I just downloaded WordFued
which is a scrabble-like game that you can play against people you know, or just random people. You just select “Play with Random Opponent” and it’ll connect you to a random person who has the app running, and then you start playing. Then you take your turn and when the other person takes their turn, it’ll notify you in the notification shade and then you can take yours. It’s like chess-by-mail, kind of.

It isn't even that
he just looks at sports as a straight up business, with no emotion involved. If you were to look at sports as a stock holder and not as a fan, he’d make sense. He says it only makes sense to pay attention to the Yankees and Lakers of the world because they are the best of the best. Everything else is a waste of time (which, of course, is money). The problem is he puts down the fan mentality, which just happens to be the only thing keeping his company in business and in turn keeping him employed. He’s a narrow minded asshole. I don’t think it’s Maryland hate, I think it’s more of an obsession with the big city lights.

even though I was just thinking that the term sociopath is tossed around a little too freely for my tastes, I choose to label Cowherd a sociopath all the same. If the power grid fails tomorrow, he’s the kind of guy you’ll want to avoid at all costs.
Cowherd was here in Portland OR before hitting the big time.
He’s a perfect example of a slick talker who figured out the fast road to fame is to create controvesy. In a society that valued good manners and integrity, the guy would be lucky to have a job cleaning toilets at the local radio station. But we are not living in such a society. Appearance trumps performance and time in the spotlight is valued more than time put towards creating something of real worth.

he was putting up the best FIP's and xFIP's of his career this season before he got hurt
His ERA was ugly, but he only pitched in 9.2 innings, which makes it kinda pointless. He’ll never put up that shiny 2.23 ERA like he did in 2008 again, but he can definitely be an above average reliever.

2 things with Mahoney
1.) He’s coming off of 2 poor seasons with Delmarva, and a 23 year old in A+ without much success in A- is not going to get much buzz.
2.) He has had some crazy high BABIP’s this year. In Bowie, he’s put up a .396 BABIP, and since he’s a huge guy that hasn’t shown a tendency to hit a lot of line drives, that is very unlikely to be sustainable.
He’s definitely taken a huge step forward this year, but he needs to prove it’s not a fluke before he starts getting a lot of attention from prospect-watchers on the national stage.
not that unheralded prospects making good are rare
lots of star players didn’t make the top 100 prospect lists. He’s worth keeping an eye on, but a skeptical eye for sure (like any minor leaguer)

It’s ridiculous just how many problems are caused by making laws overly complicated and including loopholes in them.

Hahaha, sorry.
I would hope and assume that you’re one of the good guys, but there are a ton of lawyers who are in it just for the money and whose main ethical guideline is “What’s best for me?” Of course, there are plenty of people like that, but lawyers are one of the few that directly try to take money from one person and give it to another. There’s a reason why being a lawyer was considered a dirty profession until a few decades ago.
Plus, civil lawsuits drive me crazy, because it’s just massive redistribution of wealth and doesn’t create any. (No, I’m not using that phrase to start a political argument. Please? :P) Of course, I don’t generate any wealth in my current (government) job, either… ugh.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
I argue it isn't lawyers.
If you stop to think of it, an extremely large percentage of rules and laws that exist is due to some asshole (or assholes) who decided no rules apply to them and they can do anything they want or at least anything they can get away with. So it is us the people who are primarily at fault.
If you want to go second order, it is politicians, who constantly have to justify to their constituents why they should be in office. What better way to do so than to be on record as introducing some new law or regulation that “will prevent problems (or tragadies, plug in what ever term you want) like this to ever happen again.”
Lawyers have to stand in line behind these two groups. (Although most politicians seem to be lawyers, so maybe you have a point afterall.)

This is the line that floored me:
One of the county’s loans is particularly egregious. According to the Miami Herald, J.P. Morgan gave a $91 million note – $80 million of which will go toward construction – that from 2041-47 will cost $118 million per year. In all, the county will spend $1.2 billion to pay off $91 million.

When people got mad...
at Seattle for not doing “all it could” to save the Sonics, I always pointed out deals like the above (and the bullshit that is the Nationals deal with DC, and so on) as my reasoning.
As a coincidence, I read a book not too long ago about what a bad decision it is for state and local governments to offer tax breaks and other public pledges to woo businesses – the amount of economic growth is dwarfed by the debt service required by these deals.

Was it the one mentioned in the article?
"It’s not that teams need new stadiums, either," said Neil deMause, whose book "Field of Schemes" blew the lid off ballpark boondoggles. "They need new revenues. It’s really just a bailout. It would be cheaper to just give the teams the money. But then it would just look like a handout. The stadiums have become part of the business model for teams."
"I got a good Christian raising and a 8th grade education / Ain't no need in y'all in treating me this way." - Billy Joe Shaver
No...
but I should check that one out too. The book I read was pretty stuffy and had a very literal title, something kind of boring. But it was very interesting. The author was going over attempts to lure some large tech companies to Rockville, with the other option for the firm being Austin, TX. His point was that no matter what MD did to convince them, the choice came down to where management wanted to live.
by TerroristFistJab on Aug 26, 2010 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions
This only refers to the Sonics and their request to get a new arena.
The taxpayers funded new stadiums for both the Seahawks and the Mariners (Qwest & Safeco Fields).
The Sonics never stood a chance for a publically funded venue. The state of Washington was looking at a billion in budget shortfall, with both King County & City of Seattle in similar messes. Yet it did come surprisingly close. I believe they almost had a deal that would have covered about half the cost.
But if it hadn’t been for the economic picture, the odds would have been pretty good that local poloticians, with state help, would have signed off on such a deal.

One problem I see with that logic.
With socialism, we have to have more politicians and government employees. Who do you think is primarily responsible for the stadium situations in places like Miami and DC?
Sure, Loria may be a greedy dirtbag more interested in earning a few more million every year than contributing to the improvement of living quality in Miami. But none of it would have happened it local government didn’t make it happen.
Personally, I’d like to see more teams following the Green Bay Packer model. Unfortunately I think all of the leagues have now passed by-laws prohibiting that. (And thinking about it, it is a bit of a socialist model of ownership.)

I like the Green Bay Packer model a lot.
It’s unfortunate that the leagues — or really the owners once you think about it — are so greedy. But such is life.
I'm back. YAY SUMMER!
Depends on how...
you view the politician/voter relationship. The Nats deal was something that Tony Williams had to sacrifice a lot of his time and energy to complete, all the while with members of the City Council looking for hand outs from the Mayor’s office in exchange for their support.
When the council proposed a measure that would require 50% private financing for the stadium, MLB stopped promoting the team and said flat out that they were going to look for another market. At that point the city had no choice but to capitulate to MLB’s demands, or else risk losing everything.
The pro leagues know they have localities by the balls with this stuff. A lot of people were wary of the Wiz/Caps moving into Chinatown but that project turned out well. It helps that Abe Polin was a hell of a guy and built the stadium with his own coin, of course.
