If you changed the DH rule entirely all pitchers would end up hitting better.

Is it really more strategic

to pinch-hit for a tired pitcher (i.e., can’t pitch anymore and can’t hit to begin with, so is now essentially useless) than to pinch-hit for your glove-first shortstop (can kinda hit and can definitely field, so you might regret losing his glove) in the late innings? The NL may have managers making more in-game moves, but it doesn’t really mean it’s more strategic.

Except that most AL teams go all out on hitting and other than a few select teams they don’t have those glove first type of players, they just vault through all 9 with their best hitters other than the occasional pinch runner. So sure the venue for strategy is still there but the impetus isn’t.

by WestcoastO'sFan on Oct 19, 2011 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions

The only sense in which I think you're right

is that NL teams know it isn’t worth signing an expensive DH type to sit on their bench and hit once a game. On league defense, a few numbers (Andrew may yell at me if I’ve used these wrong):

2011 NL Totals:
DRS: 90
UZR: -41

2011 AL Totals:
DRS: 93
UZR: 41.6

And it’s hard to argue that the NL has less offense because of good pitching and defense when every NL team has a sub-Izturis hitter step to the plate 2-3 times per game.

I’m not going to say that you’re silly for liking the game with pitchers hitting and the like. But I don’t think there’s that big a difference between the NL and the AL in terms of how teams are built – teams in both leagues want the best players they can afford at each position, whether that value comes from offense or defense.

Because,

it engineers the whole game towards hitting and so teams focus less and less on their pitching and instead on creating a 9 man lineup that is going to score more as opposed to give up less.

Why do I care about that?

Football players play a sport and sit on the bench for half the game. They do what they are good at.

If you have a problem with DHs, do you have a problem with all pitchers? Starters only appear in one out of every 5 games!!! Relievers pitch at most a couple of innings every few games!!!

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

by O'sFan21 on Oct 19, 2011 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes actually.

I would prefer to see fewer relief pitchers and I would like to see starters go deeper into games. The increasing amount of sitting and waiting in this game bothers me.

So you want to see starters go deeper, but dislike the DH.

Which by nature, shortens starting pitcher’s outings.

So in your ideal world

Each team would have a 9 man roster where the pitcher pitches every game and bats 9th. Fair enough. Weird as shit, but if that’s your thing that’s your thing.

I would like to see the game played more like it was played before the DH.
