"I've seen him since, I've talked to him; the only difference is I'm not going to be at first base, I'm going to be at home plate," Joyce told the Associated Press. "Apprehensive, but also kind of excited about it, really, to be honest with you."
Showalter a stickler for BP etiquette - Newsday
"Showalter did not like a group of Yankees pitchers playing catch in the outfield during Orioles batting practice and personally did something about it, according to sources." I wonder whether Joyce will give Galarraga

Lou can email.
I have yet to read the whole thing, but here’s a sample:
“Again I’m standing at the edge watching the drawbridge close on another chapter of my life. A range of emotions flow through me as I stomach this ship leave without me. Still the monkey without an arc :/ But no worries, been there, done that, on to the next challenge head first.”

They're certainly mixed enough.
And I have no idea what “monkey without an arc” means.
…Unless he means ark, as in Noah’s…? Ship leaving without him…

Duck, I should have used the phrase, “excellent for a ballplayer and not for an essayist.” Lou was drafted right out of high school in PR. He sounds like and intelligent and likeable young man. We don’t get much in the way of thoughtful introspection from our professional athletes, and I enjoyed the change from the “we play them one game at a time” commentary.

It's the little things
Orioles manager Buck Showalter is known for his attention to detail. One of those details crept up in the outfield Monday morning at Yankee Stadium.
Showalter did not like a group of Yankees pitchers playing catch in the outfield during Orioles batting practice and personally did something about it, according to sources.
The feisty manager walked all the way from the third-base dugout…
Orioles manager Buck Showalter has remained mum on exactly when Arrieta or any of the O’s young arms will be done this season, because he wants them to focus on each outing and not be distracted.
Two things that I think would be different with most other managers.
I really like what I read about Buck more and more. He’s head and shoulders above any manager I’ve seen in years in terms of his attention to the details around the game. A bunch of little things add up to one bigger thing, which is a change of attitude, and a different way forward.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
true, but...
it is one thing to come into a situation and evaluate and change things, and an entirely different thing to go into spring training having helped mold the situation and have more investment and less “new sheriff in town”. Buck’s been great (and helped out with the fantastic pitching run), but I’m a little (just a little tiny bit) worried/curious to see what he does next year.
...a piece of V mail in which everything but the salutation "Dear Mary" had been blocked out and on which the censoring officer had written, "I long for you tragically. R. O. Shipman, Chaplain, U.S. Army."
i'm expecting him to bring the same attention to detail to spring training....
….and I’d think a lot of things will be very different than they’ve been in the past. And i’m looking forward to seeing the differences when the team comes north.
"I put a pepper rub on the scallops so you have a little contrast. You have sweetness from the coconut oil and little acidity from the splash of lemon." – Luke Scott
Ah, so Buck kicked them out?
I was wondering why they were out there to begin with, and then why they disappeared. Wish I’d seen Buck do whatever he did; I guess I was finding my seat at the time.
"You can't sit on a lead and run a few plays into the line and just kill the clock. You've got to throw the ball over the damn plate and give the other man his chance. That's why baseball is the greatest game of them all." -- Earl Weaver
I like Buck so far
I certainly will always applaud attention to detail. And the pitching has been TERRIFIC since he’s come on board. I think they’re pitching a touch above their heads but I am very hopeful that the young guns will take a big step forward next year.
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
Even with a recent slump, Pie, 25, is batting .274 with five homers and 20 RBIs in 63 games, and he has been a bright spot in a difficult season for many of the organization’s young players.
Really? We’re going to point to a batting average and label .274 as a bright spot? I love Pie as much as the next person, but he’s playing just well enough to earn more playing time and keep flames of hope alive for future development. His performance has hardly been a bright spot. Below average offense (OPS+94) and averagish defense (-1.9 UZR in the OF) doesn’t qualify as a bright spot. He’s been essentially a replacement level player (0.0 WAR on baseball-reference, .1 WAR on fangraphs).
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
It usually takes three years of UZR data to accurately judge a player's ability
I wouldn’t read too much into 60 games worth
"There's more Met than Yankee in all of us"-Roger Angell
sure, i'm not using that number to represent his overall ability, only his 2010 performance
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
His point was you can't use that number to represent his 2010 performance
A single season worth of UZR data is statistically irrelevant.
Sure, that number had validity problems. His UZR may be function of him getting a lot of hard fly balls. Bad positioning advice, etc.. But that number is statically relevant, whatever that means, in that it’s accurately represents what UZR intends to measures.
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
But its widely accepted that UZR is not too inaccurate to be useful
without at least 3 seasons worth of data. Looking at just 2010 is meaningless.
how did what I said above contradicts what you said in any way?
Yes, the number of defensive plays in one season isn’t enough to measure performance. You need 3 years. But his 2010 UZR is what it is. I wish I could Litchman’s response to all the Teixiera brouhaha last year.
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
Nothing is WAAAY too strong
It’s a number that has problems. Sort of like using a 2 months of batting data has validity problems in measuring offensive performance. Would I use 2 months of batting data to make an accurate assessment of a player’s offensive value? Of course not. The same thing with one year’s worth of UZR data. But as the same time, those two months of batting data measured performance just like UZR although UZR is a little more susceptible to factors beyond the control of the players (which is bit true for batting stats as well but not as problematic) which affects the metric. Overall, I’m just saying it’s not a completely useless number.
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
Sort of like using a 2 months of batting data has validity problems in measuring offensive performance.
Actually, what I should be saying 2 months of batting has problems in measuring the player’s “true” level of talent.
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.
ah found it.
When a player has a good or great UZR in any time period, it does NOT mean that he is a good or great player and it does not even mean that he had a good or great year with the glove. What does it mean, you ask? Well, it doesn’t mean anything other than he had a good or great UZR. It really doesn’t. He may be a bad or average defensive player who had a good 147 games with the glove (woop-de-do_. It may be a bad or average defensive player who did NOT have a good or great year with the glove but the way we measure defense with UZR just got it wrong. That does NOT mean that UZR is a bad measurement device. It just means that it is not a PERFECT measurement device.
I’m not saying using Pie’s 2010 UZR measures his true talent (for that, you need 3 years of data) but it does measure his performance in 2010. And what does his 2010 UZR say, “Well, it doesn’t mean anything other than he had a good or great UZR. It really doesn’t.”
I've been playing baseball since I was six years old, so that's 40 years I've been on a baseball field and around a baseball field, and so our opinions are formulated through facts, not fiction, not their little chat room jargon.

