Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Tuesday Bird Droppings

Recaps of yesterday's win can be found at Orioles.comThe SunThe Boston Globe, and MASNsports (with post-game Buck).

Buck Showalter Injecting Discipline Into Young Orioles Squad - Across Enemy Lines - NESN.com
Well, Buck's first game was Aug. 3, not July 29, and a few of my words were changed just so the editor could justify his/her existence, but here's my take for NESN on what's different with the O's.

Orioles Insider: Arrieta may not have surgery after all; Lugo cleared
"Julio Lugo (recurring headaches) was cleared to begin playing again. The club isn't sure he'll make it to Boston in time for (Monday's) series opener, but he will definitely be available (Tuesday)."

What makes for a 'successful' stadium, anyway? - CSMonitor.com
"Stadium deals are notoriously one-sided: Clubs get revenues, governments pay costs. What has Baltimore gained - or lost - from Camden Yards?"

Adam Jones Is Never Room Temperature | FanGraphs Baseball
Adam Jones has had a roller coaster of a season. Like, Loch Ness Monster type of a season. The double screw turns kill me every time.

Steve Melewski: Ryan Adams had a big year at bat for Bowie
"(Ryan) Adams led or tied for the league lead in hits, doubles and extra-base hits and finished tied for 8th in batting average."

AROUND THE LEAGUE

Dugout disruption: Managerial changes could set MLB record - USATODAY.com
"People don't realize what a lonely job this can be," says Showalter, hired in July for his fourth major league managerial stint. "You do everything you can in your power to make it happen, to win, and be there as long as you can. "But I'm not naive anymore. I've learned this is a business. All you've got to do is look around and see what's happening out there."

Dodgers fans: you do NOT want Jamie McCourt owning your team | HardballTalk
"Her testimony today, if true, makes her out to be astoundingly dim for a trained and experienced lawyer, which is what she is. At issue is the big document in which she is alleged to have signed over the Dodgers to Frank.  About that: Jamie testified that she doesn't read legal documents.  Why? "They're boring," she said. The content "is over her head," she says." Orioles fans, just remember - it could ALWAYS be worse.

Who's the next manager of the Blue Jays? | HardballTalk
Toronto apparently has no freakin' clue who they want to replace Cito Gaston next year.

I get the feeling

they don’t pay their editors a lot, so they don’t get a lot in return.

For the record, I said I expected Adam Jones to stop hacking at low outside curves. No idea why they decided to change that word. And I said lowest ERA+, not highest ERA. Dumbing it down for those not versed in sabermetrics, I guess.

OK, a FEW questions

How old is he? (HINT: He’ll be 36 on Christmas Eve)

How much would it cost? (HINT: I’m guessing it will take at least $7M/yr for 2 years to get him back)

Have you looked at the trend of his ERA+, WHIP and HR allowed and HR/9 and BB/9 and K/9 and SO/BB ratio? All of those numbers for this year are among the worst of his career.

I’ll pass on Kevin Millwood.

you can't just look at a bunch of numbers

and say he won’t be any good next year. now that he’s had a year to adjust and figure out what it takes to be in the AL East (and you’ve seen how much better he’s been over the last month plus), he can really lead this pitching staff. You know, like Rick Sutcliffe did in ’92.

Says one of the resident stat geeks

I have NO FAITH in Kevin Millwood for 2011. AT ALL.

And as far as going off a month-plus, Larry Sheets ended 1987 on a tear. I thought he’d be AL MVP in ‘88. How’d that work out?

And Rick Sutcliffe had a 4.42 ERA with an 89 ERA+ in 1992. I’d like to think we can do better for our lead mentor than Rick Sutcliffe’s 1992 numbers.

"I think it just got country over here." -Tim Wilson

by duck on Sep 21, 2010 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions

But how did Mussina turn out?

How much better was he because of Sutcliffe’s presence? Would you give Millwood 7 million dollars in 2011 if it meant that 2012 Arrieta, Tillman, Britton, and Matusz would be that much better? I sure as heck would. And Tillman barely got to be around Millwood all year, so he in particular still has a lot to learn about being a major leaguer.

And I bet he would agree with me, since he plays the actual game and you don’t.

Ok, that was kind of fun

but in all seriousness Duck, I enjoyed your take for Behind Enemy Lines. And I don’t think the club needs to go find any starting pitching for next year (unless they trade Guthrie, which I am in favor of, if they replace him with Cliff Lee), nor any relief pitching (outside of re-getting Koji, which I am more in favor of than I should be).

Yeah, and if the queen had balls she'd be the king.

How pretell are we gonna swap Guthrie for Lee?

Since that seems far far far far fetched to me, I got the implication he was in favor of moving him.

Unless I’m missing something he was by far our most consistent reliable starter all season and has been a consumate professional around the younger guys. He may not be a #1, but he’s a damn good option to keep around this rotation IMO.

by Wieters Wieners on Sep 21, 2010 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

oh it's far-fetched

which is kind of the point. In all reasonable cases I’d totally take Guthrie for at least the next half-season.

The guy has been damn good again....

Already almost 200 IP with a WHIP of 1.19 and a BAA of .248.

