That’s just great. I mean, it sucks no matter what, but given all the garbage they loved to spew about Trembley being Mr. Tight Ship and all, it just figures.

Players ain't dumb.

Clearly they know what to say to try to keep a cream puff around.

His point about how it can’t change with Juan Samuel as the interim because he was a part of that spring training is probably right, and also really fucking depressing.

I don't think it's depressing

If it’s true, then we know what at least a good piece of the problem has been: the coaching staff has been mishandling the players (which we could have guessed before, I suppose) and that means that there’s a decent enough chance that a different voice (and not even necessarily a different tone of voice) will change things in the clubhouse and make this team a little more focused and disciplined.

I have a hard time saying this team doesn’t work hard and isn’t focused (even if they look that way) because I have no idea how hard they work, and I personally am talking here instead of working.

Fire Julio Lugo.

I like baseball, movies, good clothes, fast cars, whiskey, and you... what else you need to know?

We'll never know the truth

I was always on the fence with Trembley. Never a big supporter or detractor. But if this stuff is true, he should have been canned ASAP. Maybe that’s what happened. Again, if this is true, it makes you wonder what the rest of the organization was doing. Coaches, front office, etc. Did they all turn a blind eye to this stuff? We’re they ignorant or uninformed? Either of those options tells a depressing story.

A new coaching staff with the right attitude and discipline instilled throughout the minors on up can’t come fast enough. We may have to wait for the off season, but it has to happen.

by drj on Jul 8, 2010 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions

We're all part of the problem though.

We all knew and expected many of the young players to have a guaranteed spot on the team. Most, if not all, of us welcomed this as the supposed cavalry coming to the rescue in the form of a bunch of inexperienced ballplayers in their early 20s. Some like Wieters and Jones have been hailed as premature saviors dating back a year or two at this point.

In hindsight it was little more than desperation from both the fans and organization alike. We had a team that was so shitty that we desperately wanted a big change. Well, we got it and guess what? Now the team is even shittier. It was almost to impossible to believe that they could go downhill given the half assed squads we put on the field in years past. But they did. This team is worse. Much worse.

Can some of these guys turn it around with new management? Christ I hope so. But let’s not fall into the trap again of counting our chickens way before they hatch like we did with this batch of developmentally challenged Baby Birds.

by Jonny Pops on Jul 8, 2010 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

re:

Recent comments (including those from Weaver, Robinson) state that the organization lacks consistency from the minors on up. Weaver was pretty blunt that it lacks scouting. This is not a new problem and has been suspected for a long while. The merry-go-round in the front office and weak coaching staffs have exacerbated the issue. I don’t want change for changes sake. I want a front office and coaching staff that will instill that discipline and hopefully attract some talented people.

I think MacPhail has run up against an extremely disorganized franchise. Fans lay a lot of issues at his feet. I think he has a mountain of dysfunction to straighten out. I hope he can and is allowed to do so. Cleaning house and getting a strong coaching staff is a necessary start.

The parts that mystify me about that story

1. Really? I mean, Britt, Roch, Zrebiec were all there. Lots of other journalists were there too at times, passing through with Baseball Tonight and such. And Craig Calcaterra is breaking this story, in an interview, now?

2. Really? And no one has said anything on the record? Does Atkins not have an incentive to trash the org? Does Justin Turner? Some of these guys come from highly professional clubs, like Gonzalez with the Braves, or have been here for a long time and can speak their mind, like B Rob and Nick. And they have kept silent even while mouthing off about other stuff?

by James F on Jul 8, 2010 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

The three you mention though...

…are all part of the institution, so to speak. Narratives develop inside a press corps, a form of groupthink that the reporters go along with. The narrative during the last spring training was “Youth to the rescue!” That’s the story the fans and organization wanted and that’s what we got – along with a half-baked team.

by Jonny Pops on Jul 8, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, you see this kind of thing in politics too.

There are a lot of things that reporters know that they don’t “know” in the sense that they can’t print anything about it if they’re adhering to the idea of journalism. They might get off-the-record grumbling and they don’t print anything because they feel like if they burn a source they won’t be able to do anything in the future.

When one enterprising person finally does get some on-the-record quote or confirmation of something that everyone knows, then they can all come out and say, “We’d heard X but couldn’t talk about it” or whatever.