I'm back. YAY SUMMER!
From Keith Law's ESPN chat today:
Dan (Des Moines): Klaw who would you rather have for their career Posey or Wieters?
Klaw (1:02 PM): As much as I love Posey, I’m sticking with Wieters.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY): Who do you think will win the AL & the NL Rookie of the Year?
Klaw (1:23 PM): Will win: Austin Jackson, Jason Heyward. Should win: Heyward or Posey would both be solid choices in the NL, but the AL … I might vote for Matusz.
Andrew (NoVA): Is Dan Klein the type of reliever who could jump to the majors quickly – and is that a pretty strong pick in the 3rd round, then?
Klaw (1:33 PM): If they don’t start him. He has the repertoire but not the history.
Is that our own Andrew_G there?

you know it is
and the footnote is that the Orioles fully intend to start Klein because they like the repertoire. He had some injury problems earlier on at UCLA and was the Bruins’ closer, so I’m a little dubious that it’ll work, but starter >>> reliever and there’s no reason he won’t be able to switch back (and I don’t think the Orioles particularly need the fast bullpen help the way, say, the White Sox needed Sale).

Klein as a starter
I guess that’s fine, but if he’s had injury issues before, I’m guessing he’ll follow a path similar to Koji, start for awhile, get hurt, move him to the pen.
And Klaw didn’t answer my questions damn it.

“You play to win the game.
I’m sorry, but maybe CC’s stats would be better if he didn’t have 5 runs of support… Did anyone think of that?
When you’re winning by multiple runs you pitch to contact, not for WHIP. So as much as the “bad team” thing helps Felix, the “pitching to contact” should help CC.
This is why WINS are not overrated.
Look at this scenario.
CC goes 5 innings, 2 hits no runs, then the Yankees score 8 in the bottom of the 5th, then he gives up 3 in the 6th…. does it make CC a worse pitcher than Felix because after his team took a monstrous lead he pitched to contact???"
