Should Adam stay in CF?
What's up with Adam Jones in CF? It seems that he isn't reading fly balls as well as last year and most certainly isn't making the big plays that we were used to seeing . I have always been a big fan of Jones and I really want him to reach the SuperStar potential that I think he will soon be. It just seems that he really needs to drastically improve his fielding abilities.
Sometimes I wonder if Showalter has picked up on some of his fielding blunders and discussed his concerns off the field. You rarely hear the coaching staff comment on his fielding mistakes. Am I missing something? Does anyone else pick up on some of these fundamental errors.
I think that Felix Pie and Adam Jones should finish off the rest of the season competing for the CF spot. I would really like to get more of a look at Pie and how he handles the middle. It just seems to me that Pie has more of a jump on the ball and displays more open field speed towards the gaps.
On a positive note, Jones really does look 100% better hitting the ball then he did in the month of April and May! I think he has the potential to be a solid 30HR/100RBI batter year in and year out.
Please, let me know what you think.
Lets go O's! Keep on improving and continue this onto next year!

Absolutely
Jones at a corner outfield position just isn’t that valuable. At 25 he’s not perfect out there but I think he’ll be fine.

I don't know
I think his bat has the potential for LF. It’s obviously of more value in CF, although if he keeps making mistakes out there it’ll cancel it out.
I don’t think it would be a bad idea to consider moving him, but I don’t think it will happen.

The question is whether the rest of the league realizes how bad his D has been this year...

I don't know if i'd be happier with him in LF or CF
CF keeps his value at a maximum (if we were to cinsider trading him), but he could potentially be a well above average defensive LF and Felix could actually be better in CF than in left. However, I think that his bat having the “potential for LF” is moot when we are talking about the same 2 guys (Felix and AJ) being in the lineup regardless.

well you aren't really
the initial configuration is Pie/Jones, but moving Jones to LF says that if Pie doesn’t work out you need to find another centerfielder, and if Jones doesn’t work out you need to find another left fielder. And Pie is very much an unanswered question. So if you don’t think Jones’ll hit enough to justify keeping him in left over some more readily available options, then you’re kind of wedging yourself into a bad situation.

I woul never assume
that Stacey would think Pie might not work out in center. Losing Felix is NOT an optiopn.

I think that Pie's bat is the only question
This is also kind of an answer to Rube below. We’ve all seen Felix’s adventures in LF this year, but when he was playing CF consistently at the end of last season when AJ was hurt he looked really, really good out there. His glove isn’t a question at all in my mind, but I’m not so blinded by my love for him that I think his bat is a sure thing.
One thing that Brady Anderson was saying this year during one of his broadcasts made me think of Felix, although I believe he was talking about Corey Patterson (as well as himself during his playing career). He said that while CF is the toughest of the outfield position, if you have the physical tools to play out there then it’s easier than either of the corner OF positions. Something about not having to worry about the angle of the ball off the bat because it’s heading straight for you and just being able to run and run all over the place and not have to deal with corners and things like that.

that was last year though
i thought he looked better in LF last year than this year too, so i can’t go ahead and say he ought to be playing CF after not playing that well in LF this year.

Is Pie really the answer?
If Jones were to go to left, I’m not totally sure that I would want Pie to be his replacement in center.
"'And worse I may be yet. The worst is not so long as we can say 'This is the worst.'"
I think Jones is the CFer.
Concentration and focus are all he needs to improve. He has the ability and I think Buck will improve his approach. To me, Pie is a real question mark. An enigma even. Pie has lots of talent and tools but hasn’t seemingly learned how to channel them. With his speed, he should be stealing bases, but he doesn’t seem to know how. His instincts in left field scare me too. I remember watching Surhoff play left field (and he wasn’t originally a LFer) and how he hustled to back up 3rd base on throws. I’ve not seen Pie doing that sort of thing. Personally, I think Pie could be everything that Carl Crawford is, but he hasn’t learned how to do it. I would rather put Reimold out in left field or even Luke Scott. They hit for much more power and field just fine for left field. I say trade Felix Pie this winter while his value is up some. I’m not convinced he will ever get better, for whatever reasons.
Luke in LF. /shudders

Chris: Yeah, it's great. It's Japanese and has those little warm water jets that clean the undercarriage.
Eric: Chris, it's a toilet, you shit in it.
Jones was originally drafted as a SS/pitcher...
…is he still capable of playing SS at the major league level? He’s got a much better bat than Izzy, but can he field? Then you could move Pie to CF (if he can play to his potential) and either get Crawford or have a Luke/Reimold/someone LF/DH by committee.
no
The last time Jones played short was probably six years ago, and there was almost certainly a really good reason why he was moved off of that position in the first place. No offense, but it boggles my mind when I see folks posit this as an actual potentiality.
"There's going to be a general lack of toast in the neighbourhood this morning. Many many bewildered breakfast faces."
Agreed
if there was ANY possibility he could play SS, he’d be there. A SS with his bat (and it’s potential) would be invaluable, even if it was paired with a below average glove.

Okay, didn't mean to sound like a moron...
Just curious when I happened to discover that he originally played SS. Been a lifelong O’s fan but only recently have really tried to get a thorough understanding of the game (sabermetrics, etc.) Guess I have a lot to learn!
AJ stays as is...
The problem with AJ is he was playing way to swallow in centerfield, plus he has a great arm.He can’t play ss in the bigs or he would have never been trade bait.Pie needs to work on his fdefense, but he is a wild card, you just never know what he’ll hit,but has made great strides this year.He does need to bunt more as does Jones when the defense gives it to them and both need to learn to steal more bases.I would re-sign Patterson.Jayson Werth would look great in left, but the price is going to be to high I would imagine….The outfield wasn’t the problem this year and won’t be next….