Why wouldn’t players on the outs say things like that? Because then you’re burning bridges if you want to catch on with another organization – less likely to take a flier on someone who’s labeled themselves as that sort of malcontent. It’s one thing if you’re a miserable son of a bitch who dogs plays and nobody likes – but if you go to (gasp) the press, you are somehow worse.

Or if you take a guy like Nick, even when he finally kind of blew his top and called out the team’s approach in public, he still didn’t throw any guys under the bus because that isn’t “what you do”. You can say one thing to the press to keep up appearances while working behind the scenes to do something else. I think a fly on the wall when he met with Angelos would have probably heard about this issue, though.

Trophies

I totally agree with Cal on the trophication of America’s youth. We put such a premium on participation, we are losing the competitive edge of youth sport. I saw a kid that was NOT good at basketball have a shelf full of BIG trophies (mostly basketball), and then I looked at them closely and only 1 was for anything but participation. The 1 was for 3rd place (team) in a youth league. 3rd place!

I just came back from Cordoba, Argentina and competition among the youth there is crazy! I am not saying their culture is better, but it puts way more emphasis on results and not participation. I kind of think that spirit of competition in life is good… it promotes creativity, an entrepreneurial spirit, and innovation. Leading from the back is impossible, one marine reminded me…

We are losing the competitive age in life

In my job, we train younger kids on a daily basis. For the past 5-7 years there has been a drastic culture shift. Young kids can’t seem to deal with failure because they have NEVER been exposed to it. So you get these kids that almost kill 200 people and you’re trying to teach them and fix their problems. They just sit there laughing… It’s very frustrating but today we live in the world of not keeping score, cheering bad performances and coddling people who’s top-end is probably the fry machine st McDs…

And on my semi daily mention. Not surprised more and more stories come out about the piss-poor coaching staff. Young guys need guidance, idc who you are…

My kids get a trophy for participation at the end of swim season

and I’m OK with that- a suitable reward for months of hard work.

But damn if they get a ribbon in an actual meet unless they earn it. And when they come in 8th place, it says EIGHTH PLACE right on it. Not “Participant”, it says in big bold letters EIGHTH PLACE. And if that isn’t motivation to swim faster, nothing is.

by duck on Jul 8, 2010 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

this is nothing new. I was on my local swim team 25 years ago…and everyone got trophies at the end of the season. Look how bad we all turned out!

In individual meets, people who got 1st, 2nd, or 3rd got ribbons for their accomplishment. Did I miss something… have they stopped giving out ribbons for actual achievement??? I certainly valued my ribbons a lot more than I did my trophies. Also, individual record holders for our team were prominently displayed at the main entrance to the pool. If i were born two days later I would’ve been in a lower age group and made that board. arrgghhhh.

This whole thing just screams to me of Fogeyism. All that “when I was a kid…” is BS.

I had a ton of Participant ribbons and trophies from elementary and middle school track meets and baseball. Even at the time, it didn’t mean anything to get them. Are kids these days that gullible? :-)

I had a good laugh last summer when the packets for a 5K had a participant ribbon in it. How’d they know I wasn’t going to win it?

by kba26 on Jul 8, 2010 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Even if we...

are coddling kids in youth sports, they sure are learning a whole hell of a lot about competition when they’re applying for a dwindling pool of summer jobs, working on things to fill out their college applications, etc. Sports are nice and good for kids and all (if done properly) but the last thing this country is turning into is “noncompetitive”.

I won’t hide my biases, Fox and Friends (Steve Doocey, really?) is garbage to me, they clearly have a point they’re trying to lead their guests to and that is what it is. Cal isn’t an expert on child psychology, nor are the hosts on that program. If they can produce some data that suggests giving out participation trophies is an impairment, then I’ll shut my yap. Until then, I’ll continue working off of personal experience, knowing how much recognition means to a child that knows that they’ll never be an elite (or even proficient) athlete.

Even though BronBron is the crown jewel, there is no way Bosh and Wade agree to announcing three full days ahead of LeBron, giving him all the attention. All Stars

It says a lot about the Os pitiful player development system that over the last 30 years (since Cal), we have produced only a single player (BRob) who was a legitimate All-Star. One can argue that Nick deserves to be an All Star, but, so far, the voters have not agreed. One would think that by accident the Orioles could have chosen a great player in the draft.
