My guess is to announce signing.

So if no more news...

…then that means no on Anderson, no on Gonzalez, no on Urban.

Well, good

Question for those who know better than I do: Does Machado now become the top prospect in a depleted farm system?

id guess he's number two behind Britton

Depends

I’d put him above Britton, but some people have Britton as a top 25 guy now.

Actually

Baseball America had Zack Britton at #10 in all of Baseball

he's probably #2 behind Britton

Britton is almost ready for the majors now, Machado is still at least 2-3 years away.

Machado signed for less than $6 million Wieters got. Second largest bonus in O’s history. Still waiting on exact numbers

So you're saying...

he’ll hit like A-Rod but he won’t do roids, wear purple lip gloss, scream at pop flies, swat at tag outs, cost way too much money, be a Yankee, and date Madonna, right? Cause i’m down with that.

If Machado turns out to be worthy of playing in the same ballpark as A-Rod, this will be a watershed moment in O’s history.

with better defense because hes a much better athlete

people forget how good of an athlete that Dunn was when he was younger

Harper has more arm strength, but Dunn could run when he first broke into the league. He just got so huge that he lost his speed, which I think will eventually happen to Harper too.

Dunn wasn't always just a big lumbering guy.

He ran a sub 4.5 40 and was ranked as one of the best QB prospects in the country coming out of high school. Signed a letter of intent at the U. of Texas. He was a freak athlete too.

He’s 16/17 who tore up a strong JC competition using a wood bat. His bat will play anywhere. Isn’t Harper the best hitting prospect ever? Past Griffey and A-Rod?

hmm

I had heard that it wasn’t that great. I mean none of the JCs are THAT great in terms of consistent competition, but it seems odd that one in Vegas would be really good on a national level. I believe the best JC leagues are in Florida, CA, Texas, etc.

by O'sFan21 on Aug 17, 2010 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions

noooo, i've read he's got the best power anyone's seen on a 17 yr old since Griffey

but A-Rod and J Upton were both considered better hitting prospects. More polished approach and a better hit tool. Harper ‘s bat will play anywhere though. And his JC league was a strong JC league, but it’s still below 4-year colleges, and several notches below the ACC or SEC.

NOT a MLB deal for Machado

#Orioles mandate this was not a Major League deal for Machado. Like I said, 2nd biggest bonus under Jordan, behind only Matt Wieters.

Rounds 1-11, with Rd 2 missing, obviously, we signed 8. Is missing on Rd 7 and 11 that bad?

by duck on Aug 17, 2010 12:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, Anderson was our sixth rounder...

…and our fourth best prospect. And we didn’t draft all that great to begin with – it isn’t like we had a class like the Red Sox or Blue Jays with lots of high ceiling guys, so that if we miss on a few we had a lot of depth.

So you have to take into account the depth of the class. Since we didn’t draft with tons of ambition, for our class to be good, we had to get all the right guys to sign.

I'd just like to say that I have nothing personal against Bryce Harper

but I hope he hits 10-15 dongs and fans 200 times a year for as long as the loathsome Gnats are paying him 9.9 gazillion dollars for his services.

I'm not a fan...

I can like Strasburg. But Harper just seems really annoying. Someone posted that he changed his employer on Facebook so I decided to look him up and it seemed ever post contained “knarley”. That would get really old, really fast.

He's a douche.

But he’s also only 17, so he probably smells like the Hollister stores I avoid in the mall.
(Don’t bathe in it, kids.)

I’m pretty sure you get a douche pass if you’re only 17. If he’s still douchey in 3-4 years, well… hate away.

I think the ML deal is a bad idea. A very bad idea. But they’re the Nationals, so whaddya gonna do?

I can't find a source, but I'm pretty sure that it means

they place him on the 40 man, and that they use one of his options for every year he isn’t playing in the majors. So when he starts in A-ball or whatever next year, he automatically loses one of his options. The arb clock doesn’t start until he’s on a major league roster.

Agree on being 17 ...

as a fan of both teams I think I am more excited for the Nationals front office than I am the player. He could suck or he could be another Jason Hayward, time will only tell, but folks don’t need to hate on a 17 year old quite yet,( or until he does turn out to be a douche) and you can’t blame the Nats for signing 25 of their top 26 draftees.

I am pumped for the Machado deal hopefully there will be more to come for the farm…..
