Saturday Bird Droppings
Duck is on vacation for...I don't know, a million years, so it'll be me doing the Bird Droppings from now until I die. You should know in advance that I'm very bad at getting up early. I'll try to do it though, for you. That's how much you mean to me.
Recaps! I don't know why you'd possibly need more than the gem written by Eat More Esskay, but if you do, check out MLB.com, The Baltimore Sun, and The Chicago Tribune.
Z on TV: Buck Showalter: A TV ratings magnet for MASN?
"The Orioles, which were averaging a 3.3 household rating in the Baltimore market prior to Showalter's arrival, surged to a 4.5 rating for the three games they won this week. And the ratings jumped to 5.6 Thursday for the game that gave Baltimore a sweep of its series with the Los Angeles Angels." Z on TV goes on to mention that means the O's outdrew any broadcast TV show during the same time period. (duck clipped this one, but let me add that since Showalter's arrival, our traffic has seen a significant bump as well. Buck rocks. -Stacey)

Steve Melewski: Adam Jones on outfield positioning
Jones said anyone feeling that he positions himself where only he wants and ignores input from his manager or coaches is just wrong. "That's very wrong. I'm not insubordinate. If they want me to play at the wall, I'll play the wall. I'm playing comfortable, where I feel going the back the wall is a good distance from me and coming in the infielders are a good distance from me."

Steve Melewski: Not good news on Erbe
The Orioles did not get good news on right-hander Brandon Erbe. While O's president Andy MacPhail would not confirm exactly what was found during an MRA exam yesterday, Erbe's season is over and he is heading for further examination. "It's not good," one team official said.

KEYS AND DASH SPLIT DOUBLE DIP | Frederick Keys News

Stupid bar....
had the PHN v. MFY game on 1/2 the tvs and the Mets v. Phils on the the other half. And neither game was giving updates on the O’s…..grrrrr….so I just drank myself into boozy oblivion :-)

What channel was the Yankees/Red Sox game on?
The bar that I was in was showing it on MLB Network… and it was giving updates on the O’s. Nothing like watching a 55 inch TV, and staring at a 4 inch scrolling bar along the bottom.
NESN

Are the O's mathmatically out of it?
Not that I’m implying anything.

I still think if we run the table we wouldn't make the playoffs.
But at this point, until we lose, I think I’m going to put wild card standings in with the post-game. Y’know… just in case.

89 wins
probably good for 4th in the division. How scary is that?

Well, us running the table for this flight of fancy assumes...
…that we put 6 losses into each of the other AL East teams, because we have two series’ left against all of them. Plus they would presumably beat one another although I’m not yet so obsessed to check out what the rest of the league’s schedule is like for the sake of this exercise.
I think 89 wins might get us to 3rd in this scenario, ahead of both Toronto and Boston but still not into the playoffs.

i was thinking if it was even possible
To have three 90 win teams and one 89 win team in the same division. The concept of both us going undefeated AND three others making it to 90 wins is absurd anyway, but it sure is fun to discuss

Of all the hacks....
…in The Baltimore Sun newsroom, David Zurawik, of Z on TV “fame”, takes the Grand Prize for Most Debased Hit Whore. I’m surprised he looked away from what John & Kate Gosselin and Sarah Palin were doing long enough to notice something happening with the Orioles. Must have been a well timed press release email. Good job MASN PR.
I dunno, Peter Schmuck playing out a pro wrestling gimmick has to have him in contention.

Schmuck is an admitted doofus...
…and pro wrestling at least seems right up his alley.
Zurawik on the other hand is particularly bad as he constantly flirts with inflammatory political banter (a la Fox News, which he’s appeared on) to drum up traffic and comments. His excuse is that he’s a TV reporter and that politics is on TV. He also censors the hell out if his comments, and in the worst way – to keep out criticism of himself.
???
I know he censors his comments to remove profanity…
I read him semi-regularly & I see PLENTY of criticism of Zurawik in the comments section, particularly in his political commentary geared posts. They’ll bash Zurawik, the Sun, O’Malley, and MD in general pretty frequently if he steps off the entertainment beat.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
Nearly every comment area on the Sun's site is full of that sort of stuff.
It’s like… sheesh, get a freakin’ hobby or something.
Although the people who have baseball as their hobby and post in places like Schmuck’s blog need more than just a hobby, I guess.

Besides Faidley’s, where a good place to eat near the stadium? We’ll probably only catch a few only innings at the standing area.
Don't mess with the bull, young man. You'll get the horns.

Plenty a night I have looked judgmentally upon the parents that bring their children into Pickles. And on days when they card you, they just stamp your hand if you’re under 21.

The Gentile story has to be the feel-good tale of the year.
I know it was only $5K, but serving that up Lottery-winnings style for Jim was great.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
what with inflation and interest after about 50 years
i think the orioles made out like bandits, and somehow looking good in spite of it
Yeah, $5K is nothing to them, obviously.
But I thought about whether or not they should include the adjustment/interest… the contract says a definitive amount, so inflation is out of the question. Interest is another story, IMO, but I’m pretty sure MLB should pony up for that one. It was their error to begin with that cost him the bonus. Not that they will.
It gets less feel-goody if you start to think about the details like this.
Gentile & his family were thrilled, so I think we’re on the right side of karma at the very least.
From the Land of Pleasant Living...
The contract says a definitive amount to be paid at a certain time too, doesn’t it? If it’s not paid at that time why wouldn’t inflation be part of the equation? And why should MLB pay for it? It wasn’t the O’s fault that it was delayed, but they certainly got to keep the 5k and make investments with it. The current payment should reflect those investments.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
i really hope the mentor gets his shit together tonight

Anyone watching the tampa bay - toronto game?
Apparently the Rays have decided they’re recent hitting struggles are the fault of the bat rack, so before the game they’ve started taking all the bats out and throwing them on the ground and leaving them there during the game. It’s quirky things like that make me sorta glad that they’re doing well as long as we arent capable of competing.
The bat rack??
Oh that’s gold.

I’m too cheap to pay for MLB extra innings. Besides most of the time other games are on I’m watching the O’s so I don’t think I could get much out of it anyway.

Their rookie catcher J.P. Arencibia hit two bombs
One on the first pitch he’s ever seen, another later in the game.
He now has a slugging percentage of 2.200.
The Blue Jays are an absurd team on so many levels.
Just a random thought about MLB packages.
Ive never tried Extra Innings. But I think if I were to choose one it would be MLB.tv. I tried the free preview around the All Star break and I was pretty impressed. Plus they allow you to use your PS3 to stream the games and the HD quality was great.
That being said I cant watch baseball that doesnt include the O’s 24 hours a day. Hockey however I can watch all day every day no matter who is playing.

I get it
I totally get what your saying. With me it’s basketball. If the Wizards of the NBA or George Mason of the NCAA aren’t playing then I just can’t watch. I am as loyal a fan of the Wizards and George Mason as most but I don’t watch basketball unless they’re playing and the basketball season ends for me when their seasons end.
