Those of you who follow Daniel on Twitter might already be aware, but he's been tracking a crazy streak of Pie's, one that ended when he struck out Sunday. Leading up to that K, Felix put the ball in play 63 straight times (no Ks, no BBs). The former O's record for this zany stat was held by Brooks Robinson. MANNY MACHADO IS COMING TO BALTIMORE

Orioles, Machado agree to terms - baltimoresun.com
"According to a source, [Manny] Machado, the third pick overall in June's amateur draft, will receive, pending a physical, a $5.25 million bonus, the second-largest in Orioles history. Catcher Matt Wieters, who, like Machado, is represented by agent Scott Boras, signed for $6 million as the fifth overall pick in 2007."

Orioles Insider: Jordan reacts to signing first-round pick Manny Machado
"We got a new player. It went like we thought. We had a really good read on the financial side of it, what it was going to take. Again, it played out till the end. We’re very happy. I’m not going to release the terms. They’ll be out there pretty soon, but it’s a good deal for the club and the player."

Steve Melewski: More on Manny and a few other things
"We had most of the terms entered," Jordan said. "We put together the other parts of the contract beyond the signing bonus. There is language, there is school money, we had all of that figured out before hand. We just had to plug in the bonus and the payout schedule," Jordan said. Jordan added the O's will exceed last year's $8.7 million on last year's draft.

Doesn’t say much, but summarizes our minor leagues as such:

Matusz hasn’t done what people expected, but I think he will eventually. Two other pitchers I like a lot are Britton and Berry. There wasn’t much hitting on this list to begin with, and most of it has been disappointing. There are also too many people named “Brandon” in this system.

I would be pretty shocked if he wasn't our #2 prospect next year.

I think since Britton is so much closer to the majors, he’ll be #1 and I don’t think anyone else from the system is going to be close.

Yeah, there is a pretty steep drop off after Bell on that list.

I would assume that Bell won’t qualify as a prospect next year, since he should get enough ML service time this season.

Yesterday turned into a pretty great day

Started out great at work, then went downhill quickly minutes before leaving, and I figured my day was shot. Had dinner, started watching Giants-Jets and keeping an eye on the O’s. Giants were losing, Manning got a ultra nasty gash that just gushed blood all over, and Simon sucked balls. Then, the Giants blew up, Lugo draws a walk, and everything is amazing. Now maybe the green kool-aid drinking slows down just a bit around here (NJ, not CC) and we beat Seattle yet again. All is right with the world.

Also, I got a new phone so I can actually take CC with me (like i’m not on here enough). If anyone has cool insider android secrets, clue me in. Got the Droid 2. Hope it’s not the double-posting machine that Apple puts out.

No, that is outside the scope of our application. We recommend you use iTunes to upgrade your purchases to DRM-free iTunes Plus files. Apple charges $0.30 (ouch!) for every audio file you wish to upgrade and $.60(oof!) per video.

Tinfoil hat comment

I’m not going to buy any Google product anytime soon. I love their search function and language tools, but their position on net neutrality bugs the crap out of me. Most people I know have Google so integrated into their lives, they’d be pretty well screwed if Google decided to charge for the freebies. …. WAY too much power in one place. Apple may be an over-controlling company, but they’re not trying to control all the information in the world like Google is.

I think there's room for them to coexist

No knocks on anyone who uses an iPhone, but that’s a platform for all ages. Simple, easy to use, limited in features compared to other platforms but nothing that gets in the way of doing a lot of convenient stuff that makes life easier. Geeks/enthusiasts can jailbreak it if they want to do more.

Android (the “Droid” is just Verizon’s branding for some of their Android phones) is great and does more, but the learning curve is a bit steeper, especially since there are so many iterations and versions of it floating around. Also not as smooth or fluid as iOS – the iPhone 4 really blows every Android phone out of the water when it comes to overall UI speed and fluidity.

