Sorry I couldn’t be on yesterday’s game thread— it needed more college football talk, of course.

What, they hate it *more* than the Z-meister does?!?
(Z’s objection may be that it’s tougher to handicap than the NFL — which is probably true overall, and why I try to stick to a single conf I can track — until it expands to 34 teams, anyway…)

IDK how much zk hates it.
But every time I brought it up last week they basically told to politely STFU about college football. Or at leats that’s how I interperetated (sp?) it.

Hey open threads are open threads
Talk about whatever you like. That’s the point of an open thread.
And the one time I said something, it was more of a general comment on how college football dominates every media outlet once it starts.

I hate it easily as much or more than they do...
…but since I’m never around lately, you can probably talk about it without pissing me off.
But it is still a horrific exploitation of young men for the profit of despicable corporations run by heartless fucks who deserve to be sodomized with power tools. Oh, and it is pretty boring to watch as well.

Generally no...
….NFL games are typically played competently between reasonably well-matched opponents.

I think CFB is more exciting.
There’s so much more variety, in the NFL you’d never see a team operate solely out of Shotgun and pass 50 times a game or run the option, in college you see that. Plus if you’ve gone to a college that plays sports, there’s a connection that’s different from what you feel for the sports teams.

This is not variety. You’re making our own point for us.

No, i understand his argument
The variety is system to system. Watching a team that operates solely out of the shotgun every single week may be get boring if thats your team, but part of the fun of watching college football is that the odds are you can flip through the channels and find some strange offensive system you’ve never seen before. NFL offenses tend to be much more vanilla.
Ugh, why didn't I see that when I was typing.

I think there's a disagreement on what taken as variety
All of the NFlo ffenses are basically the same, the Saints may run the shotgun more then 49ers, but the offenses are fro the most aprt the same. You could channel surf on a fall Saturday and see the flexbone, the run-n-shoot, and the spread, channel surf on a fall Sunday and you see mainly the same offense.

This is true, but there’s a big difference between following your college’s conference/league and following the national juggernaut of CFB.

Look, I'm not trying to tell you what to like and what not to like
If you like college football, fine. But you have no more chance of persuading me to enjoy college football than you do of getting me to enjoy hobo boxing, particularly when college football’s events are all too often the equivalent of Railyard Pete vs. Floyd Mayweather.

Put it this way
The mean margin of victory for the top 10 college football teams in week one? 28.3 points.
That’s some compelling stuff.
To be understood is to be a prostitute. ~ Fernando Pessoa
Usually I agree with you
but I did enjoy seeing Maryland demolish Morgan State, mostly just because its been so long since maryland’s had a convincing win like that (even if it was only Morgan State)
The non-conference stuff is for the large part bad.
But it’s like the teams are having their own preseason. I don’t like that Bama is pounding on SJSU and tOSU is destroying Marshall, but they need to get guy their guys warmed up for the more important games vs. Wisconsin and Florida. Once it gets to October, if the top 10 teams are still winning by 28 points, they’re either really, really good or that conference is god awful.

Open thread is always fair game.
Game thread, it’s obnoxious to get constant updates about how Alabama/LSU/whoever is beating the Delaware School for the Blind by 30+ points.
That said, today’s the first real NFL Sunday and I won’t be surprised if a lot of that fills up the game thread. I’m not the final authority on it or anything, but for me, if all or most of your posts in a game thread are about a run-of-the-mill event in another sport and you’re posting constantly, maybe cut back a little. If you’re switching between games and you want to know what happened in the O’s game, I think it’s fine to say, “Man, Drew Brees just threw a great TD pass! I see the O’s are losing now. What did I miss?” If you’re posting the score of a football game every five minutes, that’s annoying.

Do we want to start setting a weekly NFL thread on sundays like we did for the World Cup?
I have no problem keeping the conversations separate if people would prefer that.
great idea
particularly given the CC Fantasy League and Pick ‘Em Pool. I’ll set one up.

yea
i’m in both CC fantasy leagues plus the pick ’em. i need a place to trash talk on you guys as i run away to sweet victory. minus of course week 1 of the pick ’em where i once again put too much faith in cleveland beating even the worst teams in football and atlanta playing for OT.
