Recaps of yesterday's loss can be found at The SunOrioles.comSchool of Roch (with post-game Showalter), and Seattle P-I.

Orioles: Manny Machado to be introduced Sept. 3 or 4, join GCL Orioles on Sunday
Manny Machado will take his physical today or Friday, then head to Florida to begin games with the GCL Orioles. He will get a Camden Yards intro in early September.

Hernandez will not return until September | orioles.com: News
"David Hernandez (left ankle sprain) has started throwing at the Orioles' Spring Training facility in Sarasota, Fla., but manager Buck Showalter said he doesn't expect the reliever to return until rosters expand in September."

Johnson could return by month's end | orioles.com: News
"Orioles reliever Jim Johnson will throw back-to-back rehab outings for Class A Advanced Frederick beginning Friday, and he is thought to be at least a week away from returning."

Izturis wants to stay with Orioles - Carroll County Times: Orioles
It might best serve Baltimore to bring back the light-hitting, strong-defending Izturis. And if that’s the route the Orioles choose, they’re in luck because Izturis said Wednesday that he wants to re-sign with the club. "I would like to," Izturis said. "Now it’s a group of people here that they want to win and yeah, I’ve had two years here, a good experience."

Star-divide

Brown, Adam Jones still see things eye to eye - The News Tribune
Adam Jones gave his former minor league manager a warm welcome and vocal support when they met this week before Monday's game.

Showalter faces off vs. Rangers for first time | orioles.com: News
"Orioles manager Buck Showalter swears there won't be any feelings of déjà vu when he looks around the field at Camden Yards on Thursday and sees the Texas Rangers in the opposing dugout."

The Schmuck Stops Here: Orioles resurrection: Still a work in progress
"It's pretty obvious that the Orioles are a better team today than they were two months ago, but they still do things that make you want to tear out your hair. Like a strange little span in the fifth inning of last night's game when Luke Scott and Adam Jones combined to get nine consecutive pitches out of the strike zone from Mariners starter David Pauley and swung at five of them."

Baseball’s Golden Age: Right Now - Forbes
"Nostalgia holds that the 1950s represented baseball’s golden era. They didn’t. Thomson’s famous ninth-inning, final-game homer off Ralph Branca to give the New York Giants the 1951 National League pennant over the Brooklyn Dodgers occurred in front of 34,000 fans in the 55,000-seat Polo Grounds. These days, can anyone imagine a post season game played in front of 19,000 empty seats?"

Conley starts to feel at home with Frederick - The Frederick News-Post Online
Brian Conley was having a good year at Delmarva, but the real reason he was promoted to Frederick? They were down to two active outfielders. Last time I checked, you need three.

American Chronicle | Narron adjusting to life as a professional
"For now, Connor Narron's life has a simple routine: wake up and play baseball." That's not a bad schedule at all.

it's a pretty sweet deal I think

My buddies used to go fishing, gambling, beach, etc in the later afternoon/early evening after the games. Then just get to sleep early and do it again the next day. Really a decent life.

yeah

although my friends had a decent time with no bonus. One of them was filthy rich and lived in his family’s beach house so probably not the best example, but the other guy didn’t have a dime other than his monthly check and had a great time. They both said the bonus babies and the guys who come down to rehab do a great job taking care of the rest of the guys. One of them was actually lucky enough to go out on a fishing boat rented by Pedro when he was down rehabbing/prepping with them.

Damn, that was really well written.

Buck Showalter clearly isn't interested in having Anthony Rendon as a member of the Orioles.

by BaltimoreSportsFan on Aug 19, 2010 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions

I was actually thinking about that this morning

How much of a free pass are we going to give Buck for the sac-bunting? I thought last night’s was pretty indefensible. Looking at what Daniel wrote, it dropped our win expectancy by 6%, which is a huge difference. The least he could have done was bring in Corey to do it. Corey is a lefty with more speed than Lugo, so he would have had a better chance of beating it out, and the M’s most likely would have had to play him a little more straight up, since he’s a better hitter than Lugo. Lugo barely even jogged halfway down the line.

Also, some of his quotes are starting to concern me. He told Crasnick that he would rather see Nick hit 10 HR’s with a .300 BA than 30 HR’s with a .260 BA. That sounds like the anti-Adam Dunn movement all over again.

“The home run column doesn’t concern me,” Showalter said. “Would it surprise me to see Nick hit 30 next year? No. Would it surprise me to see him hit 10 this year? No. If he hits 30 home runs next year and hits .260 and doesn’t have as many doubles and strikes out a lot more, I’m not going to like that a whole lot.”

by Strat12 on Aug 19, 2010 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

In that context, I COMPLETELY agree with Buck

he doesn't mention walks

and if he starts K-ing a bit more and loses some doubles to hit 30 HR’s, I would be happy, as long as he keeps up the walks.

by Strat12 on Aug 19, 2010 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions

I know a K is just like any other out

But if K’s are up and avg is way down, walks probably dont stay and OBP is probably going to suffer a good bit.