I think the most important app/site to get started is App Brain

http://www.appbrain.com/

It’s like the Android Market, but does a whole lot more. You can download the App to your phone and use it in place of the Market to browse apps on your phone. You can sign in on the website from your desktop computer and browse apps, read and write reviews, and basically do a lot of things you can’t do from the official Android Market website yet.

Most importantly, though, is that you can browse apps on your desktop through App Brain and then “push” them to your phone one of two ways: you can tag it and then manually download it to your phone through the App Brain app – meaning the next time you open the App Brain app and press “Sync,” it will download all the apps you have tagged. OR, you can install the App Brain Fast Web Installer. This way, when browsing the App Brain website, you can click “install” on your desktop and it will automatically download it and install it to your phone.

I just recently got a cassette tape adapter for my ancient car stereo

so I’ve been using an App called DoggCatcher to snag podcasts. It downloads them over the air, either automatically or manually.

Also been loving Grooveshark. The Amazon app is great for going into Best Buy, scanning a barcode, and seeing just how overpriced Best Buy really is. I’ve been playing games called Shopper’s Paradise and Alchemy. Shortyz is a great little crossword app that automagically downloads crosswords from major newspapers. I use Jorte for my Calendar.

My favorite app is Tasker

It’s like $7, but it’s seriously the best thing ever. You basically schedule your phone to do anything you want, and the possibilities are pretty endless. I never have to mess with my settings, because my phone now automatically does it for me. When I get to work, everything goes to vibrate. When I leave, my ringer turns on. When I get home, Wi-Fi gets turned on and brightness goes down. If I am home Monday-Friday mornings, Pandora automatically comes on to wake me up. When I start Maps or Naigation, GPS gets turned on, and gets turned off when I close it. It really is the coolest app ever, and the fact that Apple would never allow it on the iPhone gives me joy.

Other great apps: Baseball Scores, DC Metro Transit Info, Dropbox

Advanced Task Killer

Do you have it set to auto-kill apps? I did at first, but my phone was acting verrrry strangely, like resetting by itself, etc. I did some forum searching and setting Task Killer to auto-kill was screwing up everyone’s phone. When I turned off auto-kill, the phone went back to working normally. Now I just use it to manually kill apps.

ah, does ATK kill any app running (assuming you don't put them on the exception list)?

I noticed that whenever I open ATK, there are different apps showing up on the list. Does that list vary simply by what’s running in the background at that particular time?

Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.

by birdman on Aug 17, 2010 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes, I think

You say that your phone is running slowly. Do me a favor and open ATK, press MENU, press SETTINGS, and then press AUTO KILL LEVEL. What do you see? Is it set to anything other than “DISABLE”?

If so, then I would suggest selecting DISABLE to turn off the auto-kill function. Keep it off for a day or two and see if your phone behaves any better/faster.

by PhilR8 on Aug 17, 2010 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions

It was set to disable

But since my phone is acting so slowly, I decided to experiment with the setting. I switched it over to safe yesterday. And I must say that this is the one drawback with android phones (at least mine). I noticed the more and more apps you download, the slower it gets. Until I downloaded google voice, it didn’t bother me, but now it’s getting too slow.

Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.

I have never used Google Voice on my phone, although I do have it turned on and use the “only use for calls to foreign numbers” setting. Meaning any time I type in a phone number outside the US, Google Voice will make the call, not my phone’s dialer. Not that I’ve ever made a call to a foreign number, but if I ever do…

no Evo for me

It’s fucking huge. I don’t know if I’m on board with the Evo anymore. I don’t feel like carrying around a phone that barely fits into my pocket. I’m going to get rid of google voice. I downloaded it because I thought it made calls through your phone’s interest connection, thus I thought the voice quality would be better. Not the case unfortunately. I really like the voice mail service but it’s not worth draining my battery and slowing down my phone.

That's why I went Droid 2 over Droid X

that thing is sexy as hell, but it’s just way too big. It was really between the Incredible and the 2 for me. While the incredible has a couple nicer specs (like an 8mp camera, though I dont really use my phone as my primary camera anyway), I felt I needed the saftery net of the hardware keyboard. Ive never had a phone without one and ive never really been happy with virtual keyboards. I think I made the right choice so far.

