Joe Jordan to press box for conference
My guess is to announce signing.

So if no more news...
…then that means no on Anderson, no on Gonzalez, no on Urban.
Brings this draft to a C- for me.

Well, good
Question for those who know better than I do: Does Machado now become the top prospect in a depleted farm system?
"Tragedy is what happens to me. Comedy is what happens to you." -Mel Brooks
Depends
I’d put him above Britton, but some people have Britton as a top 25 guy now.

Actually
Baseball America had Zack Britton at #10 in all of Baseball

yeah I thought lots of people had him as a top 10 guy
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
he's probably #2 behind Britton
Britton is almost ready for the majors now, Machado is still at least 2-3 years away.

I'd like to refer all questions to the Pie Chart
It's a fight to the finish. That's a good place to stop.
Yes

Don't expect BD before 10 am at this rate
"I might know a couple things that you don't know. 'Cause I've been young, but you ain't never been old." - Elvin Bishop
So, he signed for less than Wieters
http://twitter.com/danconnollysun/status/21373797005
Machado signed for less than $6 million Wieters got. Second largest bonus in O’s history. Still waiting on exact numbers

So we have a potential A-Rod in our hands?
Me likey

he's not gonna be A-Rod,
but he could be very, very good
So you're saying...
he’ll hit like A-Rod but he won’t do roids, wear purple lip gloss, scream at pop flies, swat at tag outs, cost way too much money, be a Yankee, and date Madonna, right? Cause i’m down with that.

don't forget
that he won’t have paintings of himself as a centaur in his house either.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
he won't hit like A-Rod
he’ll be reasonably close, but he doesn’t have the A-Rod’s power or speed, although he should have above average power
If he's "reasonably close" to A-Rod's production
well, I might have one of these episodes.

If Machado turns out to be worthy of playing in the same ballpark as A-Rod, this will be a watershed moment in O’s history.

It’s official… Orioles have signed third-round draft pick SS Manny Machado just before midnight deadline.

Jordan said it happened 3 minutes before deadline

Austin Wilson didn;t either
whoever the hell that is

One of the best hitters in the class
No one thought he’d sign, which is why he fell to the Cards in the 12th round.

oooh KLaw reporting Harper got a major league deal
that sucks for the Nats
It's a fight to the finish. That's a good place to stop.
Yeah, that really worked out for us with Adam Loewen, huh?

Here's my question
If Harper isn’t going to catch, is his bat that good for RF?
"I might know a couple things that you don't know. 'Cause I've been young, but you ain't never been old." - Elvin Bishop
his bat is good enough to play at any position
thats what they say
It's a fight to the finish. That's a good place to stop.
he's supposedly got legit 80 power, which is as good as it gets
I see Adam Dunn in his future
with better defense because hes a much better athlete

by Reddrummer9187 on Aug 17, 2010 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions
people forget how good of an athlete that Dunn was when he was younger
Harper has more arm strength, but Dunn could run when he first broke into the league. He just got so huge that he lost his speed, which I think will eventually happen to Harper too.
His head has a good head start on that already
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
apparently Harper is a fantastic athlete though
he is 6’ 3" 225lbs, but dunn is close to 300 lbs. Dunn’s a really big boy

Dunn wasn't always just a big lumbering guy.
He ran a sub 4.5 40 and was ranked as one of the best QB prospects in the country coming out of high school. Signed a letter of intent at the U. of Texas. He was a freak athlete too.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
damn
Do you have a link for that? 4.5 40 is insane

let me dig around
I found it pretty quickly by googling Adam Dunn quarterback

dave winfield was like that, too...
i mean, it’s hard to imagine THAT guy being a highly recruited hooper, but there you are.

