it was for saying the Yankees have no choice...

I had a post along the lines of 1) they do have a choice…. they can accept the fact that “anything less than a championship” is a ridiculously entitled position to take; and 2) the rest of baseball doesn’t really need national sportswriters goading the Yankees into overpaying

LaCava talk heats up and this weekend rumors of a possible Votto trade started percolating.
At first, I read it as linking the two clauses, indicating that the Orioles would be players for Votto. But looking at Cincinnati’s roster makes it pretty clear that couldn’t be the case. The only possible position we could upgrade for them would be SS and I doubt we’d trade Hardy after just signing him.
If we could package Hardy for Votto

Since they’d be moving Alonso back to 1B. That leaves us with a pretty gaping hole in LF and at SS. Andino can only play one MI position at a time, right?

Netflix really needs to get its act together
First they double their prices because they were morons who didn’t know how to set prices in the first place, then they make this big announcement that they’re starting a new company called Qwikster for mailing DVDs (because why stick with a brand name everyone knows) and then they just sent out an email this morning saying just kidding! we’re not using Qwikster anymore! It’s still Netflix!
Giraffes have absurdly strong necks.
and in the meantime, they wiped out my huge DVD queue
Couldn’t they have just kept it? It was nice because you could see what was on instant, what was coming to instant, etc. Now it’s all gone.
Seriously
who the fuck is running that company? Having to raise prices was understandable, especially with how much they’re getting squeezed by the studios and splitting up billing for the services makes sense, but they’ve gone about it in the worst possible way. Its been a PR disaster from day 1.
Wait until they get hired by the Orioles.

I have Dish Network
So I’m cancelling Netflix this month and giving the new Blockbuster streaming stuff a shot. Mostly out of spite.
Streaming was AMAZING a few years ago…and now it feels..meh.
WIthout Starz or any promise of new top-notch/modern content, I can’t justify the cost. I rarely use it anymore. I’m just not into B horror flicks.
yeah
streaming will suck until they have something other than “recent stupid rom/coms that sucked and Adam Sandler movies” available to stream
"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino
I've been pretty happy with their TV show selection
and I understand that it’s a process (they have been gradually adding more and more things). But their price change was apparently because they thought the mailing side of the house wouldn’t be used as much with streaming. But when you can only get some movies on streaming, none of which are new releases, of course it’s still going to get used a lot. Stupid.
Giraffes have absurdly strong necks.
also, not ONCE
Have I thought, “I’d like to watch movie X,” and then that movie was on streaming. NEVER. You can search around and find decent things on streaming, but it’s never what you think of on your own.

I have streaming just for the tv shows. I can watch no reservations on a whim? sign me up!
Tommy Hunter is Number One in my heart
I signed up for their free one month subscription
because there was a movie I wanted to see at a local art-house theater, and when I Googled it, it showed up on the Netflix site (“oh cool, I can watch it at home instead”). Nope, “not available”, after I sign up, of course. And I didn’t see any movies that interested me there, although it did look like a decent TV show selection.
Off topic: If you’re a fan of auto racing at all, “Senna” is an excellent movie, well worth seeing. Even non-racing fans will enjoy it.
"I may make you feel, but I can't make you think." Ian Anderson
Senna was playing at Landmark Harbor East the same weekend as the Baltimore Grand Prix
I almost went to see it. Almost.
Except that they could never afford it with the current subscription model
to improve the service, they needed more revenue. Now that they’ve totally botched their attempt to do so, who know what’ll happen.
Had they rolled out the price hikes with proposed new partnerships, I would have stuck around.
But to pair it with a loss of content? What? I’m not saying I’m out forever, but now it’s a wait-and-see situation in regard to what their added revenue adds to the service.
Nope.
Hence the price increase.

I find this almost impossible to accurately estimate
I really don’t drink unless I’m getting drunk, and the amount that I’m getting drunk varies from 0-4 times a week without much of a pattern. Then you throw in the 15 drink nights like Halloween, 10 year high school reunion, new years, birthday, etc that all happen between now and then and I just have no idea.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
This
Although I’m more 2-4 times a week. Can’t remember the last Fri or Sat night I didn’t drink. Definitely at least 5 years minus one or two weekends I might have been sick.

