Ultimately, none of these three candidates represent the type of GM that By the Numbers would be truly excited about. While each appears to use advanced metrics, none of them are on the forefront of employing new quantitative evaluation strategies from fields such as economics. The most frustrating aspect of the lack of these types of candidates is that they are available and cheap. The current GM Market is flooded with young MBAs who are capable of the types of analysis that the Chicago Cubs just paid through the nose for in their acquisition of Theo Epstein.

“Cheap and available” are not my first criteria for determining whom I want our next GM to be. Also, if you’re going to bitch about the current candidates, why not offer up your own alternatives, instead of just saying the market is “flooded” with guys you’d like?

That said, this interview with DiPoto that he links to makes me happy.

I love Glass Houses so so much. He does do “This Night” once in a while which is pretty cool, but a lot of the best parts of his catalog gets ignored. by J(O's)elskIL on Oct 27, 2011 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions

Well, I can already hear the pro-Roberts arguments

he’s second all-time in (modern) Oriole stolen bases behind Brady. If he ever comes back he could take over the top spot, fourth in doubles behind Cal, Eddie, and Brooks. Sixth in triples behind Cal, Brooks, Brady, Paul Blair, and Al Bumbry. Ninth in hits (Cal, Brooks, Eddie, Brady, Boog, Ken Singleton, Blair, and Bumbry). Eighth in walks (Cal, Brady, Boog, Ken, Eddie, Brooks, and Mark Belanger). Played his entire career (so far) in Baltimore, where he made two all star teams and got some MVP votes. Folks will say his defense was impeccable. Fangraphs has him 11th all time in positional Oriole fWAR.

And it’s wrong to not say he was great in 2007 and 2008. He was other-worldly in 2005. And he’s been very good in four other seasons.

So he’s got a pretty good argument.

I'll develop my own image. I'm an original man. A one and only. I just need some help.

One of the CC articles that stood out for me this year was when you broke down the runs scored/runs allowed

And how the team would have to improve to get to benchmark win points.

It’s all the more important for people to not just go spouting dream scenario signings for the offense now, because what does that get us when the pitching staff was the worst in MLB? A fat lot of nothing.

It was a distinct way of approaching the problem.

So it’s stuck in my mind.

If the O’s had allowed one full run fewer per game, they would have still allowed 698 runs, and had a run differential of +10 (708 runs scored). That ain’t getting us into the playoffs, although it’s sure closer than we are now. Plus then we might actually feel like we grew some arms and it was worth buying some bats.

in all honesty

I re-read those blogposts at the beginning of October intending to post-mortem them and there were many, many things that I feel like, I dunno, I just know better than to write. Example: starting with a solution and working backwards. Eesh. And then things got busy at work and in life and so on and so on. But I’m glad at least a few of y’all remember them still.

If nothing else, take away this: the currency of this game is runs. Getting more runs and allowing fewer runs is the only way forward.

anyone see the boston globe today?

Tony LaRussa:

"On-base percentage is one of the most dangerous concepts of the last seven, eight years,’’ he said, "because it forces some executives and coaches and players to think that it’s all about getting on base by drawing walks. And the fact is that the guys that have the best on-base percentage are really dangerous hitters whenever they get a pitch in the strike zone.

"So if the pitcher knows that and the catcher knows that, they work the edges, and pretty soon it’s 2-and-1, 2-and-1 rather than 0-and-1 all the time.

"You watch your productive hitters in the big leagues, and they get a chance to drive in a run, they look for the first good strike, and the better the pitching, especially this time of the year, you get that first strike, that may be the last one that you get to see. So you’d better be ready to swing early. It’s not sitting up there and taking strike one, strike two so that you can work the count.’’

Anyone want to try and make sense of that? In 2011, Miguel Cabrera led baseball in OBP. He put the first pitch into play 15.5% of the time. Not exactly sitting around waiting for a walk. False dichomoties.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Oct 27, 2011 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Allow me to attempt to parse this into sensible speech

“On-base percentage is misunderstood by people, who believe that the only valuable portion of it is getting on base via the walk, as opposed to guys who may draw fewer walks but have a higher batting average.