BTW, i’m not a small guy either (6’1") but that thing is still way to big for me.

Players go on arbitration their 5th and 6th years of team control, and are paid approximately 60% and 80% of their market values.

It will be 6 years after his ML debut.

The major league contract only affects when his debut will be, it means he is using up one of his options for every year in the minors. So he has 4 years to make it the the majors or he will have to go back to the minors on waivers. For minor-league contracts, players have 6 years to make their debut. Basically, the major league contract is used to get players up to the majors to start their arb clock faster.

so theoretically

he could be in the organization for 10 years? 4 in the minors and then 6 in the majors?

if he passes through waivers after his 4th year (unlikely)

than i think he can spend 2 more years in the minors and then the full 6 years of arb in the majors. I’m not sure about that though, and it doesn’t really matter cause he would probably have to lose a limb to pass through waivers. So yeah, 10 years is most likely the limit from what I understand.

by Strat12 on Aug 17, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Recommendations

If you’re not clicking with Founding Brothers, these may not do it for you, since Ellis is a pretty lively writer and the book is pretty short as far as these things go… But maybe a different point of view beyond the endlessly rehashed “founders” might be more engaging. (Caveat: with one exception, this is an academic’s list of readable books by actual historians rather than folks who are more popular history writers [e.g. McCullough et al.], so YMMV.)

Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, A Midwife’s Tale is excellent — beautifully written and also a major, important work in its own right (though it does dwell on daily life rather than high politics, so you can decide if that’s what you want).

John Demos, The Unredeemed Captive is a very readable microhistory of Puritan/Indian interactions around the turn of the 18th century (I have some problems with it, but it’s definitely readable).

Jill Lepore, The Name of War is a similar work (unsurprisingly, since Demos was her advisor) on King Philip’s war. Very well-written (she writes for the New Yorker a lot these days).

Catherine Allgor, Parlor Politics looks at the role of women and sociability in the beginnings of the federal government in Washington. Another very well written but also serious historical book.

On the more popular side, anything by Tony Horwitz is good. His early America book, A Voyage Long and Strange is pretty interesting, as are Confederates in the Attic and Blue Latitudes.

College players have more experience at a higher quality of play

Making it theoretically easier to project their likelihood of success. That, and they’e older, so their physique is much closer to what it will eventually be than a 17-year-old kid.

But it’s still a crap shoot. Especially with pitchers.

Higher ceiling

college players have given scouts 3 more years to assess what they might turn out to be. It’s much less likely that a college pitcher will surprise anybody and surpass expectations. High school players haven’t played as advanced baseball, having faced the toughest amateur competition, aren’t done growing yet, etc, so they have more room for development.

I always thought it was more

right

they are easier to project because scouts have seen them for 3 more years. It’s that much more unlikely that they’ll be something entirely different after everybody has seen them play against the best competition in the country for 3 years.

But if you already have an idea of how a college player will pan out

Then would you even take a chance on a high school player? I guess I can sort of answer my own question…in the O’s case it might be better to take a chance on a high school player because there’s more time — we’re not in a win-now mode. Theres also the advantage of having control over the player's development at an earlier age

College coaches have conflicting duties in developing players while also winning. Whats best for the team may not always be what’s best for the player.

In general, for a HS player to be taken higher than a comparable college player, the scouts have to think that he has a higher ceiling.

but kba's point is huge

you’re getting a play that’s 3 years younger and you can then influence and monitor his development. What a college coach wants to get out of a player in order to win a conference championship or compete in the college world series or whatever may be completely different and even contradict with what will make that player a successful professional.

college baseball is substantially better than high school baseball. Only a very small percentage of high school players go on to play college baseball, so it’s really the best of the best (even at sub-Division 1 levels). The games really don’t even look that similar.

