Happy Felix Day, y'all!
Oh and now we’re warming up Uehara. He’ll die. He will actually DIE if he pitches in this heat. -KenDixonFanClub
So
Josh Bell, who hadn’t exactly pushed the issue with his performance at AAA (looking at you, platoon splits and strikeout rates) but who was on a hot streak* (it sort of baffles me that this was considered an actual reason some of you all gave for rationalizing his call-up, and I don’t say to deride anybody, it just sort of baffles me is all), and who has met expectations by being terrible* and showing off exactly why he isn’t ready for the majors*, will most likely remain on the roster as it sounds like Millwood will get DLed in favor of Felix Pie (and the 40 man doesn’t need an adjustment).
Um. When did this team stop doing things that were in the best interest of their prospects in lieu of “We can make the room on the roster elsewhere”? I like Josh Bell – I drove through rush hour traffic in D goddamned C to go up to B’more from Falls Church to see his debut. It would make me happy, and it would behoove the Orioles, to do right by him and send him back down probably for the remainder of the AAA season. Because he looks like dogshit up here. And yet…
This is the same stupid logic, I think, that had the brass doing the Brad Bergesen shuffle*, which will probably have them doing the Chris Tillman shuffle for the rest of the year, and which I can sum up thusly:
*Small sample sizes!
Fire Julio Lugo.

Yeah
At this point, I’d rather have Goldman Sacks running the Orioles than our current front office. Maybe they are OK by baseball standards, but by those of a real business, we’d be bankrupt by now.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Hrm
what’s been bugging me is that they did right by Nolan Reimold. He’s got 99 problems (well, maybe 100 problems) and then sent him down basically right when I thought they should and they have given him as much time as he needs to get that number back down to 99, and they’re making him get himself out of this mess. Kudos – not that he’s ever gone on even a weeklong tear to give them an excuse to get back up. But why treat him one way and basically everyone else some other way?
Fire Julio Lugo.
I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?
Eh
I don’t think they did right by Reimold, who I thought should have begun the year on the DL Indeed, I think they have compounded his difficulties in a myriad of ways – having him on the ML roster early in the year when he wasn’t healthy enough to play, demoting him when he was doing better against ML pitching than he had at any earlier point in the year, and trying to have him play first base for the first time in his career while he’s mired in a hitting slump and dealing with his considerable off the field issues.
I don’t know that I can name a single decision the club has made since the end of the 2009 season of which I approve. To me, it is literally like some kind of mass insanity infected the Orioles brass when the Yankees won the series.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Fair points
I don’t remember what I knew and when I knew it, so it’s a little tough for me to sit here now – in the future – and pass judgment on the decisions of the past. And anyway, my larger point is that not everything has turned to shit (Hernandez and Berken’s success, Wiggy’s inexplicable trade value soaring) and not everything that did suck did it because of bad decisions (Millwood’s suckitude).
There have been a lot of bad decisions – let’s not forget the way Gonzo and Brian’s injuries were/are being handled, especially in light of how JJ’s injury is similarly being handled – but then I’m not a doctor, and I don’t know what Dr. Andrews or Brian’s back specialist told the Orioles, and if they chose to ignore that advice or follow it to the letter. It’s hard to find fault exactly. But I don’t think the warehouse is just making constant bad decisions all over the place.
Fire Julio Lugo.
I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?
Eh
I remember being critical of the decision to retain DT, although not that critical. I was highly critical of the moves with Reimold when they were happening, disliked the Atkins signing at the price he cost, disliked the Millwood deal, hated the Gonzalez signing, argued in favor of spending the money on international FAs and using replacement level players to fill the major league roster.
Not all the moves I argued for have worked out, of course. Pedro Feliz, who I wanted for 3b, has been a disaster for the Astros. Aroldis Chapman has been moved to the bullpen in the minors. Nor did I foresee the depth of Jones and Wieters’ struggles. But I still think philosophically that we’d be better off having moved in that direction. I don’t think the Warehouse is constantly making bad decisions. I think that they have made some bad decisions, but worse yet, there has been a total absence of good decisions. Since the end of the 2009 season, can we name one decision that has been better than indifferent?
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
I'd say again moving Berken to the pen
a smart move that I had some doubts about but I’ve been totally destroyed by. I guess that’s not exactly earth-shattering (neither is moving Hernandez to the pen), but it provides the Orioles with a pretty solid basis for a bullpen in what we all hope are the competitive years ahead a short way.
Thing is, I have sort of a closed definition of “successful decision”. Bringing Millwood would be a great move for a contending team like the Cardinals, and I’d still call it a good (but not a great) move for the Orioles which hasn’t worked out because now we can’t trade him, which basically ruins the whole cake, since his actual performance never really mattered and he was but a short-term player anyway (which is what keeps it from being a really good, non-indifferent move for me).
And anyway, how many opportunities have there been for really good, strong moves? I mean, if we had handled Roberts perfectly (and I don’t know that they didn’t), that’s at best an indifferent move and more probably something we don’t even think about. If we had signed Pedro Feliz and he had been basically Cesar Izturis (as opposed to the worstest player ever), it’d still be a short-term move with no long-term payoff (like Millwood), and to me, indifferent.
And it’s not like the trade market has come and gone yet – there’s still a ton of the year to go for making some good moves.
Fire Julio Lugo.
I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?
you could make a case that we missed the opprotunity to sign Adrian Beltre
I think we have been a little too worried about “blocking” our can’t miss 3B prospect who was going to be an everyday starter by the AS break. Then again, I’m not convinced Beltre will keep up this level of production throughout the remainder of his contract
As I recall
Beltre wasn’t considering the Orioles – and why would he? – since he was perfectly happy with Boston’s money and playoff chances. Not sure he was a realistic option.
Fire Julio Lugo.
I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?

