Jeff Nelson's wikipedia page.. who here is responsible?
"On August 20, 2010, Nelson is credited for ejecting Nick Markakis of the Baltimore Orioles for the first time in his career. Markakis was ejected for complaining balls and strikes. The pitch Nelson called a strike was 4.8 inches off the plate."

good stuff in the history
On August 20, 2010, Nelson added to his distinguished legacy by calling what some believe to be the worst-umpired game of the 2010 MLB season to that point.
On August 20, 2010 he removed any doubt that he was able to fairly call a game handing the Texas Rangers a game over the surging Baltimore Orioles.
On August 20, 2010 he became the least popular umpire in Baltimore.

current version
On August 20, 2010, Nelson called three strikes against the Baltimore Orioles’ Nick Markakis in the same at bat. The Rangers’ [[CJ Wilson] threw four pitches, each of which appeared to be increasingly low and outside. Markakis, having never swung the bat, was called out, and complained as he headed back to the dugout, earning him his first career ejection.

PFX agrees, somewhat
The last pitch was obviously punishment for previous jawing

why do we still have umps/refs anywhere? basketball is the only sport i understand why they’re still around, which is so they can properly fix games for David Stern. Baseball and football (even including holding penalties and all that nonsense) could be called completely by video just as fast and much more accurately

there'd be no legend of earl weaver or bobby cox without an umpire
and we may have well lost in 1996 even if they got the right call on the jeffrey meier fake-homer.
so, we need umpires to protect our egos when our teams don’t do well.
Your explanation for nba refs is hilarious by the way.. (and very true!)
Maybe Jeff Nelson uses old video of the strikes often called for Greg Maddux to
hone his strike zone skills….back in Maddux’s Atlanta days, anything within a 1/2 a foot of the plate was routinely called a strike due to his “famous control.” Many of the calls for Maddux were a joke as were the strike calls on Nick.
We can only hope Nelson isn’t behind the plate when the Os are involved in an important game.
