Sunday Bird Droppings
In the playoffs last night, Milwaukee won, Philadelphia came back in dramatic fashion, Texas won, and the Yankees won.

The Sun's 2011 Orioles report card - baltimoresun.com
Here's the text-only version of The Sun's annual report card. You'll thank me later for sparing you the slideshow version.
School of Roch: Pitching is starting to look like a top priority
"They need a bat in the middle of their lineup. They might need a left fielder, corner infielder, designated hitter and second baseman. They might need a late-inning reliever. But another arm for the rotation tops all of them." Who will mentor the 2012 Orioles rotation? Inquiring minds want to know!
Watching 'Moneyball,' living with Orioles' losing ball, even after Red Sox collapse - Baltimore Sun
"The O's do provide a plot point of sorts — they beat the Athletics in a game that, at least in the movie, triggers Beane to go bonkers. Passing by the clubhouse after the game and hearing the players laughing it up despite being mired in a losing streak, he starts smashing things and dresses down the goof-offs. As the players stare back in either stunned or sullen silence, Beane tells them, "This is what losing sounds like."
Robert Pattinson's Undercover LA Cruise | Celebrity-gossip.net
"The "Twilight" heartthrob did his best to cover up his face while sporting his trusty Baltimore Orioles ballcap and scruffy facial hair as paparazzi desperately tried to snap up shots." I'm not so sure I need the dude from 'Twilight' wearing O's gear.
Rangers' bullpen hiccups, but nails down win | Texas Rangers | Texas Rangers News and Videos ...
Uehara struggles, but other relievers come through in late innings.
(More) Francona, The Baltimore Orioles and the Red Sox Offseason | Fire Brand of the American League
"Abraham responded to Gonzalez that teams like the Red Sox and Yankees have long had those challenges, it’s part of playing for a high-profile team. "Why does it have to be?" Gonzo said. "They can put the Padres on ESPN, too. The schedule really hurt us. Nobody is really reporting that." So now Adrian Gonzalez is complaining the Red Sox are on ESPN too much. He's really fit in quickly with the rest of that clubhouse, I'd say.

I can't believe I missed all the excitement of the last game!
I’ve been catching up for the past 6 hours or something!!
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Vlad is good.
Felix Pie is actually an ADORABLE ex-Oriole.
Or became an ex-adorable Oriole. No wait: FP adorably became an ex-Oriole. There.
And I hope Sawx fans realize the awful truth about their boy Carl: Pie woulda had that. Ahahahahaha!
In other news, the PAC 12 made everybody paying attention some nice scratch yesterday. OK, it coulda been a little more. But that’s what next wk is for. As usual.
And today’s Consumer Review:
Worst new long-flight "hi-tech" diversion : The Delta In-flight Trivia Challenge
Got 9 hrs to kill? Done the NYT crosswords you saved up? A little tired of your pb novel? Welp, the answer is NOT the DI-FTC, which will annoy the pants off you (to the dismay of your neighbors) with its
—Random word misspellings (ntm standard Britspellings) throughout, as though spell check hadn’t been invented;
—Quotation marks imposed everywhere on questions and answers that aren’t quotations;
—Answers followed by In Case You’re Interested "amplifications" that amplify exactly nothing (Q: "What is the capital of the US state of Oregon?" A: "Salem". In Case You’re Interested: "Salem is the capital of Oregon.");
—Grammar/usage mistakes on a 5th-grade level ("How many players are their on a basketball side?") Their WHAT?;
—Multiple factual errors that’ll set your eyes a-rollin’ ("Where did Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin meet in 1944 to discuss postwar Europe?" "Correct" answer: "Ukraine" [!])
Consider the low-tech in-flight magazine. At least it had an editor.
We still suck, but on Sept. 29, 2011, we did a Very Cool Thing. Yeah, we did that.

Why the hell is Roch claiming that the O's
“…might need a left fielder, corner infielder, designated hitter and second baseman. They might need a late-inning reliever.”
The way I see it (and I hope to G-d someone in the Warehouse has enough sense to also) is that FA’s won’t help next year or the one after. We need youth and we need to flip vets for prospects.
LF – WHERE’S MOLDY? For heaven’s sake! He was the 6th best hitter on the team while only playing 87 games (71 GS).
DH – Reynolds. ‘nuff said. (If Vlad comes back, I… just don’t know. I’ll be sad(der).)
2B – Why not give Dino/Adams the job if not BriBob?
Late inning reliever(s): JJ + Honey Badger. Or do we have to go get more crap “closers” for multi-year deals?
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Vlad is good.
Who the hell even knows any more?
We also have to consider that guys writing about what the Orioles need are the same guys who collectively think that AJ was the Most Valuable Oriole.