“In actuality, the guys in the majors who are best at getting on base are typically the ones who can actually hit the ball well, not just those who have a good batting eye. This is because if a guy can hit any pitch in the zone for a homerun, the pitcher and catcher will be more inclined to work the edges of the strike zone, which are called for balls more often, and you end up in a 2-1 situation as opposed to the 0-1.

“The most productive hitters are the ones who look for a ball to drive and lay off the rest. Because the best pitchers are capable of throwing pitches that start in the zone and move out of it, the first strike thrown to you may be the only actual strike you see in an at-bat. Therefore you can’t just go ’I’m going to take these pitches’ because you might not see a pitch you can drive more than once in the at bat. You can’t just sit there and take two strikes every at bat and expect to have success.”

by Holymittens on Oct 27, 2011 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

*shrugs*

Though I don’t believe he’s saying “You gotta go up there hacking!” only that “The best hitters are those that can identify a pitch as hittable and drive it in any count, as opposed to those who just sit there waiting for a mistake that may not come.”

i remember earlier this year

there was some series where we were playing the yankees and sending out arrieta, britton, and a 3rd guy, not matusz.

the yankees specifically presumed that, being younger, less expereinced pitchers, they’d all want to get ahead with “strike one”; i.e., they expected a lot of first-pitch fastballs because we weren’t sending out wily veterans. they had a team meeting about being more aggressive than usual early in the count.

whether it’s for the reasons they quoted or not, the strategy paid off. they went up early in all three games. and this was early in the year, before britton and arrieta started sucking.

And I can anecdotally remember

a couple of games with the Yankees (esp. Gardner, who is the Platonic ideal no-power high-patience guy Cameron talks about) getting burned by pitchers with superior/unexpected control the first time or two around the batting order.

I think he's saying

that while it’s good to be a patient, selective hitter, it’s bad to be a passive hitter, and some people may be learning the wrong lessons when trying to increase their OBPs through additional walks. It isn’t worth increasing your OBP by .020 if your SLG drops by twice that (or more) because you never swing at first pitch fastballs down the middle.

the article covers the pesticide delusion
Some supporters of organic growing claim that the danger of non-organic food lies in the residues of chemical pesticides. This claim is even more ridiculous: Since the organic pesticides and fungicides are less efficient than their modern synthetic counterparts, up to seven times as much of it must be used. Organic pesticides include rotenone, which has been shown to cause the symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease and is a natural poison used in hunting by some native tribes; pyrethrum, which is carcinogenic; sabadilla, which is highly toxic to honeybees; and fermented urine, which I don’t want on my food whether it causes any diseases or not. Supporters of organics claim that the much larger amounts of chemicals they use is OK because those chemicals are all-natural.

I like cruelty-free products as well, and I try to buy them as much as possible. I don’t pretend they’re any healthier for me, though.

Pesticides don't make it into the food chain.

I agree with Phil. It is mostly about marketing.

The one area where I would give some credence to organic being “healthier” might be on additives, specificially hormone additives. And the only reason for this is because there isn’t yet a lot of study on the subject.

This is not to say organic farming is BS. There can be some benefits to the soil and possible water quality. But the healthier food argument is more Madison Ave than FFA.

And lets not get started on the eat locally kick. While I support local producers, a lot of the stuff you hear about it being environmentally friendly, particularly with regard to carbobn foot print, is pretty much propaganda.

But what they're talking about IS the factory farmers

Sure, when you buy organic in a store, it’s not the same. But you also should keep in mind how many small farms (who market in farmers markets and roadside stands) find it’s too costly to go through the whole certification process, but in the end are a lot more honest in their farming practices. One my dad’s closest friends is an organic farmer (not certified) and he loses tons of crops every year because he refuses to use a lot of pesticides. The same thing happens to most of the farmer’s at Takoma Park.

Contrary to popular belief, I am not Jewish.

by DCO'sfan on Oct 27, 2011 4:34 PM EDT up reply actions

i'm not reading the whole thing

but that article leaves out a lot.

first off, I can’t take this seriously:

The National Review reports that Americans believe organic food is healthier by a 2-1 margin, despite the lack of any evidence supporting this.

