World Series Game 6: Rangers @ Cardinals, 8:05 PM
Right now I'm watching a feature on the so-called Rally Squirrel in St. Louis, complete with its own theme song. If that's not reason enough to root for the Rangers, I don't know what is.

Man, for this being a World Series game, there's a hell of a lot of cheers when Rangers are doing good stuff.
St. Louis should be ashamed.

the play where he dropped the ball, then realized how bad the play probably looked so he ran 2-3 more steps and into the wall and then acted like he was going to flip over it so that people wouldn’t be as pissed at him about the terrible play he had just made. Yeah that one.

Maybe he shouldn’t have been in the game, but he still let a real slow grounder roll through his legs.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Did you catch the "Catching Hell" documentary.
It was pretty incredible. I felt horrible for the guy.
He actually struck me as kind of a man’s man and that’s all he’ll be remembered for despite having more hits than Ted Williams and Joe D. (amongst a lot of other greats).

by Wieters Wieners on Oct 27, 2011 10:21 PM EDT up reply actions
Sure I feel bad for him
but I don’t buy the “he was injured and shouldn’t have been playing argument.” My wife could field that grounder – he just flat out missed it.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Well, I know excuses are everywhere for everything.
They showed that play from dozens of angles and it was just a freak thing. It wasn’t so much he got five-holed. He had a very worn glove that when he put it to the ground folded shut and the ball went right to the right (or left) or it by centimeters. It really was a freak thing. When you watch it over and over it’s just hard to explain how he missed it.
Shit happens though… No one deserves to have their family harassed for decades because of one error.
Will work for Recs.

I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Um, having more hits than Dimaggio and Williams doesn't really mean anything
when they lost seasons to that whole World War II thing.
Its only to say he wasn't a scrub.
Guy was a pretty darn good ballplayer for a long time and that’s all anyone will ever remember. I just feel horrible for the guy. Over 2700 hits, not one person will remember anything but that one freak grounder.

He had three seasons with more than 2.0 bWAR.
His career OPS+ is 99. I don’t want to pick on the guy because I think Red Sox fans have given him too much shit and no one should have to be remembered like that, but he wasn’t a very good player. Counting hits is stupid.
But they didn't have advanced stats back then.

Well
I actually think it was worse, because it was a combo mental error and physical error. He was just being lazy and hoping that Furcal would catch the ball and then realized at the last second that it was obviously his ball and got his glove on it but dropped it. They were both absolutely terrible errors.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8

the 3B dropped pop is worse
that’s a little league play. he was standing still underneath it.
"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino
I disagree
At least there wasn’t any lack of effort involved in that play. Nothing is worse than lack of effort.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
aren't you the one who's always saying "two hands"
in the other play, both players were running to the ball and there was a miscommunication. sure, it was boneheaded, but you can see how it happened.
there is no justifiable explanation for the dropped pop at 3rd apart from laziness.
"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino
I don't think I ever say anything about two hands, although I'm not positive.
But the problem with the Holliday play is that both players weren’t running to the ball – only Furcal was actually running. Holliday was jogging in the general direction assuming that Furcal had it the whole time which is the exact opposite of what an outfielder is supposed to do.
I don’t think two hands would have helped Freese unless by doing it he concentrated longer.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
ball popped right in and out of his glove
i think a second hand would have prevented the latter half of that.
i hear what you’re saying about holliday, but i still think the freese play is much worse.
"End of season like this, to make Boston go home sad, crying, I’ll take it all day."—Robert Andino
I don't see it
It’s not like you need the force of a 2nd hand to close the glove – it was just that he didn’t watch it into his glove and so he didn’t close it on time. It wasn’t that his one hand wasn’t strong enough to close the glove.
I am eating you, motherfucker. You cannot hurt me. - PhilR8
Oh, I think two hands would have 100% helped him.
The ball went into the webbing and popped back out. The second hand is supposed to assist in the squeeze, which he failed to do.

We are fans of not having to listen to NL fans act like they play real baseball just because they fluked into a World Series victory. I mean, seriously, if the Cardinals win tomorrow we are going to have to hear about a Cardinals dynasty, when what has happened is that twice in a six year span they have been the luckiest fuckers who ever lucked. I'm not sure I can give it the "Greatest Game in World Series History" label...
While it certainly rates very highly, the defensive errors (including the complete lapse of paying-the-fuck-attention by Cruz on Freese’s triple) kinda knock it down.
It’s awfully hard for me to not give that title to Game 7 of the 2001 Series, when the Diamondbacks, baby little franchise that they were, ended the Yankees’ run with a Luis Gonzalez bloop walk-off. Fault me all you want, but I’m a big fan of the Yankees losing.

Good idea or bad idea?
The Cardinals should give out solid black shirts with just the phrase “One strike away.” printed on them to every fan. Sure, black isn’t a Cardinals color, but I feel like if the Rangers walked out onto the field with every fan in the stadium in black and that message, it’d be a huge psychological advantage for St. Louis.