Everything's faster

The leap from HS to college in any sport is unimaginable. I’ve seen 2X state champs from MD go sub-.500 in their first year of D2 competition. Everyone’s bigger, faster, stronger, and has seen it all. Or at least thinks they have. College players will be exposed. HS pitchers, especially, can get away with a lot of bad stuff in their delivery and mental approach that won’t be exposed by HS hitters.

I used to tell my HS wrestlers after they’d win but make a ton of dumb mistakes in technique or match strategy, ‘You can get away with that here, but that shit won’t work on the other side of the Bay at States." Goes about 73 times as much for high school to college.

It’s a much faster game all around. Faster pitchers, faster baserunners, faster fielders. Also everybody is bigger and stronger – more power, harder hit balls, better arms all around the field.

It’s also just that everybody’s a better baseball player. In high school you see tons of stupid mistakes and can do things like trick plays and first and third plays that work all the time, but you really don’t get that in college.

And EVERYONE on a college team is good, to a degree.

In HS, you’ll run into middle infielders that can’t hit their weight, or OF that are athletes that never played before HS and couldn’t hit the correct cut-off man if their lives depended on it. You’ll get the 3B who’s only on the field because he’s the only one that can make the throw from 3B to 1B with no hops. Happens all the time in HS.

In college, EVERYONE on that team was most likely among the top 1-3 players on the HS team, maybe in their HS conference. The 1B isn’t the 1B just because he’s the token fat guy that can hit. The pitcher has more than just a 85 mph fastball. And the outfielder will throw to the correct base almost every time.

HUGE differences.

I have been teaching HS for 17 years this year

And man, if you saw some of the kids I’ve run out there in singlets for my wrestling team just to fill out my roster…

I've been actually embarrassed at some of the lineups I've had to put out there....

but you work with what you have. And sometimes, kids surprise you. Sometimes it takes a few years, sometimes even all four years, but sometimes, just sometimes, you get a kid that goes from not being able to tie his shoes without falling over in 9th grade to state placer as a 12th grader.

Actually had that happen 3 years ago. Kid came out as a freshman because his dad, who left his mom a decade ago, wrestled in HS. So out he comes, 5’5’, 145 lbs of goo and ADD and attitude. Seriously, fell over tying his shoes the first practice. I’m breaking up fights in teh lockerrom becomes anytime anyone messes with him, he blows his top and starts swinging. I get him 5-8 matches his freshman year, since he’s about 5th string JV at his weight. Loses everyone of them by headlock in the first period. Everyone. That’s hard to do.

10th grade, comes back out, 160 lbs of goo, but lifting a little. Loses every match by headlock until JV tournament at end of year. Says, “Fuck it, I’m throwing a headlock” (literally, that’s what he said to me as he walked to the center to start the match) goes out, throws a headlock on his consolation match opponent and pins the kid. First win after almost two full seasons. He’s stoked, mom’s crying for joy.

Junior year, he’s 215 lbs of muscle – growth spurt hits, he shoots up to 6’2". Goes .500 on varsity, BARELY makes it to Regionals, beats the #5 kid in the state in 1st round with a headlock. Doesn’t make it to states, but he’s stoked.

Lifts like a madman before his senior year, comes back at 215, pretty ripped and 2nd strongest kid on the team. Goes 20-8, qualifies for states, and headlocks his way to a 6th place finish. All from starting out as 145 lbs of goo who couldn’t win a match for almost 2 full seasons. Sometimes, just sometimes, it happens.

It also can happen the opposite way which is incredibly frustrating.

I had a kid who started for varsity as a freshman. 6’2’’ lefty hitter and thrower with great velocity and movement and power as a hitter. I thought for sure he would be a potential draft pick by his senior year. He worked his ass off in the weight room and gained like 30 lbs of muscle, but for some reason really never got any better on the field.

Weird how different people develop.

It's a crap shoot, for sure.