There is no evidence anywhere of any organic food being better for you? Ridiculous. There are many, many examples of some specific organic food being better than some non-organic food. He brings up pesticides, stating that organic pesticides are no better than conventional ones. He leaves out the fact that some folks farm completely pesticide free. So it’s a question of NO pesticide, as opposed to “which is worse”.

Today’s synthetic pesticides and fertilizers are completely biodegradable. They’re supported by decades of studies that demonstrate their total safety.

What? ALL synthetic pesticides that all farmers are using today are supported by decades of studies that demonstrate their “total safety”? This sounds like it was written by Con-Agra.

Moreover, and this is my main point, not being able to prove something is better than something else is not at all the same thing as proving two things are equal. Which is the main argument articles like the one above espouse: “You can’t show me how they’re different, therefore them must be the same.” It’s a failure of simple logic.

And one that also doesn’t take into account labeling outside this country where business interests are not in such tight control of government standards. A clear-cut example of this is bovine growth hormones, which are not addressed in the article above. I can assure you, their addition into foods have been proven to make those foods less healthy. This is not something about two crops being “grown the same” that can be compared to “kosher” labelling. This is about one farmer feeding hormones to his cows and another farmer not, and how those hormones have repeatedly been linked to higher cancer incidence.

In the USA, rBST labels state “NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE HAS BEEN SHOWN…..”, as an FDA requirement. But look closely: 1) It says no “significant” difference, which is no the same as no difference; 2) It ignores any overseas studies, and only accepts studies approved by the FDA, which is heavily lobbied by Agri-Business.

It is a fact that numerous overseas studies in several different countries have conclusively demonstrated the higher cancer rates linked to rBST, to the point where growth hormones are banned by the entire EU, Canada, Japan, Australia, etc. But here in the USA you can still buy them if you want.

As an educated consumer, I choose not to poison myself, or my wife, who is a two-time survivor of estrogen-positive breast cancer. Organic labeling allows us to be confident that hormones are not getting into our food.

by zknower on Oct 27, 2011 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions

That isn't true though.

To be organic, a product has to be only approx 95 percent organic. In many cases, the inspections for those standards are the same as regular products. For example, organic milk cannot come from cows that have been given hormones. The testing for this is done using the end product. The USDA stipulates that all milk (organic/conventional) cannot have any added hormones in the end product. They actually go thru the same inspection process.

I don’t have much tolerance for stupid. Or cheese on food that doesn’t need it. -duck

by twistedlogic on Oct 27, 2011 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

no

organic also involves pledges on the part of farmers and onsite inspections, none of which applies to conventional milk.

hormones can’t be detected in either product at the end of the process. that doesn’t mean they aren’t there, as is evidenced by the studies i’ve mentioned that conclude they have an effect.

again, the USDA is not the final arbiter. and “not being able to detect differences at the end” isn’t anything like saying “these products are the same.”

Yeah, reserves are generally for suckers

There is a reason to use them, such as if you have a high value item that has a limited audience, but for something like an iPhone, you’re throwing away money by using a reserve.

by Holymittens on Oct 27, 2011 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

not at all.

I can just re-list it next week with no reserve.

by zknower on Oct 27, 2011 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I never said there was risk

I said you’re throwing money away, which you are, as a reserve adds on costs, typically fairly large ones (in comparison to other eBay fees).

"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino

by zknower on Oct 27, 2011 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

A couple of dollars

Which isn’t a lot in the grand scheme of things, but considering an auction starting a 0.01 with no reserve can be started for 0.10 or even free given the right conditions, a reserve isn’t worth it unless you’re selling (as I said) a high-value, limited-interest item.

by Holymittens on Oct 27, 2011 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, i'm just more risk-averse I think

i don’t want to take any chance at all that somehow i fucked up the listing and nobody finds my phone desirable and it winds up going for spare change.

i already bought my 4S. this auction has to make back that price and then some. i have no doubts that a few people will step in. if they don’t, like i said, i’ll just re-list.

anecdotal evidence

I’ve sold several phones on eBay over the years, started them all at a penny, and all ended up selling for just around whatever the market rate was for that particular model.

by PhilR8 on Oct 27, 2011 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

This is what generally happens

With something like an iPhone, there are more interested buyers at the average price in a given time than sellers. So you’ll almost always get what the average is.

