
Oh and now we’re warming up Uehara. He’ll die. He will actually DIE if he pitches in this heat. -KenDixonFanClub
i thought about that too
but i can think of several infielders better than wiggy that didnt make it. and david ortiz as the “DH”??? for what? his 17 hrs?
i like wiggles, but he by no means gives the the AL a better overall roster than markakis would. in fact, for both hitting and defensive purposes, markakis could play a muchhhh bigger role. plus, i have little to tell me that jose bautista is any better than markakis unless you’re only looking at HR and SLG.

Jose Bautista has way more HRs and RBIs
And those are the two most important statistics in baseball.
I don't have a problem with Ortiz
He’s having a great season at the plate.
There may be several infielders who are better than Wiggy, but I’d argue that there are several outfielders who deserve it more than Nick (and Jose Bautista). How about Alex Rios? He’s having a hell of season. What about Shin-Soo Choo? Hell, how about David DeJesus for crying out loud?

I don't know what that's supposed to mean
other than you think those guys aren’t having a better year than Markakis, which just isn’t true.

i thought we were just naming outfielders
actually i was just kidding. i totally agree they are playing better than nicky. i just think if you’re going to take 1 from every team, take the best player regardless of position. after the pitchers etc are selected, there are only a few teams without an all star anyways.