Those are pretty sick numbers for someone “in decline”.

by Wieters Wieners on Sep 21, 2010 10:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm just concerned with

how good he’ll be next year and the year after, and it mostly stems from his K-rate moving south. Which doesn’t make him bad by any stretch. Lots of innings, respectable ERAs, I’ll take that while it lasts. But he obviously doesn’t have the future of our other guys, and obviously isn’t an ace kind of pitcher who ought to be on top of the rotation.

Strikeouts his past 4 years

2007 – 123
2008 – 120
2009 – 110
2010 – 108 (2 starts left probably)

For only 3M bucks this year he has probably given us one of the greatest bargains in the league. I’m a monster Guthrie fan both in his performance and the way he handles himself. I think he fits this team perfectly being that he is now getting more up in age and can be the type of mentor that Millwood can but alot less washed up.

I mean, we were talking about bringing Millwood back to mentor the young guys while sucking and making 7M a year. To me, GUTS is gonna be 32 next year and can fill that role for cheaper while running circles around Millwood on the mound.

This season would’ve sucked a million times worse if it wasn’t for my man GUTs.

by Wieters Wieners on Sep 21, 2010 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions

i'm with you

GUTS FTW. don’t really care about his “declining K numbers.” unless he strikes out nobody in the next two starts, he’s going going to be back near his 2008 K numbers.

but let’s not forget how bad he was last year and how mediocre he looked in the first half this year. That’s literally all I’m saying.

Gotcha

Last year was a depressing year for everyone. But that one year certainly gets diluted when zooming out and checking out his body of work for us.

Like I said, I’d love to see him retire an O. Even if his numbers decline a little over the next couple years, I think he’s a good consistent reliable starter. And as the younger guys get better and more confident, he won’t mind taking his turn later and later in the rotation.

by Wieters Wieners on Sep 21, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

Since GUTS has come to BAL

In 4 years:

761 IP
4.09 ERA

Talk about one of the most UNDERRATED pitchers in baseball. All that productivity we’ve gotten from him for peanuts.

I can't tell what to think of Guts.

I like him a lot, don’t get me wrong… have a jersey T-shirt for him and everything. But he’s an interesting case, because he consistently outperforms his peripherals. 2009 is the one exception, and unfortunately, saber-minded types are quick to point to that year as the real Guthrie.

But I don’t think you can dismiss the fact that he’s had three years (‘07, ’08, and ’10) of a 3.75-ish ERA despite a 4.5-ish FIP (and slightly higher xFIP). It’s a reason to be cautious about him, sure, but I really doubt that he’s just been that lucky for well over 500 innings.

One good sign about his peripherals? His walk rate is at a career-low 2.26 BB/9. I am concerned about the ever-dropping K rate, but if he keeps the walk rate that low, he doesn’t need a K/9 of 7+.

1) I presuppose that we could replace him with someone better.

2) I think he’s in career decline and would like to maximize my return.

3) I don’t think he’s a great pitcher right now, and I am not convinced that he’ll be able to handle the AL East from now on.

It's funny what becomes conventional wisdom

I mean, the questions about Adam Jones and Nick Markakis were puzzling to me. Statistically, Adam Jones is having almost eactly the same season he did last year in the aggregate. Nick Markakis’ average is down slightly and his SLG is down 30 points. It’s pretty obvious what the problem is. Do sports writers even look at stats pages?

And why in the world would anyone look at Kevin Millwood’s numbers and ask why we’d want him back?

It’s really cinema quality stuff. The cast is certainly movie quality, you get Michael Stuhlbarg (Larry Gopnik from ‘A Serious Man’) Michael K. Williams (Omar, duh) and Michael Shannon (Kathy Bates’ son from ‘Revolutionary Road’).

Every decade or so, HBO gives us something really special. For the ’90’s it was ‘Larry Sanders’, for the 2000’s it was ‘The Wire’ and this decade may just be ‘Boardwalk Empire’.

Its in the queue

The sudden explosion in tv premieres over the past 2 days has me seriously backlogged

which leads to the question, how close to the top of said queue should the Event be?

Was it good enough that i should move it up to the top, or just get to it whenever?

Yes good question

I would put it close to the top.

But it only has a couple of episodes to prove to me that it isn’t going to be a show like Lost. There was a lot of jumping back in forth in time, but I didn’t find it too hard to follow. If they give some answers instead of just piling on more mystery than I think the show has great promise, but they could easily screw it up. Plus the guys girlfriend is the actress who played Shia Labeuf’s love interest in Disturbia and she is hot.

Man, I hope the O’s let Kevin Millwood walk. If they go into next season with Matusz, Arrieta, Bergesen, Guthrie and Tillman as holdovers, and perhaps add a good starter in FA, they’ve got a shot at a pretty good rotation. The team still lacks a bona fide middle of the order bat, which they probably won’t get. But I can see them edging north of .500. Maybe.

Changing topics, that Red Sox lineup without Ellsbury, PEDroia and Youkilis is putrid. Lotta outs there. Lowell, Varitek and Lowrie as your 7 – 8 – 9 hitters is teh suck.