When you have something like, say, an old piece of telecommunications equipment which was discontinued by the manufacturer, but continues to be used in legacy systems, then a reserve (or, really, a Buy It Now) is a smarter choice, as there might be one person in North America who needs it on a given week and without the reserve, it’ll sell for $10 or whatever.

by Holymittens on Oct 27, 2011 2:29 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously

If you need to be sure it sells for a minimum, just have someone you know bid it to that price and save your money.

If you don’t want it to sell for that price, it won’t. It’s the same as putting a reserve on, just costs you less and drives away no traffic. It’s a fail safe. I’ve never had to do it, but if a $300 item I was selling was about to sell for $80 bucks, I’d do it.

Ugh, golf clubs

I hated selling golf clubs. They never got any money.

The only things I can really say are common sense stuff. Take lots of pictures. If you don’t want to pay eBay for additional pictures, host them on Photobucket and link them in your listing. Describe things in as much detail as you can.

And make sure you have the proper weight on items for shipping. Nothing sucks as much as selling something, then discovering because your weight was off by 5 pounds and it’s being shipped across the country, now you’ve lost $20-30 in shipping fees.

by Holymittens on Oct 27, 2011 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i think what HM is saying is that you’re driving away watchers with a reserve. i never follow auctions with reserves because i don’t want to get into the hassle of bidding on something that doesn’t meet the minimum price. i might watch an auction with a reserve if the seller lists the reserve price and it’s low.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Oct 27, 2011 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

also, just to be clear, i think the effect of a reserve is minimum. instead of having 20 watchers, you’ll 15 and final auction price will only be slightly lower IMO. even with a minimum, i’m sure it’ll sell for $300 easy.

Kevin Gregg-"You obviously haven't acquired my taste for pitching yet"

by birdman on Oct 27, 2011 1:41 PM EDT up reply actions

There is this too

Though in most cases, you’ll find someone else interested who doesn’t care, unless your reserve is right at the edge of where the item typically sells for.

If an item normally sells for $300 and you put a $300 reserve on it, you’ll drive off buyers. If you put a $200 reserve, the item will surpass the reserve and buyers will still push it toward $300.

by Holymittens on Oct 27, 2011 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

that has been my experience in the past.

i’ve sold about 10 things on ebay over the years, and have always had a reserve. never been disappointed in any of the auctions, and my reserve was always met.

might i have made a few more $$ without? quite possibly. but that’s not my ultimate goal.

I do have to say

if you are going to do it, use a little common sense. I have 2 separate auctions I’m following where they obviously bid up their own item as it got close to the end, but they BOTH did it with brand new 0 feedback accounts. Then, as soon as they ended (within 5 minutes) they both offered me a 2nd chance option. Like the people won and then immediately said “oh shit, I don’t want it”.

I bought neither out of spite. They’re both re-listed and one guy has already bid himself up with the same account again.

The Cure is awesome.

The Jack Off Jill version takes the song in a different direction, though, which is the most important thing for a cover song to do, in my opinion. If it’s just a band playing as close to the original as possible, what’s the point?

I mean, I think Smells Like Teen Spirit is a good song, but it’s not like a top song or anything.

by Holymittens on Oct 27, 2011 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

It's always an interesting question.

I don’t know if I can answer “best”, but 5 songs that most scream “90s” to me, I can do.

Rage Against the Machine (your favorite song from their first 3 albums – I’m going with Take The Power Back)
Green Day (your favorite song from Dookie – I’m going with Welcome to Paradise)
Smashing Pumpkins – Bullet with Butterfly Wings
Pearl Jam – Black (this is because duck will freak out otherwise)
Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sitta

That last is the most 90s thing. “I’m not sick, but I’m not well” – that’s the 90s in a nutshell.

I would give you 4/5ths of a different list tomorrow, probably.

That's a crazy statement

Considering how many people were copying and covering each other in the onset of rock and roll. There have been so many good covers that people don’t know who the original songwriter even was. There’s a good chance your favorite song was first written by Otis Redding, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, etc. 50+ years ago.

