I've done an awful lot of thinking

I want us to go out and get Prince Fielder this offseason. I know there are several other big sticks who can play 1b but I think he would best fit this team. If webbed that true cleanup 40+ homeric guy our lineup would immediately compete in the AL East. These young pitchers all seem to be on the right track. We may have to give up one to get Prince though. Imagine the everyday lineup of: 1.Roberts 2.Pie 3.Markakis 4.Fielder 5.Jones 6.Wieters 7.Wiggington(DH) 8.Bell 9.Izturis. I’m just not sure what it will take beyond a pitching prospect to get Fielder. I was thinking Tillman, Luke Scott, and another average prospect.

by Oyeah on Aug 28, 2010 8:49 AM EDT via mobile reply actions

So, Luke Scott....

the only guy we have with a shot of 30 HR this year, doesn’t make the 2011 Orioles lineup? Why trade the bat you have to add a different bat? We need both!

Prince Fielder: 141
Luke Scott: 146

Luke's not a FA...

Wigginton is though, isn’t he?

What up?

by snakethejake on Aug 28, 2010 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions

It's a pointless endeavor...

He’s going to enter free agency after next season; it’s what all Boras clients do. The O’s would be trading away valuable pitching for only 1 guaranteed season of Fielder. Wait until he hits free agency and then see what his price is.

yup. this.

fielder wouldn’t put us into the playoff conversation in 2011, so why even throw away any players on him?

I totally want to see that

Buck Showalter clearly isn't interested in having Anthony Rendon as a member of the Orioles.

Guys, tell me I'm not the only one

who doesn’t want Ty Wigginton back next year (unless it’s strictly on the bench, and even then he’d probably be overpaid).

You're not the only one.

If Wiggy has a big role on the team next year then something’s gone wrong. Like you said, Wiggy as bench player is fine. Wiggy as every day 3, 4 or 5 hitter is not so fine.

Too many Shortstops ?

I realize that SS has been a weak spot since Ripken retired, and that many young athletes pitch and play shortstop simply because they are the best athletes on their HS team. With the Orioles cutting back on the number of minor league teams (they dropped Bluefield), don’t the Orioles have alot of shortstop prospects? Where are they going to play them all? Machado, Narron, Davis, Givens, etc. all are signed as shortstops. Narron may be moved to 3B. That still leaves a few too many. Might one be groomed to replace Roberts at 2B? Or is that hoped to be Adams or Hoes?

Even if Joe Mahoney or Townsend become the 1B of the future, the Orioles still need a real first baseman for 2011. Dunn or Fielder would be ok with me, but I think Konerko is the best option. I think he is a free agent, too. Wigginton is not the answer.

by fuddnelson on Aug 28, 2010 4:11 PM EDT reply actions

Well the system was pretty bare of shortstop prospects before this past year or so

So no, I don’t think we have too many. Getting them all playing time at different levels could be a challenge though like you said.

by kba26 on Aug 28, 2010 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

I also wouldn't say we're 'cutting back' on minor league teams

With the addition of Aberdeen in ‘02 and the reactivation of the GCL Orioles, Bluefield became redundant. So while we do have one less team, I don’t think the system is necessarily weaker for it.

by kba26 on Aug 28, 2010 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Bluefield certainly isn't redundant

This is the first I’ve heard about this, but it wouldn’t be a good thing for us to not have a team in the Appy League.

They just announced it today

Why would we need two rookie level teams? 6 minor league teams seems pretty standard.

by kba26 on Aug 28, 2010 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, the GCL isn't a competitive league

The GCL is more like extended spring training with stats. I’d much rather lose our GCL team. The Appy League is more of a genuine minor league.

Did anyone on our current roster play at Bluefield?

Or anyone likely to be on our roster next year?

Clipped for tomorrow

Andy never rules out a Rookie team somewhere else – just not Bluefield. Aside from the GCL, it’s the furthest from Baltimore of any affiliate.

Worth noting the GCL Orioles team plays out of the minor league complex in Sarasota.

So there’s already some reason to have a more extensive presence there.

Bluefield = 6+ hours from Baltimore by car. I think from a logistical standpoint it just outlived its usefulness. That’s a bummer, but that’s life.

Also

The Baltimore Sports Report guy still thinks Miggi is on the team. Nitpicking I know.

by NSOsFan on Aug 28, 2010 4:15 PM EDT reply actions

I think you're just misreading the sentence
As for the rest of the Oriole free agents, I would be surprised to see them go out and bring back Miguel Tejada or re-sign Kevin Millwood

I interpreted it as first as him not knowing, but i think he means bring him back from San Diego just like you can say they brought him back from Houston.

by kba26 on Aug 28, 2010 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I was more thinking of this...

Forgive the lack of block quoting thingy:

“The Orioles have some interesting gaps in their roster to fill and a number of free agents on their team. We know for certain that around the MLB trade deadline Showalter had expressed interest in holding on to Ty Wigginton. Wiggy will be a free agent after this season, as well as Julio Lugo, Miguel Tejada, Kevin Millwood, Koji Uehara and Mark Hendrickson.”

It made me think that he was pointing at only Os UFAs.

by NSOsFan on Aug 28, 2010 7:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Hm

well it is technically true that he’s a free agent, but i see your point. I think its likely just sloppy writing than an actual error.

Anyone own an AJ minibobble?

I just got mine in the mail today from ebay and AJ comes off the base. It looks like it might be designed that way, but it might also be broken. Just wanted to know before I email this guy about sending me a broken bobble.

He does come off the base

I found out the hard way: my GF opened the box and set him beside me on my desk. I went to pick him up, expecting to pick up what I perceived to be a heavy bobblehead plus base, and I ended up accidentally throwing him across the room while the base stayed on my desk. He shattered into about four pieces.

ahahahahaha

should have known AJ would come off the base. more realistic that way. he should come with a pickoff move too.

Cast iron's great for certain applications, but it has some serious limitations

Its reactive with acidic foods and takes forever to heat up and cool down so you cant really cook thing that require quick temperature changes. I much prefer stainless steel and aluminum for most applications.
