PLAYOFFS?! PLAYOFFS?! So, these championship series games have been pretty fun, huh?

On the GM front, rumors are starting to come fast and furious. DiPoto and LaCava still seem like the fashionable picks while J.P. Ricciardi apparently seems to have some very chatty backers.

I feel like a wet dog.

Two days in a row its been pouring when I’ve gotten to work.

Should be a real dog fight

Wonder who will prove to be top dog. DeSean is such a hot dog, I hope someone puts a muzzle on him. Mike Vick murdered dogs.

Is that enough?

Although she is the white sheep of her family, so maybe not a good source to settle this challenge. In any case, there’s enough other outside corroboration that I’ll believe WW isn’t full of it… this time.

That’s really why I’m sold on cases – keeps the phone looking good and easy to sell after a year. Then I can buy a new phone outright at some ridiculous $400-600 price, and in the end I’m paying the same as I would if I used my upgrade, but I’m not extending my contract. I love eBay.

It's in the original by-laws

That’s what he was talking to the Scottish guy about in that one scene. It’s an outdated rule from the 70s but it’s in the SoA bylaws that there’s absolutely no blacks in the club and they’ll have to remove his ink dishonorable discharge-style (like the guy in season one where they burned it off his back) and kick him out, or kill him since he knew the rule ahead of time.

Well, this sounds like a good thing, at least:
One final thought today. Here’s hoping the new Orioles president of baseball operations upgrades the club’s efforts in international scouting. There seems to be no doubt the team has made some minor upgrades there in the last year or two, but it still needs more in scouting and resources put into the international effort.

Manager Buck Showalter seems to be on board with upgrading here also. Not only does he seem to be a believer in acquiring talent from the Dominican, but also Venezuela.

That nation has produced some young talent on the O’s farm including pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez and catcher Gabriel Lino, and that’s a good start in a country where the Orioles were nonexistent for several years.

Koji sure is homer prone.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Oct 14, 2011 1:17 PM EDT reply actions

Do you think it's just the small sample size,

or is something else going on? Can’t see it being ballpark (yeah, Texas, but AL East parks are plenty hitter-friendly) or competition (again, AL East), so it seems like it has to be something wrong with Koji. Minor injury he’s not talking about? Personal issues, maybe related to having been traded? It just seems like too many innings and too many homers to be merely a SSS issue at this point.

"Your most precious possessions on offense are your twenty-seven outs." -- Earl Weaver

by Vuff on Oct 14, 2011 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

That's 1/3 to 1/4 of a season for a relief pitcher...

I’d consider 40-50 games for a position player getting into the “sample size significant enough to start drawing conclusions from” area.

by Tezcatlipoca on Oct 14, 2011 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions

but it isn't

one of the truths about relief pitcher performance is that it is volatile precisely because their season stats are themselves built on a small sample. To take a fraction of that and try to derive meaning from it is foolish.

Tommy Hunter is Number One in my heart

by Andrew_G on Oct 14, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

But because their season is so "short", they need to be more consistent.

I’m not saying that Koji is a terrible pitcher because he’s gotten shelled as a Ranger for 20 innings. What I am saying is that 8th and 9th inning guys typically fall into “reliable” and “unreliable” categories. Koji was pretty damn reliable as an O. He’s not as a Ranger. Any pitcher is capable of getting shelled. But, if I’m a manager, I’m going to have guys in my bullpen that I feel comfortable bringing in and knowing that 9 times out of 10 that they come in, they’ll be lights out, even if they get shelled once. These guys typically have sub-3.00 ERAs and low rate stats against them. Then there’s Kevin Gregg.

Now, it also looks like there’s a very different way that he’s been used and I think that should be considered.

As an Oriole, Koji had 47 innings in 43 appearances. He was also used every 2 or 3 days, very consistently. His average time between appearances was 2.8 days and the standard deviation for his usage was 1.6 with the O’s.
As a Ranger, Koji’s had 19 1/3 innings in 25 appearances. He’s also on a much more inconsistent schedule, being used every 3.2 days with a standard deviation for his usage of 2.05. (Note: For the standard deviation, I just took the days between each appearance and ran STDEV in Excel… very simple, but it demonstrates a point.)