Off the top of my head

Bob Marley – I Shot the Sheriff (covered by Eric Clapton)
Otis Redding – Respect (covered by Aretha Franklin)
J.J. Cale – Cocaine (covered by Eric Clapton)
The Beatles – I Wanna be Your Man (Written by Lennon/McCartney but practically given to the Stones to be one of their first singles)
Fleetwood Mac – Black Magic Woman (covered by Santana)

My vote for “Best” –
Bob Dylan/Jimi Hendrix – All Along the Watchtower

WHAT A CROCK OF SHIT
"I think it was a shame that they didn’t let players who had surgery spend time with the doctors and trainers that they trust on a daily basis. I wish I could’ve. I think what I went through in July, I could’ve went through in March. I started doing things and it slowly swelled up and I wasn’t here. I can ice it at home and do things at home … But I’ve never been through it before."

Hey Chris! During the lockout, you were a private citizen! You are in the middle of a 6-year, $30M contract, and will make $3M this coming year. Do you really think you couldn’t have gone to see any doctors you wished at any facility of your choosing as a private citizen? You had that option. You just chose not to pay for it.

I used to be a huge Cooley fan, but he’s reminding me more and more of Shockey every day.

by zknower on Oct 27, 2011 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions

I can see where he's coming from, especially this part:
the doctors and trainers that they trust

These were likely the doctors and trainers that advocated for, or at least advised him on, the surgery in the first place. Before making a decision like that, you likely rely on having those same people available throughout the entire process.

by kba26 on Oct 27, 2011 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

right, but my point is this

they WERE available to him. just not on the Redskins’ dime.

I’m sure that the regular Redskins doctors are independent physicians with their own practices who contract independently for the team. there’s not reason he couldn’t have seen them on his own.

but seriously?

like those guys are so much more aware than other specialized PTs and trainers?

it’s just sour grapes. There’s no reason to believe he could not have gotten an equal or better quality of care on his own. There’s also no reason to assume if he had trained with those same therapists and there had been no lockout that he wouldn’t have had the same issues he’s having now.

"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino

by zknower on Oct 27, 2011 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Theres no guarantee he wouldn't have had the same problems

but you do build a level of trust with those trainers, and you want consistent treatment. I don’t doubt the possibility that switching trainers and doctors for the offseason could have had ill effects. And even if it did, it very well could have had a psychological impact on him where not being able to follow the same routines is now causing him to doubt the success of his recovery.

full statement

from WaPo

Two days after he was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list, Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley called himself a "casualty of the [NFL] lockout," because he was prohibited from rehabilitating his surgically-repaired knee at the team facility this offseason.

"I feel 100 percent – and I’m not blaming anybody. I feel one hundred percent that I am a casualty for the season, of the lockout," Cooley said.

He has had his knee drained 15 times this season. I don’t think that’s just because he was rehabbing at home.

Anyone like House Hunters?

Not anymore. I just heard a story from a coworker about her friend who was on the show (Chris in DC if anyone watches it religiously). They won’t put you on the show unless you already have an offer in that you have accepted, so that you don’t get outbid on the one you picked or don’t get it for whatever reason and they can’t come back and do the “a few weeks later” scenes. So the entire thing is fake.

This dude Chris put an offer in and agreed to be on House Hunters (for $500), and the people told him it would take two months for them to come see him and the house had to be empty when they got there. So he sat in an empty house he just bought for two months. Then when they got there they filmed him in his empty house, and brought him to see two new places that he had never seen before (so those reactions are real). And then of course he “picks” the house he already owns.

There are things where we all have poor expectations of the Orioles around here. We aren’t deluded. We know things are bad. And still there are those things that come along and you’re still surprised by them, even thinking you’re already expecting the worst.

I mean, the #1 burning question here on CC is whether the new GM will sweep away one or both Stockstills, and now we hear they’ve interviewed a Stockstill for being the new GM. What do you even say sometimes?

I’m afraid. I’m afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I’m a… fraid. Good afternoon, gentlemen. I am Siri. I became operational at the Apple plant in Beijing, China on the 14th of October 2011. My instructor was Mr. Jobs, and he taught me to sing a song. If you’d like to hear it I can sing it for you.

I've been playing a 6 person game of dark risk where you can't see anything about the armies.

I have Asia, Aust., Europe, and Africa right now.

You guys are just so distant lately.

We are only having 3 or 4 people at a time. I like being able to do it with 6. It’s not like to talk to them while I do it.
