that is a beautiful sight
it may be a mirage, but it sure calls to me out here, lost in the desert for 13 years
Has there ever been a cooler Oriole than Eddie Murray? I mean, just straight up cool. Like a bad, suave dude. You know what I'm sayin'. COOL. SC 7/24/08
obvious but worth saying anyway...
Every team in the AL East has been over .500 since August 1. Any other divisions boast that, I wonder?
Probably not, since the AL East spent August beating up the rest of the league.

The Orioles do that sometimes in the Spring
But this late in the season? Oh it’s so beautiful. It’s so bright and vivid. Oh my god!
makes you wonder if that'll carry into next season

A .617 winning pct. over the span of a fifth of the season
against TB, Chi, Bos, NY, LAAAAA, Tex, Cle, and Sea. Nothing to sneeze at.

The sample size is getting larger...
You can shrug off 10 games as an aberration, and you can say “correlation does not imply causation” at 20 games. We are up to 34 games now. That’s 21% of the season.
The best 34 game stretch pre-Buck was 14-20. We are 7 games better than the best, hand-picked sample size we could muster over 100+ games.
I know we have all been hurt before by having the audacity to hope that our team won’t suck anymore. But it might be time to tear down some of those walls that we have put up that keep us from believing that anything good is more than just smoke and mirrors.
I dunno
I still can’t even figure out if Berg is a 3rd starter or organizational depth going forward. There’s still alot to learn about this team.

I think he's somewhere between what we saw last year
and what we’ve seen this year. I can see him as a solid 4th starter next year with a 10-14 record and 4.35 ERA on a decent Orioles team.
Then again, if all of the talent develops like we hope they all develop, those numbers might not even be good enough to crack the rotation by 2012.
even when he isn't pitching his best
i’d take him as a 5th starter.

To this, yes...
Considering that he has now pitched some very good games against above average competition over the course of his career, I’d say 3E1N is very capable of delivering towards the back of the rotation.

I still think Bergesen can be a 14-10 pitcher
as a #4 starter.

I agree completely.
On a team with a legitimate offense he could post a few 12+ win seasons. Considering how hittable he was early this year (that debacle early against TB comes to mind before his demotion), I’d be happy with that.

well not entirely arbitrary
manager changes can have significant effects sometimes. look what happened to the capitals after bruce boudreau took over for glen freakin hanlon. they made the playoffs!

That run they went on down the stretch...
was pretty epic, IIRC. I remember sitting in a Tax Law class and using my computer to follow their games wondering when they would hit a wall. They won the SE Div too, which is pretty amaing.

well the SE sucks
a major reason they won it was because the only teams they played down the stretch were SE division teams. it was still an amazing turn-around tho

Gotta beat the teams...
you play, right? After the debacle in Montreal this year, I’m very nervous about this season.

They were
the one team I didn’t want to see in the playoffs. I hate watching the Caps play them.

Hot Goalie...
good home team, it was pretty much the last squad they wanted to play. That said, when you’re up 3-1, you better close out the damn series. But, this is the Caps we’re talking about.

yea
def didnt wanna play montreal. they played us incredibly tough during the season and were one of the few teams to limit our incredible scoring.

Fucking "hot goaltender"
How the fuck do you run into a “hot goaltender” every fucking time you’re in the playoffs since 1987? At some point, maybe it’s you.

dunno about the others
but halak was awesome. he dominated the caps and wasn’t much less dominate against the penguins.

Yea
taking 40+ shots a night and only getting 1 goal?
Game 1: 47 shots —> 2 goals
Game 5: 38 shots —> 1 goal
Game 6: 54 shots —> 1 goal
Game 7: 42 shots —> 1 goal
The worst part was, the more shots taken against Halak, the better his record was, and if this series was any indication, the better he played.
Per http://bleacherreport.com/articles/385842-canadiens-capitals-jaroslav-halak-leads-montreal-upset-over-washington
By shopping 41 shots in game 7, Halak pushed his record when facing 40 or more shots to 10-0-1 this year. That is a staggering stat that shows that this is a man who thrives off of being busy in the crease.

Well, part of that is
that typically teams take more shots when losing, so a goalie would probably face more shots in wins then losses. Still, 40 shots is a lot, and to play that well is amazing.
I could be wrong
but I’m of the opinion that the Caps take a lot of shots period. But I certainly understand your point.

The Caps do take a lot of shots.
One of the surprising things at the end of the regular season was that, though a good team should have a positive shot differential regardless of what I said above, the Caps and Blackhawks dominated shot differentials even though they led most of the time. And as Behind the Net showed, the Caps absolutely dominated the Canadiens in shots that round, but Halak played out of his mind.
Only being 18
I’ve only seen the Capitals in the playoffs in the 2000s, so I don’t know about before that. Regarding the current team, no one said anything about a hot goalie against the Flyers or the Penguins. It’s undeniable that Halak played amazing that series. According to the statistical blog Behind the Net, the Caps should have won that series, as should have the Penguins against Montreal.
Now it sounds like I’m making excuses. I don’t care if the Caps would have won that series 9 times out of 10, you don’t let that 1 time happen, dammit.
Well I'm 42
and I’ve seen the Caps choke in the playoffs more times than I can count, going back to when Reagan was president and 4 OT against the Islanders on Easter Saturday-Sunday 1987.

Also 1985
Won 1st 2 games of opening round vs Islanders & lost series. But I suppose that doesn’t qualify as hot goaltender. Smith was just better.
The whole “ran into a hot goaltender” started in 1986 vs Rangers & Johnny V. and was confirmed vs Kelly Hrudey in 1987.

Oh yes,
I’m more than aware that the Caps playoff history has been one of disappointment and heartache. And even though I’m a pretty big hockey fan, I’m wary about getting my hopes up this season, no matter how well they play during the regular season.
I'm done believing in the Caps
The Caps in the playoffs have been Lucy with the football since 1987. I’ll enjoy watching them, but I’ll never actually believe they can win The Cup until Red Jesus is lofting it over his head.

I can understand the feelings...
I started as a fan during the 90-91 season, and got years and years of playoffs with no payoff, then the Finals appearance, than the suck and the firesale, and now the ride back to the top. Every time I hear an announcer talk about how impossible a 3-1 series comeback is (regardless the sport) I always think “you must not follow the Capitals”.