I haven’t drank for the purpose of getting drunk in years; I’m too old for that now. Pretty much, having a beer with a game is about the only time I do drink now. The Broncos are unlikely to be on TV anymore this season and the Terps probably won’t even get to a bowl game. I’m going to say about 60 or so. That should cover me for remaining football games, Terps basketball games, and random beers with dinner if my wife and I go out.
I think a beer every 3 days is reasonable.

I've been going through my comic collection from when I was a kid recently
and decided to frame a few of my favorite covers (mainly because the art is awesome and it brings me back to a happy place).
Anyway, I know some of you were (or are) comic nerds. Do any of you have any favorite covers? I’d be interested to see what you come up with.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
I was never a huge comic collector
In fact, I only ever really come across comics as part of my job (which involves selling stuff on eBay and Amazon). The only comic I’ve ever gone “Wow, I like that cover” is the cover to Magik #4.

Admittedly, not the classiest choice, but I think it looks damn cool regardless of the half-naked girl on the cover.
But she's blonde!
But seriously, that’s a cool choice. Def not something you’d see every day.
I also realized that this may be a bad idea for the open thread now that I saw how big that picture is. Maybe we should just post links, or we could always do an OT thread if anyone actually cares to.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
I collected comics very casually
didn’t really follow any storylines or anything, I mainly bought a comic based on the cover art. Mostly what I would assume to be very mainstream stuff, plus whatever people were selling at flea markets. From what I can remember, here are some that I thought were really cool:
Spider-Man Maximum Clonage
I really liked this one because the very front cover was made from very thin, textured plastic, almost like onionskin, and was semi-transparent. It just felt cool
X-Men Unlimited
This one stands out the most in my mind as being super cool, but now that I’m looking at it again, it doesn’t look all that cool. I loved this cover as a kid, though.
Shadow of the Bat
This was probably my favorite. Just looks damn cool.
Dark Knight Returns
I was a little older when I discovered TPBs and this was one of the first ones that I read. I always loved this cover.
yeah it's horrible
I read that issue from cover to cover a million times, though. I had a crush on Psyloche.
It is super 90's
But everything Jim Lee did was 90’s. He basically created the iconic 90’s X-Men.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
Well I wasn't saying he was bad
Jim Lee was really good actually. Leifeld was just ridiculous. Hell, the guy created this abomination.
"things like locig and prrofreading are actually valued here" - zknower
it appears to be captain america with big manboobs
"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino

X-Men 101
X-Men 136 (Probably my favorite)
Spider-Man 50
Captain America 1 (this is my representative for the “just about anything by Jack Kirby” vote)

I found that same Spider-Man #50 cover and was just about to post it, but there it was. I do remember a lot of those Spider-Man covers from the 60’s, but that was my favorite. They could have helped prop up my 401k today if I still had ’em.

I downloaded 40 years of x-men (totally legally, not for free on mediafire or anything).
They’re better now then when I was a kid because I actually appreciate the art as well as the story. The Phoenix saga is one of my favorite things ever. It got better as I aged.

For some reason...
about this time last year I experienced an urge to reread the Age of Apocalypse storyline from the X-men. I have no idea what triggered it, but I dug my entire collection out of Ma & Pa’s attic, sorted through ‘em all, and pulled out all the Legion Quest / AoA related ones. And I really enjoyed it. It certainly wasn’t ‘challenging’ reading, but there certainly is depth and nuance to be found in the stories. Plus, it is interesting to go back and see how reading comics helped expand my vocabulary as a ’tween/teen.

But I dig the effort

He turned his Omar level way up in episode 2 of B. Empire

OT, and I know I may sound like a broken record because I've brought this up before
but I watched “I am Number 4” last night. Why didn’t we have Teresa Palmer in the Hottie Contest? OMG, with the way she looks and her accent, I would think that would have been a no-brainer. Of course, until last night I had no clue who she was.