Agreed on all counts
Typical Orioles, trying to solve the wrong problems.
If you look at those UZR ratings or whatever
Agree with all you say.
As My Cousin Vinnie would say, we need “youte,”
I think it’s pretty clear the Orioles have very little interest in Nolan Reimold as an everyday player.

because those are the positions where the Orioles don't have money committed
if they want to upgrade the positional starters, they aren’t going to do it in center, right, short, or at catcher. And they also have Reynolds to play somewhere between first, third, and DH. So if the thing to do is upgrade, the only places to do it are second, left, corner infield, and DH.
Jim: Why?
Gary: I don't know why.
This. All of it.

Where did this entitlement come from though? I can’t imagine it came from the two imports in Gonzo and Carl Crawford. No one could show up from small market teams and think they are King Shit. That means it came from and comes from some old stalwarts. I’m not getting into more speculation because frankly it’s poison, but I want to know whom.
Maybe it comes from idiot fans and Sawx bloggers, you douchebag.

well, I believe Froncona implied there were chemical problems inside the locker room
and that doesn’t come from annoying fans.
Tommy hunter still sucks!
Chemical problems?
Like how Big Roidi still doesn’t have any explanation for why his name is on the Mitchell Report?

Re: Starting pitching
Since the O’s aren’t going anywhere soon, and hopefully the FO also recognizes this fact, there really isn’t much reason to pick up new SPs. That said, I wouldn’t mind getting Edwin Jackson or Kuroda on a 1-2-year contract. They’re good/ very good but underrated and can probably be had for little.
War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Vlad is good.
Rule #1 of free agency
Unless they’re coming off a severe injury (e.g., Bartolo Colon), FA starting pitching is always overpriced. Always.
No way Jackson or Kuroda come cheap, unless by “cheap” you mean “cheap in comparison to signing Prince Fielder.”
Tell Me Why
Why does Buck not like Reimold? He loves Tommy Hunter and Chris Davis, two players who are probably spare parts. Buck fawns over Vlad, the god of singles and GIDP. Why is Reimold on his bad list?
If the Os resign Vlad, I am throwing in the towell.
This is one of the enduring questions of the season.
And no one knows the answer.

I listened to the latest podcasts. Good job!
As the age equivalent of your dad, I appreciated the discussion of WAR. I know have a rough idea of orders of magnitude when evaluating players. I would appreciate a podcast in which you do the same for the other modern metrics. What are the orders of magnitude for OPS, for example.
Thanks
I didn't see where any of the supposedly plus defensive alternatives played any better.
Like Felix “Where’s the Ball” Pie, or Matt “Where’s the Ball” Angle. Moldy did ok, and he has a pretty good arm. What he also has is the ability to contribute with the bat, about which the rest of those scrubs haven’t got a clue.
Give Moldy the job, and let him show what he can do healthy, playing every day.
he's no pedro strop! - j.q. higgins
Moldy's obviously the favorite of the guys in the org
but I’d guess if they can bring in someone better they won’t hesitate
Jim: Why?
Gary: I don't know why.
Even though the rule of thumb is that you need 3 years of data for defensive metrics
to be even sorta reliable, the partial data we have for Reimold shows year-to-year improvement. And in 09 he was dealing with an Achilles injury toward the end of the season, which affects range, which makes up most of defensive metrics.

“The O’s do provide a plot point of sorts — they beat the Athletics in a game that, at least in the movie, triggers Beane to go bonkers.
That’s true in real life as well. Beane admitted he traded Pena and Giambi out of anger and Depodesta tried to talk him out of it.

i saw moneyball again this weekend. that scene has geronimo gil who i thrift acquired from the dodgers for mike trombley. i thought that would be thift’s finest moment. i guess melvin mora for bordick remains thrift’s best trade.

he looked like a young jim thome.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
Or Ricketts could decide that his primary pursuit would be to go after Epstein, or Tampa Bay Rays GM Andrew Friedman. He could offer either a contract that would be enormous, in the baseball operations world — let’s say, five years and $20 million — and it would be a relative pittance compared to what he would need to pay either Fielder or Pujols.
Buster Olney mentions that GM talent may be a great market inefficiency to exploit. If the Os could have sign Friedman for the price of Gregg and Gonzo, I think I just might prefer that. Not that Angelos is ever smart enough to see this.
Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"
wow, terrible against the righties though.

I'm not really worried.
Looks like he’s a monster against lefties, now. I think I remember reading/hearing that the Orioles had him take at-bats against lefties as much as possible over the off-season and during the spring. If he can start hitting lefties again (since his platoon splits had a huge reversal) he’ll be a total batter. If not, lefties might pitch around him, but he can still be an offensive force.
if he hits rightes like he hit lefties this year, he’ll be an MVP candidate with or without a playoff appearance.
