GameThread: Red Sox (75-58) @ Orioles (49-84), 7:05pm
Boston Red Sox at Baltimore Orioles, Sep 2, 2010 7:05 PM EDT
Swaggering game thread posts are temporarily toast thanks to Hendo and Simon. I hope they go to their rooms and think about what they've done for a long time. I also hope that Buck has all the proof that he needs that they are not nuggets and never will be nuggets.
The Orioles will be looking to rebound from last night's defeat against Daisuke Matsuzaka. He's given up at least four earned runs in eight of his 19 starts, including four of his last five. Somehow even with that being the case he has a 4.19 ERA and a .233 batting average against. Maybe it has something to do with him walking 4.1 guys per nine innings. Of current Orioles with more than 10 PA against Dice, Nick Markakis has a .350 OBP (with only a .133 BA, yikes), and Brian Roberts and Luke Scott both have an OPS higher than 1.200. Then you count guys with less than 10 PA and you've got Matt Wieters (4-6, 1.833 OPS), and Adam Jones and Ty Wigginton with over 1.000 OPS. Hopefully that's a good sign. Jones isn't even playing, but let's not get bogged down by details.
Dice missed his last scheduled start due to back soreness, so he'll be well-rested for tonight. But as we well know, sometimes guys who are rested just can't pitch well because it's like they've forgotten, so keep your fingers crossed.
Pitching for the Orioles tonight is Brad Bergesen. 3E1N has lowered his ERA by 1.4 runs in six starts since July 26. That's the good news. The bad news is it's still 5.55. Yikes. If it is lower still at the end of tonight, then the O's stand a pretty good chance of winning this series. Unfortunately, Marco Scutaro, Adrian Beltre and JD Drew all have good numbers off Bergy. Maybe tonight will be different. We can only hope!
According to ESPN's game preview, if the Orioles win tonight, then Buck Showalter will become the 64th manager to win 900 games. Buck, you'll have way more than that by the time you're done with us. Go O's!

*Oh, and Jake Arrieta shaved his mustache, which I know is a big deal around here. He also lost a bet with catcher Matt Wieters that he’d keep it til the end of the year and had to fork over some money to him this afternoon.
Also, Matusz was the AL rookie of the year.
Bring back Luis Matos.
I knew there had to be some kind of bet riding on that stache.

I’m watching the game at work and it’s making me nauseous. I really don’t want to see Wigginton in the field ever again. He can DH but he should not be allowed to tote leather on to a field, unless he’s retrieving someone else’s glove. That was just so pathetically bad and I could see the Red Sox players laughing in the dugout. Of course, they could just be laughing at how awful the O’s batters’ swings have been against Dice K.

"I got a good Christian raising and a 8th grade education / Ain't no need in y'all in treating me this way." - Billy Joe Shaver
Sure - a good first baseman makes a great play there and picks him up
but jesus christ throw the ball 90 feet. Roberts had an easy play to make and he didn’t make it. Wiggy had a tough play to make and he didn’t make it. I can’t assign more than about 25% blame to Wiggy.
Rub some $100 bills on it, you sell-out. -duck
Nah, that's 75% Wiggy
THE BALL WAS RIGHT AT HIM. If the throw is over his head, or 6 feet on either side, then Wiggy’s not at fault. Yes, it wasn’t the greatest throw. But it was right at him. He’s GOT to make that play as a 1B.

You are absolutely right
but he’s been playing real good defensively lately, especially making some good picks to save Josh, so you would hope he would have picked that. That’s just the way it goes.
agreed but, no matter how you look at it
it went straight to Wiggy and he should of fielded it.

I just want to chime in
sacrificing Reimold/Patterson and putting the game in Izturis and Bell’s hands was an egregious managerial move. That is all.
...a piece of V mail in which everything but the salutation "Dear Mary" had been blocked out and on which the censoring officer had written, "I long for you tragically. R. O. Shipman, Chaplain, U.S. Army."
They made a good fight of it...
But the big early hole and bad defense was too much to overcome.
Buck Showalter knows way more about baseball than I do, but I thought to myself at the time after Wieters got on in the ninth that any sequence of pinch-running/ pinch-hitting that ends up with Cesar Izturis having to bat is not a good one.
It’s tough that the game came down to Izzy and Bell. I mean, we need to see what Bell can do, and at least he got it to 3-2. But Izzy striking out was as predictable as the sun rising in the east.
Maybe someone can ask Buck what he was thinking. I’d like to know, because it wasn’t what I would have done.
Bergesen walking 5 guys doesn't help neither
...a piece of V mail in which everything but the salutation "Dear Mary" had been blocked out and on which the censoring officer had written, "I long for you tragically. R. O. Shipman, Chaplain, U.S. Army."
I do feel like buck managed himself out of a tie game there
At the very least, let Reimold sac up and then you can have Scorey pinch for Cesar.
It's a bit cliched
But I feel like we snatched defeat from the jaws of extra innings.