I think that what we’re seeing is that Koji can be very effective as an 8th inning setup guy (or possibly even a closer). However, he’s not very effective as a 1 or 2 batter ROOGY. Inside of the samples of his ERA, HR allowed, and IP, there are other trends which, in my opinion, give greater weight to the statistical sample than they may normally warrant.

by Tezcatlipoca on Oct 14, 2011 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions

There just aren't that many relievers out there who

do stay consistent on a month to month basis in their careers. I think Koji is allowed to have a bad 20 innings with Texas without everyone saying “Maybe he’s hurt, maybe he misses us O’s fans, maybe he’s just Kevin Gregg without the glasses” or whatever. Bad 20 innings happen – especially when you get to the playoffs and you’re being brought in to specifically face the best hitters on the planet in pressurized situations. And I think that 90% or more of the relievers out there, you can look up their careers so far and find bad 20 inning samples. It happens.

I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.

by Andrew_G on Oct 14, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I just think the 'maybes' are wrong...

I think that we should be saying, “Maybe Texas is using him incorrectly based on his historical track record of success with how the Orioles used him.”

by Tezcatlipoca on Oct 14, 2011 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Andrew is right.

20 innings is not a sample size you can draw conclusions from, especially when those 20 innings are facing some pretty ridiculous offenses.

Mother, did it need to be so high.

by salvotion on Oct 14, 2011 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I certainly agree with Andrew. But that’s what the job of relievers so tough and why it’s hard to get a good return since mid-season reliever acquisitions are judged on such a small amount of work

When I saw his face last night when he was coming out of the game...

I might be reading into this. But it really looked like he was MUCH MUCH happier in Baltimore, despite the losing.

I don’t even see the Texas crown immortalizing him like we did. Even the “KO-JI, KO-JI, KO-JI” chants at Camden made him feel worthy I believe. We did that because we didn’t have many other things going right to grasp on to and he was a bright spot. He’ll never get that kind of affection there.

I’ll love and miss Koji forever and wouldn’t even mind overpaying for him to come home in a couple years. We’re going to suck anyway, might as well suck with guys I like.

ARGHHHHHHH.... I wish I could get into it!!!

I watched the entire first season and maybe 2 episodes of the 2nd season.

Which show would you bid me to give a second chance (I’ve tried all of them): Parks and Rec/The Community/Louie

Will work for Recs.

by Andrew_G on Oct 14, 2011 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, I liked it but not enough to tune in every week.

I’ll catch it here or there when I think about it.

I watch sick amounts of TV and some of the shows I watch are MUST SEE for me, then there are several that just linger on the peripheral if I think about it or am in the mood. Louie falls into the latter. But I could probably be talked into it… you know like how TL talked me into the Giants last week and then switched his pick to the Saints at the last second.

Will work for Recs.

by Wieters Wieners on Oct 14, 2011 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

All three

Though in my opinion, it goes Community, Louie, Parks & Rec. But the gap between them is small and if someone put them in a different order, I couldn’t really argue with them.

by Holymittens on Oct 14, 2011 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree

though I think P&R is more consistently funny than the other two. Louie in particular might have crossed over to the drama genre. Except then he’ll end his show with a standup bit about Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn and I will die laughing.

Ten Funny Things on TV

Community
30 Rock
Parks & Rec
Archer
South Park
The Daily Show
The Colbert Report
The Venture Brothers
Metalocalypse
Family Guy/American Dad/Cleveland Show (I’ll count them as all the same show, because they’re close enough)

Unless you only mean things showing new episodes, in which case 4 of those are currently on break, but I could list some more.

by Holymittens on Oct 14, 2011 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

by Gamecock24 on Oct 14, 2011 3:14 PM EDT up reply actions

They are hilarious cartoons

Venture Brothers is essentially a satire of Johnny Quest, but much much more. Metalocalypse is basically what the world would be like if the most popular band in the world was a death metal band and also was the 13th largest economy in the world.

by Holymittens on Oct 14, 2011 3:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Eh, I don't really enjoy grown up cartoons

I also don’t know what Venture Brothers and Metalolypse is.

