re: Radio Deal

Not sure which station I would prefer carrying the O’s broadcasts – 105.7 sounds better, WBAL signal travels further. If you head north and approach the state line, there’s an alt rock 105.7 out of York that kicks in and drowns out The Fan. When I lived up that way, during the drive home from Baltimore there would be a ten-minute period where 105.7 would be a mess with both stations fighting for dominance before I got in range of AM1280 out of Hanover, PA. Meanwhile, WBAL would be strong the entire ride.

yeah

my family lives right on the mason dixon line and simply can’t get the Orioles on the radio. Which totally sucks for them (I myself have the mlb at bat app so I can listen to anything from anywhere, but I picked that up because I was living in upstate New York)

WBAL has the old school nostalgia, but I think I'd miss the clear FM signal after a few years of 105.7.

If WBAL gets the contract, they’d better bring back the cheesy “feel the thrill of baseball on WBAL” spots.

Pretty fascinating stuff. I love stories like that from distant O's fans.

That’s another thing that’s been lost with the change over to 105.7. There’s benefits that are more tangible, sure, but I guess I’m always susceptible to being swayed by a little sentiment.

Longoria and Price whining about attendance at the Trop...

..will not do them any good. I just moved back to MD from St. Pete, and it’s just not a baseball town. Full of mostly old Yerkees fans and rednecks. They’ll all jump on the playoff bandwagon and dye their hair blue and bring out those obnoxious cowbells, but the fervor dies down real quick.

Also, the economy is a nightmare in much of FL, so bringing your family to a ballgame can be an expensive endeavor out of reach to a lot of folks in an area of near 20% unemployment. We don’t all make a MLB player’s salary. I think their complaints come off as rude and arrogant.

by OsNBohs on Sep 28, 2010 8:44 AM EDT reply actions

I disagree

if it had happened to the Orioles I’d personally be more than a little dumbfounded, shocked, and maybe even angry. And I’m not one of the players. I can’t imagine any player grows up hoping to play in the playoffs in front of ten thousand fans and one vuvuzaela.

"There's going to be a general lack of toast in the neighbourhood this morning. Many many bewildered breakfast faces."

by Andrew_G on Sep 28, 2010 9:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I'm not saying it's not disappointing...

…but there are plenty of factors that make it not so unexpected. The economy is a big one. Florida is getting hammered by this recession, and while there are plenty of rich folks in the Tampa Bay area, there are way more lower/middle-class folks who may be priced out of a night at the park. I’m not sure how high their TV ratings are to judge how many folks are just staying home and watching.

Second, the Rays have no real history to speak of, so there’s not an established fan base. Compound this with the fact that a large portion of the population in the area come from ‘somewhere else’ and bring their existing loyalties; as is the case with all the old Yerkees and Sux fan retirees from up north. When I lived there from 2006-2010, I didn’t jump on the Rays bandwagon; I stayed an O’s fan.

So there is an explanation for the dearth of attendance, and I think it will take a while for them to turn it around. I’m sure OPACY would be filled to capacity if the O’s were contending, and we’d be shocked if it weren’t, but they have a fairly unique situation down there.

by OsNBohs on Sep 28, 2010 9:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Im with Andrew on this one

I’d be livid. You’d think the town would get behind their team whether or not its a ‘baseball’ town or a ‘football’ town. I’ve heard the tickets to their games are SUPER reasonable anyway so I’d hardly blame the economy for a Dad not taking his boys out to a game and grabbing some $12 tickets to watch what might be the best team in baseball.

by Wieters Wieners on Sep 28, 2010 9:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Again, I'm not saying it's not a crappy situation.

But, there are reasons. I’ve lived there and have seen it first hand. I see a lot more MFY and PHN bumper stickers than Rays stickers. People at work get all fired up when the playoff bandwagon comes to town, but the rest of the year the Rays are almost an afterthought except for a core fanbase of natives and converts which is rather small.

by OsNBohs on Sep 28, 2010 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh. My. God.

I am more excited for this show than any show ever. If you like zombies, you’ll check it out. However, the books were and continue to be some of the most well written graphic fiction I have ever read, and the series looks amazing regardless if you are a comic book fan, zombie fan, or neither. Oct. 31st. AMC. The Walking Dead.

BTW, if interested (and you should be) the 1st 48-ish issues are collected in the Walking Dead compendium vol. 1. It’s expensive, but it’s amazing.

I want to be excited about it

A lot of other people are (pretty much everyone on the internet). But two things I can’t get past: 1) what I perceived to be a poorly shot car chase at the beginning of the trailer and 2) this poster:

I guess I initially approached it the wrong way: I was looking at it as a realistic portrayal of a zombie apocalypse instead of a strong, character-driven story that takes place after a zombie apocalypse. So the side of me that wanted realism was screaming, “no one drove on the wrong side of the highway to escape death and destruction? Really?!?” And that side overshadowed the voice that was saying, “it’s just an image meant to evoke a feeling. It’s just boilerplate to complete the setting. If the story, writing, and acting is good, what does it matter?”

So, anyway, I’m going to give it a shot.

by PhilR8 on Sep 28, 2010 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Dude, I almost had water squirt out of my nose...

I was laughing so hard at your observation and the very annoyance over the fact that everyone just waited patiently in line in their cars despite the apparent “zombie apocalypse” instead of breaking a traffic law.

But my question would be, isn’t there a barrier there in the median? How were they to get to the other side of the intersection in their vehicles?

by Wieters Wieners on Sep 28, 2010 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

This is true

I mean, you could easity drive up the wrong way of an exit to get on the other side of the highway, but once you are on, you’re fucked. At least until one of thoe emergency vehicle openings.

