Angle should be lifting weights

He’ll never be worth anything to the major league club unless starts hitting the ball harder. Hiring a personal trainer and a nutritionist would be the best investment he ever made.

Does Amber really think

the Orioles are “a piece or two away from being a team that can make some noise in the division”?

Some dude who is the head writer for some thing...

Said on 105.7 in an interview this morning that he doesn’t expect the O’s to name a new GM until the World Series is over, in accordance with MLB’s wishes.

He said a lot of teams would ignore MLB’s desire to keep the focus on the playoffs and do what’s best for them, but the Orioles “seem like the kind of organization that would go along with it.”

I had a class in college where the midterm was a game of Diplomacy and the number of supply centers you controlled determined your grade.

I used to play at a website at www.redscape.com, though I am no longer active there. I have personally designed and run a variant based around Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa in 220BC. I’m also working on a variant based on East Asia during the same time period.

Trombone

It’s been a few years since I got to play regularly, but I’ll always be a band geek at heart.

I did go to a school with basketball so at least there was pep band, which was good fun. Both would have been more fun, though.

MLB Draft

If pitchers are such a complete and utter crapshoot in the draft, why not draft top-notch position players to try and stock the minors like the Royals did/do, then draft a bunch of pitchers in the 5th – 15th round who throw hard, but are unrefined, and spend more money in player development to see if even 1 in 7 or 8 guys per year can be turned into a serviceable major league caliber pitcher?

I mean, isn’t that better than our current model of spending our high 1st round picks on pitchers with a 0% success rate while watching the likes of Mike Trout go 20 picks after Matt Hobgood? On the other hand, Zack Wheeler, Mike Minor, Drew Storen, Aaron Crow, and Jacob Turner were also drafted in the picks following Matt Hobgood… Yonder Alonso, Jemile Weeks, Brett Lawrie and more were drafted immediately after Matusz…

Hindsight may be 20-20, but it also says that the O’s suck at drafting compared to the other high-pick teams.

by Tezcatlipoca on Oct 11, 2011 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

you should never have a draft philosophy that is so strongly dogmatic

then you end up passing on guys like David Price, or doing things like, say, taking Billy Rowell instead of Tim Lincecum (not that that’s a particularly good example).

Isn’t it a case of playing the percentages, though? Even if 10% of the time you pass on a Clay Bucholz and take Brandon Snyder, the other 90% of the time you’re going to be passing on Wade Townshend to take Stephen Drew (noting that I would place a much higher premium on college players).

I don’t think you can build a minor league system by taking taking high risk-high reward players. I’d rather have a system overflowing with B prospects than having two A prospects and a bunch of D prospects.

A sort of moneyball approach to the draft…

except you aren't getting Drew 90% of the time

most of the time you’re getting nothing. So it might (and I have no idea, I’m just guessing) be that 10% of the time you pass on Buchholz for Snyder in order to get Drew over Townsend 12% of the time. Which is drastically limiting your draft upside. You need pitchers, position players, prep guys, juco guy, and college guys. You can’t take away any of it to have an upper-tier drafting department.

My kid's taking it at her school

I was cautiously optimistic she can qualify for National Merit Scholar, but since she’s a freshman, she doesn’t even qualify. She’ll have to take it again as a 11th grader. And she’ll already have taken the SAT twice by then.

Once a year.

Once at end of 9th grade (when she’s done with Geometry and had all the math needed and it’s all still fresh), once at end of 10th.

I’ve talked to a few parents and fellow teachers. She’s had Alg I and Alg II and is taking Geo now. So, take the SAT at the end of this year, when the highest math that’s on the test is still fresh in your mind. And, also, get practice taking the test. I’m a big fan of knowing what you’re going in to.

By the end of next year, she’ll have had another year of advanced English classes, along with Latin II this year and Latin III next year. So, good shot the English scores go up. And, she’s taken the once before at that point, so there shouldn’t be as much anxiety about the actual test day and the forms and the structure and OMG when can I go to the bathroom, etc. And I’m not too keen on her waiting until her 11th grade year for her second shot at it.

I took it twice, the 2nd time because i was a little disappointed with my verbal

but i did plenty of practice tests under exam conditions and felt really prepared by test day. Schools treat multiple scores different ways, i felt like i was better off with just a couple attempts. Things have changed though, I might feel differently with the new format.

Nobody does SATs in 12th....SAT IIs only.

I don’t really see the need to take the SATs in 9th grade. Its sorta pointlessly adding an extra score. Take it once at the end of 10th and see if another one is needed in 11th. You can always take it twice there. If you’re worried about the math, don’t be. Its exceptionally easy even if not “fresh in your mind.” If you can add and subtract, you can do that math.

I flew to NOVA this weekend to attend a wedding and squeeze in some golf. I thought about bringing my own clubs, but decided it was too much hassle. I ended using my dad’s super old clubs, and they fucking blew hard. Mind you, these clubs are an older than 8 years old (I was playing with a set of Ping Eye 2) and the lost of distance was astonishing. In the golf world, eight years a pretty long lag in technology. If brand new clubs are too expensive, I would shop the used clubs section on ebay. Now that’s it’s offseason, you could find some great deals.