He’s 16/17 who tore up a strong JC competition using a wood bat. His bat will play anywhere. Isn’t Harper the best hitting prospect ever? Past Griffey and A-Rod?
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.
did you read somewhere that the JC league he played in offered strong JC competition?
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
hmm
I had heard that it wasn’t that great. I mean none of the JCs are THAT great in terms of consistent competition, but it seems odd that one in Vegas would be really good on a national level. I believe the best JC leagues are in Florida, CA, Texas, etc.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
noooo, i've read he's got the best power anyone's seen on a 17 yr old since Griffey
but A-Rod and J Upton were both considered better hitting prospects. More polished approach and a better hit tool. Harper ‘s bat will play anywhere though. And his JC league was a strong JC league, but it’s still below 4-year colleges, and several notches below the ACC or SEC.
NOT a MLB deal for Machado
http://twitter.com/Britt_Ghiroli/status/21374123661
#Orioles mandate this was not a Major League deal for Machado. Like I said, 2nd biggest bonus under Jordan, behind only Matt Wieters.

Good
we’re juggling the roster enough as it is to put a HS player on it

So I have one dollar
that says Joe Jordan redrafts Anderson and Urban.
I’m going to bed. See you all in The Future.
It's a fight to the finish. That's a good place to stop.
So, does that mean it's $5M?
Machado not a major-league deal. Bonus is under $6 million, over $4. Will get exact soon

James F won't like this
The Orioles also reached agreement with 19th-round pick Kenneth Wise, a pitcher from Santa Fe JC. They didn’t reach agreement with 11th-rounder Alexander Gonzalez or 16th-rounder Brandon King.

"I might know a couple things that you don't know. 'Cause I've been young, but you ain't never been old." - Elvin Bishop
But we signed 8 of out top 10!!!!
Rounds 1-11, with Rd 2 missing, obviously, we signed 8. Is missing on Rd 7 and 11 that bad?
"I might know a couple things that you don't know. 'Cause I've been young, but you ain't never been old." - Elvin Bishop
Well, Anderson was our sixth rounder...
…and our fourth best prospect. And we didn’t draft all that great to begin with – it isn’t like we had a class like the Red Sox or Blue Jays with lots of high ceiling guys, so that if we miss on a few we had a lot of depth.
So you have to take into account the depth of the class. Since we didn’t draft with tons of ambition, for our class to be good, we had to get all the right guys to sign.

You have to expect a few to slip through the cracks
I’m sure some of those kids had ridiculous demands and they weren’t budging.
You may have a point about the quality, but the quantity is there.

Connolly: $5.25 for Machado
The $5.25M to Machado is second largest signing bonus in O’s history. Wieters got $6M in 2007.

I'd just like to say that I have nothing personal against Bryce Harper
but I hope he hits 10-15 dongs and fans 200 times a year for as long as the loathsome Gnats are paying him 9.9 gazillion dollars for his services.
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Churchill,1942-- a rebuilding year.
I'm not a fan...
I can like Strasburg. But Harper just seems really annoying. Someone posted that he changed his employer on Facebook so I decided to look him up and it seemed ever post contained “knarley”. That would get really old, really fast.
"If I was being paid thirty-thousand dollars a year, the very least I could do was hit .400." - Ted Williams
I just can't help feeling he has a GREAT chance of becoming The Next Dave Nicholson. Good luck there, young fella!
"Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." Churchill,1942-- a rebuilding year.
He's a douche.
But he’s also only 17, so he probably smells like the Hollister stores I avoid in the mall.
(Don’t bathe in it, kids.)
I’m pretty sure you get a douche pass if you’re only 17. If he’s still douchey in 3-4 years, well… hate away.
I think the ML deal is a bad idea. A very bad idea. But they’re the Nationals, so whaddya gonna do?
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
So does that mean his 6 year clock starts now?
"I might know a couple things that you don't know. 'Cause I've been young, but you ain't never been old." - Elvin Bishop
I can't find a source, but I'm pretty sure that it means
they place him on the 40 man, and that they use one of his options for every year he isn’t playing in the majors. So when he starts in A-ball or whatever next year, he automatically loses one of his options. The arb clock doesn’t start until he’s on a major league roster.

Agree on being 17 ...
as a fan of both teams I think I am more excited for the Nationals front office than I am the player. He could suck or he could be another Jason Hayward, time will only tell, but folks don’t need to hate on a 17 year old quite yet,( or until he does turn out to be a douche) and you can’t blame the Nats for signing 25 of their top 26 draftees.
I am pumped for the Machado deal hopefully there will be more to come for the farm…..