I just mean shows that are current, not necessarly that they’re on the air now. Like 30 Rock is awesome.

I may have been hyperbolizing by saying there aren’t 10 funny things on TV right now, but not by much (although I admittedly haven’t watched all the TV). I’m just much more particular about my comedy than other kinds of shows. I’ll watch any kind of half-assed drama for some reason, but I’m tough on comedies.

Doctor Who, Fringe, House, Game of Thrones, and Pawn Stars, off the top of my head. I have a feeling there’s other stuff I like but can’t think of. And there’s other stuff I want to watch, but can’t find the time for (it’s easier to fit in a 24 minute comedy than a 48 minute drama), too.

by Holymittens on Oct 14, 2011 3:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I can handle an hour drama

but when they start making special epsidoes that are two hours, they sit on my DVR forever. It’s too much of a commitment!

Its why I hate Lost

so many shows feel like they have to have some serialized mysteries, but so few people are actually good at writing them. What meager income might flow in will probably not even out the lost income from all their banner ads that are based on page views. When people hit their 15 views they will go elsewhere for news and in a few months they won’t even come back at the start of the month.

So until the volume dies down, you just have to keep trying to activate and hope you catch on to their servers. Apparently Verizon is fine.

OK, I know it's Friday night already where you guys are,

but I have a question.

I want to eat some buffalo wings during the Skins/Eagles game on Sunday. Most of my local places, I don’t have faith they’ll be making them at that hour of the morning. But there are a couple of chains I know will be open: Wingstreet (aka Pizza Hut….. shutter), which is near me, and a BWW about 5 miles away.

I don’t want to have average wings, I want to have AMAZING wings. Is it worth going to either of these places to get my fix, or should I just fold my cards and have breakfast instead?

If you want AMAZING wings

you’ll need to make them.

Otherwise, you’re depending on a chain restaurant to deliver “amazing”. That almost never works/

Dude, hit up BWWs.... get the Chipotle dry rub.

It’s fucking delicious. The Asian Zing are pretty spectacular too.

Parm Garlic is a good sauce but will have your shit smelling like diapers for a week.

If you like spicey go with Mango Habanero or Caribbean Jerk.

Ok, Im on my way to BWWs now… I talked myself into it.

Will work for Recs.

they have red pepper paste flavored wings

which would be closest to buffalo flavor. See here:http://www.kyochonfnb.com/en/menu/menu_red.asp

that's amazing

but do they come frozen?

also, $2 a wing seems bit pricey. ;)

I suspect they are indeed frozen

And that is pricey, seeing as how 50 wings are $37 off the regular menu. But, you never mentioned price, just that you wanted AMAZING. Hey, if you buy 200, it goes down to $1.50 a wing!

Here’s one suggestion.

Roscoe’s is really popular in LA, but I’m not sure if they have buffalo wings.

melrose and la brea

that could work.

for that matter, if i’m going across town, i could just park my butt at barney’s beanery. they do a decent wing, if i recall, and they’ll carry the game for sure.

Hey, I was in that area for like 5 minutes this summer.

When I went to Vegas I drove into LA for a dodgers-dbacks game. Dodger stadium sucks big time. I may have mentioned that before though.

Why?

ROBERT MOTHERFUCKING ANDINO!

by WestcoastO'sFan on Oct 14, 2011 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions

he was on a 1-year contract,

and it’s not being renewed.

the sun article (now on FP) says,

Not renewing Randolph did not come as a surprise to club observers – and, in fact, was expected to be the primary change to Showalter’s coaching staff this offseason. Randolph was one of only two coaches to receive a one-year deal – along with Russell – last year, and his switch from bench coach to third base coach was a demotion for him and promotion for Russell, though the club attempted to spin it otherwise.

Roch says he has been hinting about this for a while as well.

But nobody says WHY. Was he arrogant? Doing a bad job? I dunno.

Here I thought Russell was a bad 3B coach and they had to get him away from there.

Although Randolph may not have been much better in the role, having been possessed by the ghost of the Windmill.

They also had the excuse of Russell's knee surgery.

I thought it was protecting Russell by spinning, if anything. I guess that shows what I know.