"I have seen the future and his name is Matt Wieters." Keith Law

by Reddrummer9187 on Aug 19, 2010 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I completely disagree,

if his K’s are up, he’s probably looking at more pitches, which likely means his walks will also be up. Not to mention the fact that if he’s hitting with more power, pitchers will be more scared of him and try to pitch around him more.

It most likely doesn’t make a difference though, because most of the time when players see big power jumps, it comes from doubles turning into homeruns. So, his K’s will probably stay pretty close to the same, he’ll hit a few more fly balls than line drives, so his BABIP will drop, and his walks will probably go up because pitchers are more scared of him.

by Strat12 on Aug 19, 2010 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

Do you know of any place...

that breaks down the outcome (2B, in this case) with their hit type (LD, FB, etc.)? I’d be curious to see how many of Nick’s doubles have been fly balls.

by TerroristFistJab on Aug 19, 2010 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

this is the best I could find,

it would take a while to go through the whole list and organize it, but they have every batted ball type and outcome listed there

http://www.fangraphs.com/statsp.aspx?playerid=5930&position=OF&season=2010

by Strat12 on Aug 19, 2010 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Now you're getting into Three True Outcomes territory.

There is that class of baseball player that is a power hitter who’s selective about what pitch he wants to try to drive for a home run. His strikeouts will be more likely to be looking than swinging, and he’ll take walks if he doesn’t get run up by the ump. When he does get that ball to drive, home runs and doubles happen.

I mean, look at a guy like Adam Dunn. .266 BA with 150 K? Not impressive. But .352 OBP, that’s not tops in the league but we’d sure love to see a team full of guys with .352 and up. That’s higher than everyone not named Nick Markakis and Luke Scott. Dunn’s slugging .560 and that puts his OPS in top-15 in MLB. Luke Scott is #10.

But since we’re talking about Nick Markakis and whether or not he should try to be one of these players, I say no. I just don’t think that’s who he is. Until this recent slump he was hitting over .300 with an OBP in the .390s (last day both of these were true was July 18) and I like that with 10-15 HRs better. We can find another guy who’s probably a DH/1B type to be one of those 30-40 HR, 200K players.

I'm not saying he should change, I love Nick,

but his walk rate looks like AJ’s over the last couple months, and his power right now isn’t near good enough to make him worth his contract. Again, not to be the debbie downer, but his June and July numbers look like his numbers from last year. If he goes back to his numbers from last year, he better start hitting some HR’s, if he goes back to walking and OBP-ing how he was from April-June, I will have no complaints.

But the point of this is, that Buck didn’t mention anything about his walks or OBP, all he wanted was the batting average to stay around .300 with 10 HR’s instead of .260 with 30 HR’s.

There’s nothing to be done from a roster point of view, he’s just got to take his lumps like a man and take advantage of any mentoring he can get.

but i’m not completely sold that he’s worthless. He’s been basically the same hitter this year as last year if you normalize his BABIP, and while his defensive numbers have fallen off a cliff, I think they can bounce back a little and he could be worth 1 WAR or so next year. If he’s willing to take a paycut (unlikely) I would rather have him up here than Andino or whoever else we might take a flier on.

Again, I don’t necessarily want him back, but if he comes cheap he might be our best choice.

the point is NOT that a punch was thrown in training camp. It’s that a guy who was the center of a huge media shitstorm because he punched somebody national TV last year is the one who threw the punch and then the head coach didn’t seem to make the connection.

This

is also the coach who had a player stomp on another dude’s face in game….
Granted, he ran the dude out of town last year, and he did a bunch of talking about how he would punish Haynesworth if the NFL’s suspension was too light, but ultimately did nothing more.

I would say that he probably realizes that Blount’s getting cut regardless. Honestly, he looked like shit against 3rd stringers the other day. And again, these things happen all the time. If he hadn’t punched some dude after a game in college, it’d be just another training camp scuffle.

Of course it's far more defensible

but you’d think that somebody as media savvy as an NFL head coach would be able to understand that the fact that the player who just punched somebody in training camp created a massive media shitstorm last year by punching a player on an opposing team and so brushing it off as no big deal might not be the best idea.

Clemens to be indicted

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/top-posts/breaking-roger-clemens-to-be-indicted.php

After a nineteen month investigation, an announcement is expected soon — possibly as early as today — that a federal grand jury is poised to indict Roger Clemens for lying under oath to Congress when he denied taking performance-enhancing drugs. The specific charges are not yet known, but they likely involve, at the very least, multiple counts of perjury.

yup, Calcaterra notes this.
Many of Clemens’ statements are exceedingly difficult to square with known facts and common sense. At the same time, many of the witnesses against Clemens already face credibility issues, Brian McNamee chief among them. Even if you believe, as I am inclined to, that Clemens was not truthful during his Congressional testimony, convicting him of perjury will be no easy feat.

Unless the Feds have a card up their sleeve, it’s not looking good for them.

I'm not sure which it is, honestly.