Yeah, I dunno

I would assume some evacuation plan would go into effect where people would be diverted onto the oncoming lanes. Or if it were me, I’d notice that no one was on that side of the road and just go the wrong way down the exit ramp. I doubt I’d be the first, or the only one doing this. Remember the movie Deep Impact? Decent movie, I guess, but towards the end of the movie when everyone is evacuating the VA beaches, cars are headed west using both sides of the highway and it still was gridlock. What I would’ve done if I were creating that poster is I would’ve had cars cramming up both sides of the highway and the horse walking down a grassy center median. Or something like that.

But I’ve decided it’s just a minor niggle, even though it still makes me twitch just looking at that poster.

by PhilR8 on Sep 28, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I like the word niggle

though ive never heard it and think it might be offensive in public.

But yea, it’s promo art. Who knows if they even asked the writer’s or director’s opinion?

Have you ready any of the series?

While it doesn’t deal 100% in reality, it does take a heavily “every day problems” approach. But anyway, the writing is fantastic (as is the art, but i’m guessing that won’t translate) and if they do right by the series, it can’t fail too hard.

I’ve been let down before though (I’m looking at you, Mr Romero), so i’m trying to contain my glee. It’s not working so well though.

I never read the series, other than a cursory flip-through at Borders

I like graphic novels, but I’m scared by series with a zillion issues. I usually stick to TPBs like Watchmen or one-offs like DKR, etc. I’m not a huge zombie guy (as in I don’t devour everything about Zombies) but I’ve read books from Brian Keene and consider the original Dawn of the Dead to be one of the best movies of all time. I know it’s setting the bar kind of high, but if this series captures the vibe of the original Dawn of the Dead, I’ll love it.

I read up through the Governor storyline

it was great, great stuff as far as comics go, but I would expect a tv show to hopefully branch off and be its own thing. You know, use the medium and its different scales and also adapt as they discover which characters/actors work and which don’t and so on.

I’m super excited for it.

They said they want to show going as long as the series is alive. Sounds like they are gonna follow the story pretty closely.

It’s one thing for Brian Roberts to wonder where the O’s fans are when the team has been in the toilet for so long. These guys are going to the playoffs.

Jim Duquette and Kevin Kennedy were talking about this on XM radio the other day. The remote location of the Trop is a common excuse among Ray fans. The Trop is located in St. Pete which is a “40 minute” from many locations in Tampa. Poor babies. Heaven forbid they have to drive 40 minutes to support their team. For the SoCal teams, a 40 minute is pretty much the norm for a lot of the fans, but plenty of them support the Angels and Dodgers if their team is hunting a playoff spot.

Seminole Hard Rock Casino will probably be our Home Base most of the time.

Here's my list:

Go to Brocato’s or The Floridian and get a Cuban sandwich.
Go to Tampa Bay Brewing in Ybor City and drink beer. Party in Ybor after dark if you’re feeling adventurous.
Go to the International Mall, get lunch outside, and look at the wimmin.
Go to Caddy’s at the beach, drink beer, look at the wimmin.
Go to the USF football game at Raymond James on Saturday.

Pretty fucking awesome. Also it was a serious home game for the Phils – seemed like 80-20.

I couldn't decide whether I cared about the attendance during the game.

The Nats played like absolute garbage (including once of the worst plays I’ve ever seen by Dunn). I was happy for Halladay too – it was a fucking dominant performance. If it wasn’t for the Nats total incompetence it could have been a lightening quick game.

Roch:
Koji Uehara has struck out 39 batters without allowing a walk in his last 29 appearances over 31 innings. It’s the best stretch of strikeouts without a walk in the AL since Pedro Martinez fanned 49 batters in 2000. The Padres’ Luke Gregerson had a streak of 41 earlier this season in the National League.

That, friends, is absurd.

If Koji strikes out 39 batters without allowing a walk in his last 29 appearances over 31 innings, but he does it for a team other than New York or Boston, will anyone ever know?

The Bergy stats in that same story are crazy, too
Brad Bergesen has posted a 2.31 ERA in his last 10 starts covering 70 innings, and he’s left nine of those games with a lead or the scored tied.

Bergesen has allowed three runs or fewer in nine of his last 10 starts and has worked at least seven innings in six of them. He’s also won his last three decisions on the road, and seven of his 12 outings away from home have been quality starts, including the last five.

In his last five road starts, Bergesen is 3-0 with a 1.49 ERA over 36 1/3 innings.

he was too bad to be that bad

There was no way he could go from what he did last year to the crap he was dealing in the beginning of this year. Since Buck, he greatly exceeded my improvement expectations. I agree with duck, a back of the rotation guy that will not get much attention but still give the team a chance to win when he pitches.

by Philly O's on Sep 28, 2010 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah

I’ll definitely take a solidish back-end dude…but there is just a nagging feeling everytime he pitches that he’s simply built a house of cards on a moving train. I guess I’m just saying that I won’t be surprised if he reverts back to bad bergy and goes the way of Daniel Cabrera.

Don't you feel less like that now that he's throwing 93?

I definitely felt like that every time he pitched (even last year) when it was 89-90, but shit he throws strikes and keeps it low and at 93 that’s pretty solid.

Even bad Bergy won't quite go the way of Daniel Cabrera.

Bergy still has command even when he’s off, generally speaking. There are never going to be any 10-walk, 10-strikeout Bergy games.

But when he’s bad he is a 5+ ERA pitcher and that’s not so good. I do think the Bergy we’re seeing now can give us something in the range of a 4.50 and eat some innings, and that’d be OK with me.

$1.7M raise? For some who performs well, that's pretty standard.

I mean look at Papelbon’s or Soriano’s raises under arbitration. Of course, Koji is a third year player… I imagine the O’s can’t just renew his contract like a normal third year. I’m guessing he’s eligible for arbitration as if he was a free agent.