We’ve got one like that on our team now. Came out as a freshman, 5;9" and 160 lbs of ripped muscle, beast on the FB field as JV as LB. About 1 month in to wrestling practice, it dawns on us – this kid has zero lateral movement. None. Couldn’t go sideways if you paid him to. No one had worried about it in FB, because he played run coverage, so he just went straight forward 10 feet or so and decleated people. Wrestling? Not so good. If you can go sideways, you’re gonna get taken down. So we went from projecting him as a 3 year starter to wondering if he shouldn’t just do the off-season lifting program with the FB team. And FB is now thinking he’ll probably never start for them. Sometimes, good athletes just don’t get better.

This post makes me feel like if I stuck with baseball I could have played in HS.

As a lefty, though, I guess in the field I would have been in the OF or bust. So, maybe not.

Alas, there's no going back in time to fix that!

The last position I played in Little League was catcher. Why did I play catcher? To this day I could not tell you why someone thought this was a good idea. But I can tell you that there was not a catcher’s mitt to go on my right hand. Also, my dorky-ass Rec Specs did not fit under the mask. And that has a lot to do with why my Little League days came to an end. Because seriously… that was not fun.

Man, even wrestlers wear contacts.

Don't know.

Nobody ever suggested contacts to me until after I was in high school, and my sports-playing days were over by then… not that that stopped the PE teacher in 9th grade (and also the wrestling and outdoor track coach) from telling me I should come out for wrestling and outdoor track.

I didn’t wrestle because I saw guys running around wearing trash bags trying to cut weight and I decided that wasn’t something I wanted to be involved with.

by Eat More Esskay on Aug 17, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

And you were right to do so

Thankfully, under new weight management rules, that stuff is history. A minimum weight for the season is calculated within the first week of practice, you can only descend 1.5% per week now, and any wrestler caught with trash bags and the like by an official or the other team on the day of a match can’t wrestle. Not saying it still doesn’t go on, but it’s much less than it used to be. The days of kids crashing down two weight classes (10+ lbs for light kids, even more the higher you go up) for regional and states is over.

I was a good pitcher, but because of the rules, you could only pitch for two innings at maximum. I was bad to average at every other facet of the game, so I decided to stop playing.

Story of my life...

I never threw hard, despite being taller than everyone from the time I was 12. It worked to my advantage, as the first time I went through a line-up everyone thought at some point I’d have to lay down something over 75 mph. Nope.

Worked all through HS, didn’t go so well trying to walk on at Maryland, lol.

by TerroristFistJab on Aug 17, 2010 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Same for me

I didn’t throw hard, but pitched through HS. Built like a pitcher, 6’3" and broad shoulders. I had great control of 3 pitches, just couldn’t throw hard. The other parents of guys on my HS team kept telling me to try to walk on at Rutgers, but I wasn’t going to make a fool of myself walking into a D1 tryout throwin a 62 mph fastball.

by tflach2 on Aug 17, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I walked-on...

and lasted through the first weekend of cuts. Then I had to start proving I could at least hit a little bit. Fastballs, off-speed = no problems. Sliders? Not so much.

62...65...68

I dunno, it was 12 years ago. All I know is I didn’t throw hard in comparison to the other guys on my team. But I did have a good ERA, mainly because I threw strikes and could throw 3 pitches over. I was good enough to play in my small town, but not good enough to embarrass myself by trying to pretend I was Div. 1 college talent. That was the point of my story.

by tflach2 on Aug 17, 2010 6:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Depends on the school.

Mount St. Joe? Not so much. Rural public schools? Much better chance.

And yeah probably more breaking pitches and better control of the breaking pitches. In high school if you have a breaking ball that moves a decent amount you can basically bounce it and guys will swing at it most of the time. In college you have to at least show that you can throw it for a strike.

I always found that...

even as a soft-tosser, if you got a guy to 2 strikes in my HS league, if the off-speed or breaking ball in the dirt didn’t get them, the fastball at the eyes would. Of course, you have to have a competent catcher to do that with, but still..