The Blago case certainly shows that there can be a lot of daylight between convicting 90% of defendants and returning guilty verdicts on 90% of counts.

However, I believe they are going to retry some/all of the 24 counts, because it’s not that the verdict returned for many of them was not guilty, but that there was no unanimous verdict returned, which means mistrial.

That's a fair way to look at it.

You’re basically saying that the deterrent effect has already been achieved, and I think that’s probably true.

It’s stepping out of the fed realm, but that’s the same sort of thing we went through with Sheila Dixon in Baltimore. It was like, once they had her out of office that was doing the public a service, and it sent a message to others that they will go after you even for shit as tawdry as that gift card thing if they can catch you doing it.

Really corrupt politicians piss me off extra as a former government major because it fucks with the system that actually isn’t terrible most of the time. So I’d say I’m kinda vindictive. Haha.

BTW, a big reason that the feds’ case against Blago was not as strong as it could have been is that the prosecutor basically had to indict before he had built the full case. He had that wiretap on Blago and someone in his office leaked that to the Chicago Tribune. So the prosecutor (same guy who ran down Cheney’s chief of staff Lewis Libby for “Plamegate”) gets a call from the Trib that they’re running this story tomorrow, will he comment? And about all he can do is hang up, say “Fuck” a lot and bang out an indictment on whatever he’s got. Which apparently wasn’t much, despite how many counts there were.

Not very responsible civic decision on the Trib’s part, I feel, as they basically blew up that wiretap. If the goal of investigative journalism is to root out that kind of corruption, why put a scoop out that is counter to that goal? I dunno. So it goes.

Yeah

the deterrent effect and the punitive effect have both been handled as far as I’m concerned. It’s hard for me to justify a longer than 5 year prison sentence for what he allegedly did.

And yeah I get that the prosecutor was rushed, but that’s the way it is. I don’t see much evidence that it’ll go any differently the next time around.

But I saw that the Reds DFA’d Micah Owings the other day. I never understood why that kid was a pitcher. He has a career OPS of .861 (that’s 80 points higher than Carl Crawford’s career OPS, btw, and yes I am aware of the small sample size but 184 career ABs isn’t that small), and that is without spending too much time in the cage and only hitting once every 5 days or so. Which wouldn’t be that big of a deal if he could pitch worth a damn, but he has a career ERA of 5.11. Is it too late for him to be another Rick Ankiel?

But Ankiel has a job in the bigs

even after he came down with Chuck Knobloch “Can’t throw the ball straight” Disease.

At this point, I think its obvious that Owings is not a ML pitcher, and at 28 there isn’t much room for improvement on the mound.

But if you project out his career hitting numbers to a 480 AB season, and he is a 27 HR 100+ RBI hitter… I think we could use a guy like that. I’m not saying we should pick him up off waivers and stick him at 1st base next year, but I am saying some team could take a flyer on him, stick him at A ball, teach him a position in the field and he could be up in a year or so.

After the O’s savaged him for that entire series in 2008 you’d figure he might have been toasted. But he’s been pitching for the Braves last year and this year. He’s appeared in 41 games, thrown 31.1 IP and has a 2.30 ERA.

Also he’s been on the DL because he got mono. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5476695

Careful who you share drinks with, EOF.

I'll buy that man a drink anyday

EOF (am I the only one who read “End of File”? I sure hope not) is my patron saint, he drinks for free in my house.

Heavy Seas might well be the country’s best brewery

Heavy Seas Loose Cannon is one of my favorite brews.

You should sign up for the mailing list

They have events throughout the year of all different types. They got my name because I go to Beer, Bourbon and BBQ every year.

IIRC, the last Heavy Seas event before this one was chili and cheese instead of bacon.

This feta and cucumber salad i'm eating was really good a few minutes ago

now all i can think about is how much better it would be with some bacon

I'm gonna pretend I'm Dave

Who wants 10 plus bacons?, one is gross enough but ten, seriously, ten? 10 different varieties of crap.

Buck Showalter clearly isn't interested in having Anthony Rendon as a member of the Orioles.

I don't think the tribe is known for its good taste in bacon.

No offense, kiddo.

Oh dear lord

I LOVE heavy seas (I guess… I loved Clipper City plenty though and can’t get either up here), but bacon? That’s the best and worst of my world in one place. I want to go so bad, but I know i’ll vomit from the smell alone.

i know math is hard and all

but i’m fairly certain that 55000 minus 34000 does not equal 19000. did someone already mention this? cause i’m not reading this entire thread.

quote: “1951 National League pennant over the Brooklyn Dodgers occurred in front of 34,000 fans in the 55,000-seat Polo Grounds. These days, can anyone imagine a post season game played in front of 19,000 empty seats?”

Yeah, that was pointed out a few times in the comments

Just occured to me

Mon. night’s walk off bunt win happened on Earl’s 80 birthday.

Wonder what he thinks about that.

He's probably OK with it

since it won the game, and didn’t even give up an out.