Way way OT

Any of the home theater-philes on here have any good recommendations for a 32" inch flat screen? I’m in the market for one and trying to make sense of it all. I love this stuff but I honestly have not kept up with it for a few years. I’ve been looking at some Samsung models, specifically the LN32C450 and 550. Any recommendations?

I have an LG at that size which I like a lot.

I got it back in January or February, so it hasn’t been too long since I looked at this stuff. Sounds like it’s hard to go wrong with Samsung TVs these days, though — they seem to come very highly recommended from pretty much every reviewer. If you’re looking at those two TVs, I’d probably suggest getting the 720p one. 32" is, from what I recall, a bit too small to really notice the difference between 720p and 1080p, unless you’re going to use it as a computer monitor as well (which is why I got a 1080p one). $200 seems like too a lot to jump to 1080p if you’re not really going to notice it.

Yeah

That’s what I’ve been reading – on small screens 1080p isn’t essential, and it’s even pretty hard to see the difference on a big screen. It seems the bigger difference is contrast ratio. I would like to use it as a computer monitor sometimes – does the text look fuzzy on a 720?

"Real Orioles don't pout. Real Orioles don't gloat. Real Orioles just win."

by NewYorkOriole on Sep 21, 2010 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I'm running at 1080, so I can't say for sure,

but while it’s definitely not going to be as sharp as a computer monitor, I don’t have any real problems reading text. Of course, if you’re just browsing the internet, you’ll probably need to zoom in on web pages a lot, since you probably won’t be sitting 1.5 feet from the screen.

What are you going to use it for while it’s hooked up to a computer? Just watching videos and such, or gaming, or…?

That's true...

I’m not really intending to use it for reading webpages anyway – maybe just for the mlb.tv subscription and the occasional Homeworld deathmatch…

If you're gaming, it probably depends on how powerful your machine is.

If you’ve got a good enough rig that you run (or could run) games at 1680×1050 or 1920×1200, then it might be worth getting a 1080p TV. If you’re at something more like 1280×1024 or 1440×900 (or lower), 720p might be enough.

For MLB.TV, though, 720p should definitely be enough.

Yes.

In a TV that size you will not notice the difference between 720 and 1080. Most people will tell you that an LCD over 42’’ and in plasma over 48-50’’ is when you can start to notice.

If you can get a 120 Hz refresh rate instead of a 60 Hz rate, do it

Quick primer on refresh rate

Until 36", you won’t be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080i, though.

Is this the phenomenom Im starting to notice at some sports bars.

The Greene Turtle in Leesburg got all these new TVs and I hate them. It looks different than every sports bar I’d ever watch. It just scans oddly or something. Its super clear but it feels like its like skipping in front of your eyes or something. Its hard to describe, does anyone know what Im talking about?

by Wieters Wieners on Sep 21, 2010 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

If it feels like it's skipping,

it’s probably not 120 Hz. 120 Hz smoothes things out a lot, so it should have the opposite effect.

could be

1080i vs 1080p. i is interlacing which is just a tad slower to build the image on the screen, while p is progressive, building the whole image ahead of time. Usually not that noticeable, but I imagine people do.

I told my builder if there was a single fluorescent light in our house, I wasn’t signing at settlement. Between the awful light color and the buzz they make in guitar amps, I won’t own one of the things.

The light color has gotten substantially better

The ones in my apartment are almost identical to incandescent bulbs. Cheap ones are probably still much too cold though. I suppose someone could make bulbs sufficiently shielded to prevent the buzzing, but its not really an issue for me. I like that i’ve been living in this apartment for over two years and have never had to change a light bulb.

It’s just that when I’m looking at a list of names on a computer screen and that’s the entire list, it’s hard to know anything. Although I don’t want an old doctor. Or a young doctor. I would like my doctor to be like…45 years old.

It was like finding a $15,000 necklace for $5 at a yard sale. The man was a walking medical encyclopedia and diagnosed my sleep apnea based on one conversation.

by Stacey on Sep 21, 2010 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

If you're Federal (which you are, right?)

it should be November.

Kaiser eschews reimbursing private physicians in favor of having Doctors employed in-house. Kaiser generally will have a network of facilities with varied services. The center in Columbia has a Pharmacy/Lab, Primary Care facilities, Pediatrics, etc. The facility in Woodlawn has all of the above and an OB/GYN, Oncologist, etc.

+’s:

1) One-stop shopping. You can schedule all your appointments in one facility (generally, my wife wanted a female OB/GYN and has to go to Woodlawn for this as Columbia hasn’t hired one yet), get blood drawn and have your prescription filled. Major time-saving can be had. Additionally there are 24 hour facilities available.

2) The website is the shit. It is so mystically simple to use, yet incredible powerful. I can refill presectiptions, e-mail my doctor, review my test results, get information about diagnoses, etc.

-’s:

1) More expensive – my wife is a Federal employee too, and this is one of the “premium” plans.

2) Hours at some facilities (read: the facility closest to you) are small, so a person who commutes from Columbia to DC and back has to ask someone else to pick up any medications for me as the pharmacy closes at 5pm.