I thought we put out an offer for Beltre
But he didn’t receive any offers he deemed big enough so he took a one year deal with Boston.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Beltre was never going to sign anywhere but Boston
It was a foregone conclusion. If professional sports were ever to actually enforce tampering rules, i suspect that would be way at the top of the list.
he would have happily signed here for 5 years, $60.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
I'm still not sure this is even true
Beltre was all about signing a one year deal with a contender in hopes of signing a huge deal next season. I’m not sure even 5/60 would have gotten it done.
It definitely would have been enough. His last contract was 5 years, $64 during strong economic times. He’s crazy if he thinks he’s going to get more during an economic downturn and being 6 years older.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Well then
wouldnt the Orioles have been completely nuts to offer 5/60 to a guy who just put up a 2.4 WAR 30-year old season?
Fire Julio Lugo.
I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?
absolutely
And I’m not terribly thrilled about offering that after this season. This season is obviously a fluke. He had a flukey walk year in 2005. 3 years, $30M or 4 years, $40M sounds like a good price him.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Indeed, I think they have compounded his difficulties in a myriad of ways – having him on the ML roster early in the year when he wasn’t healthy enough to play, demoting him when he was doing better against ML pitching than he had at any earlier point in the year, and trying to have him play first base for the first time in his career while he’s mired in a hitting slump and dealing with his considerable off the field issues.
Completely agree. Same thing applies to B-Rob.
I don’t know that I can name a single decision the club has made since the end of the 2009 season of which I approve.
I don’t think they’ve been this bad. Players haven’t developed. But in terms of roster decisions, they’ve done fine, not perfect mind you. But, at a lot of people, were on aboard with trading for Millwood (not me!). And they’ve made the right decision in handling Jones, Wieters, Matusz, Berken, and DH.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
I’m hoping they don’t do the Bergesen shuffle with Bell. I’m still thinking the reason they did it/are doing it with him is because he’s not a prospect and they won’t do it with somebody who is. Tillman is a different case because they have no idea what to do with somebody who dominates at AAA but flounders at the ML.

but who was on a hot streak* (it sort of baffles me that this was considered an actual reason some of you all gave for rationalizing his call-up, and I don’t say to deride anybody, it just sort of baffles me is all),
It isn’t a good reason to bring up someone on a permanent basis. For someone who’s going to be brought up for a handful of games before being sent down, it’s reasonable thing to look at.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
I mean, I guess
that is, if minor league hot streaks can translate to major league hot streaks. And I haven’t seen any reason ever to think that they can. If you have some good counter-example, then go for it.
Fire Julio Lugo.
I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?
if minor league hot streaks can translate to major league hot streaks.
I just don’t see that as relevant because, of course, there’s no evidence. It’s nearly impossible to predict how anyone will play in a 2-3 game frame. The O’s essentially had two choices: Bell or Rhyno (both players are on the 40 man roster). Between those two guys, I really don’t care who they bring up, but Bell has played better lately.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
Dave Cameron sends some love
over at fangraphs, saying DH would be on his AL All-Star team if he really needed to build a roster designed to just win the game. I’ll ignore his lack of notice for Jason Berken (my feelings for Jason Berken are very strange. It’s like falling in love with your worst enemy all over again):
David Hernandez gets the call as a long reliever who can bring some heat if the game goes to extra innings and you need a guy to stay out there until it ends – his overall numbers aren’t great, but he’s been lights out since moving to the bullpen and the stuff is certainly there.
